A study on Storage Management for Large Spatial Objects in Geographic Database Systems
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 1~10
In this paper, we classify existing spatial indexing schemes for spatial objects in geographic database systems into seven classes. Also, we propose a new spatial indexing scheme called MAX(Multi-Attribute indeXing scheme). The search, insert, delete algorithms for the proposed indexmg scheme are described in detail. It is expected that the performance of the proposed indexing scheme is better than the existing indexing schemes under the some conditions. The proposed indexing scheme, MAX, can be easily implemented on existing built-in B-trees in most storage managers in the sense tha.t the structure of MAX is like that of B-tree.
An Application of GIS Technique to Analyze the Location of Bank Branch Offices : The case of Kangnam-Gu , Seoul
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 11~26
The purpose of this study is to analyze the locational characteristics of bank branch offices in Kangnam-Gu, Seoul by using Geographic Information System. The number of bank branch offices have sharply increased due to financial liberalization, while the scale of them is getting smaller. The procedure of this research has four steps. First, the spatial distribution of bank branch offices in Seoul is analyzed by the places and time. Second, the spatial variations of bank offices in dong districts of Seoul is explained by factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. Third, the location-allocation model which is embedded within network module in Arc/Info is applied in order to find out optimal location of bank offices in Kangnam-Gu. Finally, the grid module is used in creating the potential surface map for locational sites of new bank branch offices The factors to affect the location of the bank offices contain mainly economic variables including local tax, collUl1ercial area, total establismnent and total employment. The actual locational pattern of bank offices is similar to the idealized locational pattern proposed by the function of min-distance in location-allocation models. In conclusion, this study shows that spatial analysis functions may potentially be improved using GIS technologies. However in order to analyze the location of bank offices more precisely, it should be found out the way to collect more appropriate data, construct computerized base maps, and investigate consumer behaviour and behavioural characteristics of bank themselves..
An analysis methodology of spatial locational character and change of urban micro land use , with GIS analysis , in the case of Kangnam , Seoul
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 27~41
Urban land use planning is the most important core-part, and it is the start and synthetical plan of the other part, in the urban planning. For the desirable urban land use planning draw out the spatial locational character and change of urban land use. The propose of tills study is building methodology of Parcel-based Urban Land use Information Svstem(P-bULlS) and it's apphcation methodology that can be used urban planning or land use planning. To this end, each and all of the land parcels of Kangnam area was analyzed. P-bULIS should be able to easily analyze the spatial locational character and change of land use in the region. And It should be able to the qualitative, quantitative and spatial analysis, and spatial multi-variate statistical analysis can be done at relatively low cost by linking the software of statics to P-bULlS.
Strategy on Production and Digitalization of Thematic Maps
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 43~59
There are currently more than tens of thematic maps in Korea. Among them, there are some thematic maps which are used by one organization only by which was made, and there are common thematic maps which are used by several organizations. In this study, among many kinds of common thematic maps which are currently used, the common thematic maps which will be digitized for parts of NGIS project were chosen and the priority of project was established. After selecting five maps from the common thematic maps classified as the first ranking, current land use map, parcel-address map, administrative boundary map, urban planning map and road map, the area of CheJoo Island was digitized as a pilot project. Through the pilot project of CheJoo Island, the level of application was verified, and the method was presented in order to reduce the trial and error in the process of this production after analyzing the matter from the pilot project. The direction for digitizing common thematic maps was presented based on the result of the pilot project, in addition to, the detail plan was established after deciding the number of people needed, the amount of money spent, and the period needed for making digital maps nationwide.
A Study on the Stratege for Intergrating National Geographic Information System and National Very High-speed Communication Network
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 61~75
National Geographic Information System(NGIS) should be designed on the assumption that geographic data collected by each national organization should be integrated into geographic database systemically. To achieve this object, NGIS database would be better connected to National Very High-Speed Communication Network. In the process of research, some problems related to Korean NGIS are found. These are standardization, compatibility, extension, issue of making and opening digital map, and issue related to land information. So, it is required that pilot project apply National Geographic Information System in terms of National Very High-Speed computer network project. This project is to contain two main theme building of physical network and special management of network which is related with NGIS.
Design and Implemetation of an Object-Relational Geographic Information System based on a commercial ORDB
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 77~88
This paper presents the design and implementaion of an object-relational geographic information system. This system has been developed on top of a commercial object-relational database management system. It provides flexible spatial data model, spatial query language, visual user interface, and efficient spatial access methods(D0T) in which traditional primary-key access methods can be applied. We report on our design choices and describe the current status of Implementation. The conceptual model of the system is based on SDTS, and is mapped to the intemal obiect-oriented data model. Kevwords : object-oriented data model, GIS, spatial data model, spatial access method.
The Trends in Remote Sensing and the Applications of High Resolution Space Images
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 89~98
Since 1972, Remote Sensing has been consistently developed and reached today's technology of gaining high resolution images from space, Images from some high resolution satellites have a spatial resolution better than 1m, for example, one by Space Imaging EOSAT which will be in operation by 1998. These Images can be used in various applicable areas such as map makings, surveyings, water resource management, agriculture, by many different users, for example, central and local governments, utility companies of gas, electricity, telecommunication, and so on. Specially, availability of 1m space images will bring revolutionary changes in map making methods that has been mostly adapted for air photos, In this paper, we review trends of this new technology and discuss how to use these images.
A prototype implementation of GIS operations using an intergrated CA-GIS and evaluation of their relative performance
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 99~113
This paper demonstrates the prototype implementation of existing GIS operations using an integrated CA-GIS system where a CA simulator serve an analytical engine for GIS and compares the performance of the operations implemented here with the original ones. In addition, some new GIS operations that are not available in contemporary GIS are implemented and tested within the integrated system. It has shown that most of the local and focal operations were successfully implemented with CA-GIS and some operations written with the CA simulator showed better performance. New types of operations such as various shape filters, time-series filter, and diffusion operators were able to be implemented using the CA-GIS, which appears to be significant to enhance deficient analytical capabilities of contemporary GIS.
Database Development Guideline for the Effective Management of Underground Facilities in Seoul
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 5, issue 1, 1997, Pages 115~131
Effective management of underground facilities which include water line, sewer line, electric line, telephone line, gas line etc., is very important for people's safety as well as administrative efficiency. The purpose of this study is four-fold: first, investigate management status of utility information of each utility companies, second, develope classification system of underground facilities and use this classification system for guidelines of database construction and for the exchange of database among utility companies, third, construct database using existing utility maps in pilot study area and identify accuracy of the existing maps and suggest strategy of database construction, fourth, suggest strategy of database maintenance and its organizational plan in connection with national plan.
