A Study on the Spatial Indexing Scheme in Geographic Information System

The I/O performance for spatial queries is extremely important since the handling of huge amount of multidimensional data is required in spatial databases for geographic information systems. Therefore, we describe representative spatial access methods handling complex spatial objects, z-transform B tree, KDB tree, R tree, MAX tree, to increase I/O performance. In addition, we measure the performance of spatial indexing schemes by testing against various realistic data and query sets. Results from the benchmark test indicates that MAX outperforms other indexing schemes on insertion, range query, spatial join. MAX tree is expected to use as index scheme organizing storage system of GIS in the future.
Development of Loading Information System in Shin-Chon Region

This article considers the experimental foundations of geographical phenomena for the distribution of lodging houses and the development of lodging Information Systems in Shin-Chon Area. This system allows the rural students to find their lodging houses conveniently. We examine the geographical reality of lodging houses in Shin-chon area and explores the lodging information system, reflecting how students select the lodging houses. Criteria for selection of lodging houses are travel time to school, interior facilities, rent fee, members, owners of lodging houses, which are collected by field swvey. The lodging information system is built in integration of Visual Basic with spatial data which are created in Mapinfo and Arcview through MapObject, component GIS software. This system provide query tools to efficiently investigate data as well as interactive map display. Also it displays the characteristics of a selected lodging houses using the identify tool on the map.
A Study on the Recent Trends of GIS and Digital Data in JAPAN

The history of GIS in Japan have been started from the Mesh-data at 1969 and the UIS (Urban Information System) at the early 1970's, and recently we can find the tenn of GIS in many fields and places in Japan. Specially after the Earthquake disaster of Kobe, the importance of the Emergency Management System and the Spatial Data Framework have been growing quickly and the studies and projects of GIS have been increased more and more. I hope that the study about the history and the recent situation of GIS in Japan can show the right way for many GIS projects in our country and so we can be escaped from the amusement of time and money, because the land Regulation System and the Concept of Land Ownership of Japan are very similar to those of Korea. For that purpose, first, I try to trace the history and the present situation of GIS, UIS, FM/AM and Spatial Database Framework in Japan, second, to identify the advantages and disadvantages and problems of Japanese system and finally to suggest more propper way for the GIS projects in Korea.
A Study on the Concept and Methodology of the Zone-Based Landuse Information system Using Digital Maps; A Case of Pohang City

The Zone-Based. landuse Information System(ZBLIS) is an useful information system for city administrators and researchers for planning and analysis. The purpose of this study is to establish concept and methodology of the ZBLIS. The concept of Planning Analysis Zone(PAZ), as a basic unit of analysis, was defined to establish the ZBLIS. Then, various PAZs were suggested through a case study of Pohang city. Also, various useful attribute data were recommended in this study for ZBLIS. Digital Maps were used to establish ZBLIS. Among 730 subcategory items in the Digital Maps, some necessary items were selected for ZBLIS. A 84 items was recommended to be use of the ZBLIS. And 250 more items were recommended for more detailed analysis of the ZBLIS. While previous studies of landuse infonnatiom systems have focused on establishing Parcel-based Landuse Infonnation Systems, it is meaningful that this study is trying to recognize the significance of the ZBLIS and suggest the concept and methodology of the ZBLIS.
Control Procedures of Standardization for GIS Terminology

The motivation of this paper comes from a recognition that GIS educators in the private and public sectors are faced with both an opportunity and a dilemma. As the GIS vendors move to open systems which can be integrated with many traditional operations, the use of spatial data and analysis will become widespread throughout business, government and education. Hence the need for standardization in GIS fields is expanding rapidly. Especially non-standardized terminology of GIS prevents GIS-users from communicating among the GIS application fields. This paper will assist this shifting foundation by providing terminology control procedures for ISO/TC2ll family of standards and KS(Korea Standards) information terminology and make recommendations for the improvement and harmonization of terminology.
A Study on Construction of Digital Cadastral Map for the GIS

The :Ministry of Transportation and Construction has a plan to finish up the construction of digital topographic map which is based. on airphoto intepretation method by the end of 1998 as a part of NQS (National Geogaphic Information System) Project. The digital topographic map, especially 1:1,000 scale, is used as a basemap of many local government's GIS projects. The digital topographic map, however, does not include property information such as cadastral and urbanplan data that are essential for the GIS database of many local governments. This study aims to develop a set of technical guidelines for the construction of digital cadastral map, which can be used together with the 1:1,000 scale digital topographic map, through 1) analysis of the inconsistency between topographic map and cadastral map, 2) comparison of technical methods for the integration of GIS data that have different accuracy, and 3) requirement analysis of the departments related to urban planning of Seoul Metropolitan Govemment. For this research, edited digital cadastral map has been experimentally produced in pilot study area, a part of Hwanghak-dong, Shindang-dong, and Soongin-dong in Seoul.
A Study on the Locational Characteristics of Commercial Facilities

The purpose of this paper is to research the locational characteristics of commercial land use. So this study deals with the realation between land use pattern and the factors which influence commercial land use. To perform this purpose we choose Apgujung-Dong as a case study area which is specially characterized as fashion street. Commercial facilities are spreading into the inner residential areas in Apgujung-Dong. To raise the efficency accuracy of research, informations of lands and buildings are analysed with EXCEL, ARC/INFO, SPSS The results are : (1) The characteristics of lots and buildings in Apgujung-Dong are different in kinds of commercial facilities. (2) The floor where commercial facilities are to locate varies with functions. (3) Commercial land use pattern is influenced by lot size, building size and story, accessibility, adjacent land use, etc. (4) QS is a useful tool in relation with urban land use analysis.
A Study on Revising 1:1,000 Digital Topographic Maps for Seoul Metropolitan Area

This study focused on developing a comprehensive strategy to revise 1:1,000 digital topographic maps for Seoul metropolitan area in terms of both organizational and technical aspects. First of all, we analyze the elements of' the revision strategy in the organization domain and produce four alternatives. Of these alternatives, we suggest a best alternative which appears to be practically sound. Secondly, we review four possible map updating methodologies, paper map digitization, a partial topographic map revision method, a method utilizing scanned aerial photographs, and a method using digital orthophotos. Through a detailed technical analysis and cost analysis of each method, we suggest a reasonable map updating method. Finally, we provide a guideline for distributing 1:1,000 digital topographic maps based on the digital map distribution policy National Geography Institute.
Development of Habitat Suitability Analysis Models for Wild Boar(Sus Scrofa) : A Case Study of Mt. Sulak and Mt. Jumbong

The objective of this research was to develop habitat suitability models for wild boar (Sus Scrafa) in Mt. Sulak National Park and Mt. Jumbong Natural Forest Reserve. The study area is covered-with climax temperate hardwood forests ot'mainly Mongolian oak (
), and has diverse wildlife species including wild boars. Three suitability models - summer, fall, and annual models - were developed. These models were based on slope, aspect, forest types, forest year classes, distance from streams and trails. Habitat data collected through telemetry were used for the models. The accuracy of the models was tested by comparing observed traces of wild boar in Mt. Jurnbong, and most traces were on suitable areas on the suitability maps.
