Development a Spatial Analysis System using the Case-based Reasoning Approach
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 171~184
The nature of ill-defined planning problems makes expert systems difficult to acquire and represent knowledge for decision making in urban planning processes. In order to resolve these problems, a case-based reasoning method was applied to develop a spatial analysis system for urban planning. A case study was conducted in a residential land use planning process. The result of the study revealed the effectiveness of reasoning by the spatial analysis system and the possibility of its future application. More accumulation of information on other successful cases should be sought to yield better results
Design and Implementation of an Integrated CA-GIS System
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 185~206
Cellular Automata(CA) have been investigated and utilized as a theoretical framework and/or methodology for analyzing and simulating the properties and behaviors of many complex systems in various physical science and engineering field. Due to the conceptual elegance and effectiveness of implementing spatio-temporal dynamic models and the compatibility with raster GISs, recently a variety of modeling works using both CA and GIS have been published in GIS fields Most of spatial dynamic models introduced in previous research, however, were very limited and furthermore integrated CA-GIS system for practical modeling purpose are not developed yet. This study aims to develop an integrated CA-GIS system in which a CA simulator is used as an analytical engine for GIS providing a multipurpose spatial dynamic modeling functionalities. This integrated CA-GIS system is anticipated radically enhancing the current lacking dynamic modeling functionalities of GIS and being utilized as an powerful and effective tool for practical spatial dynamic modeling research.
The Support System for Groundwater Development Design using GIS
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 207~225
This study develops a GIS-based system which examines the adequacy of the Groundwater development project before the actual designing of the project. A system environment is constructed in order to efficiently and scientifically manage and analyze data related to Groundwater through a Server/Client environment. For this programs such as GIS S/W ArcVies3.2, RDBMS ORACLE, ArcSDE (Spatial Database Engine) are used. WHPA and AQTESOLV are employed as a underground water simulation program and Scripts, a language for ArcView, is used to develop graphic user interface (GUI). Using the system developed here, we can transfer simulation results obtained by WHPA regarding Groundwater levels in new development projects into GIS. We can also judge whether a Groundwater development project should be permitted through examining overlaps of th effects of the development and comparing with o pollutants. At the same time, the system has a feature of supporting Groundwater development and based designing through judging the proper amount of Groundwater in a new project. It is also possible to easily and quickly prepare charts and reports using the outputs of the system. Since a two-tiered system which shares DB using inter-and intranets is developed, all the departments in the ministry of agriculture and forest and the agriculture base corporation can share accurate, reliable and latest information related to Groundwater.
Development a Multi-Criteria Spatial Decision Support System(MC-SDSS) for Analyzing the Suitability of Waste Landfill Sites
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 227~238
As society progresses and becomes more complicated, improvements and demanded in the quality of life according to various interest groups. In relation to environment concerns, waste landfill sites in particular have been of concern. Conflicts involving treatment of such sites and decision making policies have been a point of contention between local governments, residents, and concerned organizations. To resolve these conflicts, this study developed the Multi-Criteria Spatial Decision Support System (MC-SDSS). The results of the case study revealed several conclusions; first, the approach used in this study can help to yield a better consensus for deciding upon waste landfill sites; next, by conducing sensitivity analysis, technical errors which can occur during the decision making process can be minimized; and finally, resistance from specific opposition groups can be effectively dealt with by using MC-SDSS.
A Study on the Statistical GIS for Regional Analysis
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 239~261
A large suite of official statistical data sets has been compiled for geographical units under the national directives, and it is the quantitative regional analysis procedures that could add values to them. This paper reports our attempts at prototyping a statistical GIS which is capable of serving over the Web a variety of regional analysis routines as well as value-added statistics and maps. A pilot database of some major statistical data was ingested for the city of Seoul. The baseline subset of regional analysis methods of practical usage was selected and accommodated into the business logic of the target system, which ranges from descriptive statistics, regional structure/inequality measures, spatial ANOVA, spatial (auto) correlation to regression and residual analysis. The leading-edge information technologies including the application server were adopted in the system design and implementation so that the database, analysis modules and analytic mapping components may cooperate seamlessly behind the Web front-end. The prototyped system supports tables, maps, and files of downloadable format for input and output of the analyses. One of the most salient features of out proposed system is that both the database and analysis modules are extensible via the bi-directional interface for end users; The system provides users with operators and parsers for algebraic formulae such that the stored statistical variables may be transformed and combined into the newly-derived set of variables. This functionality eventually leads to on-the-fly fabrication of user-defined regional analysis algorithms. The stored dataset may also be temporarily augmented by user-uploaded dataset; The extension of this form, in essence, results in a virtual database which awaits for users commands as usual. An initial evaluation of the proposed system confirms that the issues involving the usage and dissemination of information can be addressed with success.

Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 263~275
With increasing of utilization of 1/1,000 Digital-Map being constructed with NGIS project, it is entering upon the stage that problem as the inspection of position accuracy of Digital-Map before its use. This paper evaluated position accuracy of Digital-Map being based on the construction of college facility management system into small area and presented modification/renovation of Digital-Map on area being occurred position error. With a view to evaluation of position error to building using RTK survey, position error was shown more than 0.5mm that is prescribed in survey-law. In order to acquire good position accuracy, first we carried out Static survey to college and selected control point. And, we evaluated coordinate value to important building from control point and compared these results with RTK survey results. Second, we carried out Affine transform based on the control point of building being surveyed with RTK, transformed pre-constructed Digital-Map and compared these results with RTK Survey results. We analyzed first and second method and presented improvement method of position accuracy of Digital-Map suited on small area.

Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 277~290
In 21st century, tourism can's be formed without tourism information systems. Like other cities Kwangju Met. City has managed tourist information system though internet, but it provide tourist only with poor information as text datum and image datum. Therefore tourist can's get the effective and proper tourism information about Kwangju from that system. The purpose of this paper is to develop tourism information system on the basis of geographic information system for providing tourist with effective geographic tourism information. In the first place, spatial database on tourism information about Kwangju was built by 3 stage of areal scope: national scale, provincial scale and city scale. Next, by analyzing existing tourist information system, 4 major system function is developed: viewing tourism map, guiding tourism information, searching tourism information and printing tourism map. By complement of multimedia datum, this system shall be a major tourism resource of Kwangju.
A Study on the Systematic Integration of WASP5 Water Quality Model with a GIS
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 291~307
In today's environmental engineering practice, many technologies such as GIS have been adopted to analyze chemical and biological process in water bodies and pollutants movements on the land surface. However, the linkage between spatially represented land surface pollutants and the in-stream processes has been relatively weak. This lack of continuity needs to develop a method in order to link the spatially-based pollutant source characterization with the water quality modeling. The objective of this thesis was to develop a two-way(forward and backward) link between ArcView GIS software and the USEPA water quality model, WASP5. This thesis includes a literature review, the determination of the point source and non-point source loadings from WASP5 modeling, and the linkage of a GIS with WASP5 model. The GIS and model linkage includes pre-processing of the input data within a GIS to provide necessary information for running a model in the forms of external input files. The model results has been post-processed and stored in the GIS database to be reviewed in a user defined form such as a chart, or a table. The interface developed from this study would provide efficient environment to support the easier decision making form water quality management.
Analysis of 3 Dimension Topography by Real-Time Kinematic GPS Surveying
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 309~324
To apply the real-time kinematic GPS surveying technique, this research has tried to obtain the TOKYO datum first from the continuous reference stations distributed all over the country. Then, analysis of the geography of a coastal area including both of land and sea has been carried out by the post-processed continuous kinematic GPS technique and the real-time kinematic GPS surveying technique. After considering the initial conditions and measuring time zone for real-time kinematic GPS, post-processed and the real-time kinematic GPS measurements have been carried out. A new system has been proposed to store measured data by using a program developed to store GPS data in real time and to monitor the satellite condition through controller simultaneously. The accuracy of GPS data acquired in real time was as good as that acquired by post processing. It is expected that it will be useful for the analysis of coastal geographic characteristics because DTM can be also constructed for the harbor reclamation, the dredging and the variation of soil movement in a river.

Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 341~352
This study was carried out to developed that appraisement model of Potential Productivity Index(PPI). PPI model was used Farmland Productivity Index(FPI) and Labor Productivity Index(LPI) by GIS, and PPI model applied to farm land consolidation region which has been completed recently. FPI was determined by overlapping Poly Grid of the soil properties at the analyzed project region. LPI was estimated by addition productive wages ratio of total direct productive cost. Addition productive wages determined by GIS Network analysis GIS Network analysis of working distance between farm house to paddy and each paddy. PPI variation of each the analyzed paddy of Masu and Weoncheon region was 0.967~0.780 respectively, and could be showed relative largely PPI value. PPI will provide basic element for large scaling and gathering of farm land and a substitute lot of farm land consolidation, and will be maximize productivity of paddy.
Development of Open Land Management Information System(LMIS) Middleware
Journal of Korea Spatial Information Society, volume 9, issue 2, 2001, Pages 353~368
Recently central and local governments developed a huge spatial database and system using full-scale Geographic Information System (GIS). But Inconsistent spatial data through duplicated database management drops off in efficiency and confidence of administration. It is difficult to share data because of their unique system and data type. Under these circumstances Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) has been carrying out Land Management Information System (LMIS) to computerize land administration and policy affairs and to implement land database such as law, spatial, attribute data. A prerequisite mission of LMIS is to develop open system for solving the problem of duplicated data management and data sharing and for supporting various computer environments such as hardware, software, network etc. The purpose of LMIS is to reuse the existing investment resources and to expand the existing system resources. Therefore the purpose of this study is to investigate a method of LMIS operation under the existing circumstances and expansion of the system in the future. To do this, Supporting various DBMS, GIS server, Distributing Computing Platform(Unix, NT Server) is needed. Especially LMIS need to be developed as open system with interoperability to get independence of application from various GIS servers.
