Development of the mapping method for Urban Ecological Map for Seoul ' using Natural Environment Management GIS
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 51~67
This was preliminary research to develop the mapping method for the Urban Ecological Map. This research provided preliminary evaluation model for ecological conservation. The model was applied to Mt. Kwanak in Seoul, and the Urban Ecological Map was produced and tested. The results are as follows. First, some problems were found in the legal Ecological Map ; insufficient and only qualitative criteria for evaluation of the conservation value in an urban area, and exclusion of the areas designated by other was laws. Secondly, in order to improve the evaluation criteria for Ecological Map, some missed sites should be added to the legal list of valuable sites. Those are needed for ecological restoration, conservation of wildlife habitats managed by a city government , and establishment of eco-corridor. Third, the efficient mapping process for Urban Ecological Map must have two steps. On the first step an ecological evaluation should be done based on pure conservation value. On the second one the Ecological Map for legal action control should be made. And the Analytic Hierachy Process is considered as a Helpful technique for improving the objectivity of evaluation model. Fourth, the legal action control system for Urban Ecological Map should be reviewed.
Development of Precise Vectorizing Tools for Digitization of Cadastral Maps
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 69~83
Cadastral map is the basic data that prescribe a lot number, the classification of land category, a boundary and ownerships of the parcels. Because the analogue cadastral map is not appropriate for the Parcel Based Land Information System, computerization of cadastral map is needed. When considering other automatic vectorizing softwares, we conclude that they can not satisfy the accuracy needed in cadastral map. Also screen digitizing methods demand lots of time. So we developed semi-automatic vectorizing program that realized almost capacities, such as overlay display which is needed for screen digitizing , window link, vector file generation , and so forth. As comparing screen digitizing method using AutoCAD with our developed program, we could obtain not only almost same accuracy , but also 35 minute reduction in vectorizing.
Wild Boar (Sus scrofa corranus Heude ) Habitat Modeling Using GIS and Logistic Regression
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 85~99
Accurate information on habitat distribution of protected fauna is essential for the habitat management of Korea, a country with very high development pressure. The objectives of this study were to develop a habitat suitability model of wild boar based on GIS and logistic regression, and to create habitat distribution map, and to prepare the basis for habitat management of our country s endangered and protected species. The modeling process of this restudyarch had following three steps. First, GIS database of environmental factors related to use and availability of wild boar habitat were built. Wild boar locations were collected by Radio-Telemetry and GPS. Second, environmental factors affecting the habitat use and availability of wild boars were identified through chi-square test. Third, habitat suitability model based on logistic regression were developed, and the validity of the model was tested. Finally , habitat assessment map was created by utilizing a rule-based approach. The results of the study were as folos. First , distinct difference in wild boar habitat use by season and habitat types were found, however, no difference in wild boar habiat use by season and habitat types were found , however, ho difference by sex and activity types were found. Second, it was found, through habitat availability analysis, that elevation , aspect , forest type, and forest age were significant natural environmental factors affecting wild boar hatibate selection, but the effects of slope, ridge/valley, water, and solar radiation could not be identified, Finally, the habitat at cutoff value of 0.5. The model validation showed that inside validation site had the classification accuracy of 73.07% for total habitat and 80.00% for cover habitat , and outside validation site had the classification accuracy of 75.00% for total habitat.

A GIS-Based Method for Route-Alignment in Transportation Infrastructure Projects
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 117~130
This paper presents a GIS-based method of spatial analysis that can be applied to the line determination in traffic infrastructure project . It is based on the spatial analysis of the sensitivity or suitability of areas relating to the integration of new infrastructure routes, carefully considering the requirement of intervention optimizing . It makes the comparison of alternatives and a final selection of a"best route " easier, offers new possibilities and simplifies and accelerates the whole process of line determination. The developed method for route-alignment is tried out by an example project for road planing in Germany. It point out that during the line determination all aspects can be equivalently and adequately evaluated. So this method is well suited as a new tool within a line determination procedure and can bring enormous advantages in the planning process of traffic infrastructure projects. projects.

Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 131~140
The systematic data management system in the area of river flow analysis has not yet constructed, even though the need is evident due to the complicated process of tremendous input/output data in the modeling study and the importance of visualization of spatial flow variation. The objectives of this study are to suggest the method for constructing the NGIS-based river database based on contour, river, elevation, boundary layers and river cross sections and to provide the algorithm for interpolating equi-distance river cross section points. The selected study area is the main Han River starting from Paldang dam site to Indogyo bridge. The constructed database will be useful for the scientific water flow management system in the study area.
Development of Spatial Landslide Information System and Application of Spatial Landslide Information
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 141~153
The purpose of this study is to develop and apply spatial landslide information system using Geographic information system (GIS) in concerned with spatial data. Landslide locations detected from interpretation of aerial photo and field survey, and topographic , soil , forest , and geological maps of the study area, Yongin were collected and constructed into spatial database using GIS. As landslide occurrence factors, slope, aspect and curvature of topography were calculated from the topographic database. Texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil were extracted from the soil database, and type, age, diameter and density of wood were extracted from the forest database. Lithology was extracted from the geological database, and land use was classified from the Landsat TM satellite image. In addition, landslide damageable objects such as building, road, rail and other facility were extracted from the topographic database. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using the landslide occurrence factors by probability, logistic regression and neural network methods. The spatial landslide information system was developed to retrieve the constructed GIS database and landslide susceptibility . The system was developed using Arc View script language(Avenue), and consisted of pull-down and icon menus for easy use. Also, the constructed database can be retrieved through Internet World Wide Web (WWW) using Internet GIS technology.
Extended R-Tree with Grid Filter for Efficient Filtering
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 155~170
When we use R-Tree,a spatial index, to find objects matches some predicate, it often leads to an incorrect result of perform filtering step only with MBR. And , each candidates need to be inspected to conform if it really satisfies with given query, so called, 'refinement step'. In refinement step. we should perform disk I/O and expansive spatial operations which is the cause of increasing retrieval costs. Therefore, to minimize the number of candidate after filtering step, two-phase filtering methods were studied, but there was many problems such as inefficiency of filtering, maintenance of additional informations and reconstruction of data resulted from the loss of original information. So , in this paper, I propose an Extended R-Tree which provides ability to retrieve spatial objects only with some simple logical operations using Grid Table, truth table strong the information about the existence of spatial objects, in second filtering step. Consequently , this Extended R-Tree using Grid Filter has low cost of operation for filtering because of efficient second filtering step, and better filtering efficiency caused by high quality of approximation.
A Cost Effective Reference Data Sampling Algorithm Using Fractal Analysis
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2000, Pages 171~182
Random sampling or systematic sampling method is commonly used to assess the accuracy of classification results. In remote sensing, with these sampling method, much time and tedious works are required to acquire sufficient ground truth data. So , a more effective sampling method that can retain the characteristics of the population is required. In this study, fractal analysis is adopted as an index for reference sampling . The fractal dimensions of the whole study area and the sub-regions are calculated to choose sub-regions that have the most similar dimensionality to that of whole-area. Then the whole -area s classification accuracy is compared to those of sub-regions, respectively, and it is verified that the accuracies of selected sub regions are similar to that of full-area . Using the above procedure, a new kind of reference sampling method is proposed. The result shows that it is possible to reduced sampling area and sample size keeping up the same results as existing methods in accuracy tests. Thus, the proposed method is proved cost-effective for reference data sampling.
