Classification of Community and Distribution of Vascular Plants in the Mt. Seokbul

The vascular plants of the studied area in the Mt. Seokbul appeared to be 342 taxa; 96 families, 249 genera, 293 species, 2 subspecies, 43 varieties and 3 forms and 1 cultivar. Based on the list of the rare plants by the Forest Research Institute, 2 taxa existed in the studied areas; Lloydia triflora(Preservation priority order; No. 169), Aristolochia contorta(No. 151) and based on the list of Korean endemic plants, 7 taxa existed; Cephalotaxus koreana, Carex okamotoi, Populus tomentiglandulosa(Planted species), Indigofera koreana, Weigela subsessilis. Rhododendron yedoense var. poukhanense, Forsythia koreana (Planted species). Specific plant species by floral region were total 18 taxa; Wistaria floribunda(Planted species) in class IV, Lloydia triflora, Acer palmatum in class III, 15 taxa (Cephalotaxus koreana, Quercus variabilis, Ulmus parvifolia, Aristolochia contorta, Pyrus ussuriensis, etc.) in class I. The naturalized plants in this site were 11 families, 26 genera, 32 species, 2 varieties, 34 taxa, and naturalization rate was 9.9% of all 342 taxa vascular plants. The plant communities in the Mt. Seokbul were classified as; Pinus densiflora community(No. 1, 3, 4) and Pinus thunbergii community(No.2).
Effects of Selenium(Se) on Growth and Se Content of Mungbean

This study examined the effective treatment method of selenium and translocation characteristics of selenium in order to produce mungbean containing selenium. The foliar application of selenium at 3.5, 7, 14, and
during the flowering period, yielded a relatively high record of seeds containing
of selenium, from the first and second harvesting. However, seeds from the first harvesting contained
more selenium than the seeds from the second harvesting. On the other hand, seeds from first and second harvesting of the non-treatment group had the same amount of selenium at 0.02mg/kg only. When the foliar application of selenium at
was conducted two or three times, seeds from the first to third harvesting contained just the equal amount of selenium. However, when it was conducted only once, seeds from the first harvesting contained 56% and 67% more than seeds from the second and third harvesting, respectively. In seeds of mungbean containing 2.05mg/kg of selenium, cotyledon had 2.99mg/kg of selenium, which was 38% more than seed coat per unit weight. When mungbean sprout was produced, selenium content was 5.51mg/kg, but seed coats by-product of sprouts had 0.78mg/kg of selenium. The growth and quantity of mungbean was not significantly different according to the concentration and the frequency of foliar application of selenium used for in study.
The Studies of Activity of Retrotransposon(Tos17) according to Tissue Culture Periods in Rice(Oryza sativa L.)

Using the active-increment of Tos17 copies in the genome of Oryza sativa L., there were many studies about induction and selection of new mutants. This study mainly focuses on the induction for retrotransposon(Tos17) activity in the callus of Ilpumbyeo(Oryza sativa L.) according to varied culture period and condition. The objectives of this study are obtaining various mutants(
) through plant regeneration, identification of the mutation relation with Tos17, and subsequent phenotyping of the mutants(
). A total of 371
mutants was obtained. The degree of Tos17 activity obtained regeneration plants with each different culture period was evaluated by Southern blot analysis. The result showed that control Ilpumbyeo rice has 5 numbers of copies and the band numbers obtained 7, 8, 9.5, 12, 6, 13.5, 17.5 from culture period of 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 month, respectively. In this study, the result showed that most effectual culture period for activity of Tos17 in Ilpumbyeo rice is 5 month. Hereafter, collections and analysis of various recombination plants will act on an important factor in multiplication and preservation of
generation. And an urgent and important subject is a development of screening method for selection of diverse mutants.

Effects of Green Manure Crops and Rotational Cropping System on Growth and Yield of Sesame(Sesamum indicum L.)

The green manure crops such as rye, hairy vetch and scotch oat were applied to reduce the injury by continuous cropping system(CCS) of sesame(Sesamum indicum L.) cultivation, which manure crops was sowed in latter-September or mid-October and returned to soil in the next year of May. The growth and yields were increased as 33%(65.0kg/10a) in the rotational cropping system(RCS) compared to continuous cropping system of 48.9kg/10a. In the CCS of sesame, it was increased as
in the green manure crop cultivation, and rye cultivation was the most effective crop to reduce the injury of continuous cropping in the green manure crops. The RCS displayed lower disease outbreak and Fussarium oxysporum density in the soil compared with the CCS, and the green manure crop showed good effect in the CCS of sesame. In the RCS, the porosity was most high in the RCS and CCS of rye cultivation, while rye and hairy vetch was effective way to reduce the injury of continuous cropping. The outbreaks of wilt disease and phytophthora blight were increased as the CCS years, however displayed lowest outbreaks of disease and the yields showed highest in the rye cultivation.
A Floristic Study of the Economic Plants in Mt. Gangcheon(Sunchang-gun Jeollabuk- do)

The flora and the useful economic plants of Mt. Gangcheon was investigated from March to November, 2005. Vascular plants of this area consisted of total 379 taxa; 6 forms, 45 varieties, 328 species, 253 genera, 97 families. It corresponds to 9.31% of totally 4,071 taxa distributed in Korea. The useful plants of this area were 315 taxa. It corresponds to 83.1% of collected plants in this area. Among the useful plants, there were 161 taxa of edible source, 121 taxa of pastural source, 147 taxa of medicinal source, 82 taxa of ornamental source, 11 taxa of timber source, 14 taxa of industrial source. Korean endemic plants were composed of 16 taxa - 14 families, 16 genera, 12 species, 3 varieties, 1 forma. It corresponded to 4.2% of collected materials. The floristic specialized species of
grades were 9 taxa, it correspond to 2.3% of collected materials. The naturalized plants were 15 taxa, it corresponded to 6.7% of 225 taxa distributed in Korea.
Distribution Characteristics of Woody Plants Resources in Jeiu, Korea

In this paper, it was discussed situations and necessities of conservation management strategy for the woody plants resources in Jeju Island. Out of 320 taxa of the woody plants distributed in Jeju, there were 62 families, 136 genus, 279 species, 28 varieties and 13 forma. Conifers, gymnosperms, were 3 families, 5 genus and 7 species as holding 2.2% of total woody plants. Broad leaves, angiosperms, were 59 families, 131 genus, 272 species, 28 varieties and 13 forma that were 313 taxa. Evergreens were 84 taxa consisting of 31 families, 45 genus, 72 species, 7 varieties and 5 forma that make up 26.8% out of total angiosperms. Deciduous were 229 taxa(73.2%) consisting of 42 families, 93 genus, 200 species, 21 varieties and 8 forma that were 122 trees(38.1%), 177 shrubs(55.1%) and 21 vine plants(6.8%). Life form spectra by dormancy, disseminule, radicoid and growth form were analysed. Thirty eight taxa including 17 families, 21 genus, 14 species and 16 varieties out of 320 taxa growing Jeju were endemic to Korea and 22 taxa of them were endemic to Jeju. The specific plant species among the woody plants in Jeju were 10 taxa in V grade, 24 taxa in IV grade and 53 taxa in III grade. These are correspondence to those of nations as 12% of V grade, 7.6% of IV grade and 17.2% of III grade.
Transformation of 'Ilmibyeo' using pCAMBIA 1300 and Microstructural Investigation of Leaves

The argE gene of E.coli was introduced into #Ilmibyeo# cultivar of rice by Agrobacterium tumefaciens and a large number of transgenic plants were produced. Embryogenic calli were co-cultivated with A. tumefaciens strain AGL1 carrying the plasmid pCAMBIA1300 containing hygromycin resistance(HygR). Transgenic plants showing in vitro resistance to 50mg/L hygromycin were obtained using a selection procedure. Stable integration of argE and HPT genes into chromosomal DNA was proven by southern blot analysis and PCR analysis of genomic isolated from
progenies. The fragments of 650 bp(HPT) were detected in transgenic rice lines. The 230 bp(argE) fragments were showed in agarose gel, and detected fragments were matched with size of argE specific primer. The microscopic feature of leaf on scanning electron microscope(SEM) revealed differences between clear and chalky in shape and arrangement of stoma but did not discriminate.
Characteristics of Control-Pollinated Progenies of Pinus thunbergii

Seedlings height of hybrids varied depending on mating combinations. Among the progenies from the mating combination, P. thunbergii(CN4)
P. densiflora(KW29) showed the best plant growth. The mean height of this combination was 521 cm at the age of 8 years(yrs), which was 9% higher than rest of the crosses. Seedlings height of progenies using P. thunbergii(JN37) as mother tree showed 28%, 33%, and 29% higher than those of open-pollinated progenies of the mother tree at the ages of 4yrs, 6yrs, and 8yrs, respectively. On the other hand, using P. densiflora (KB5) as father tree showed 45%, 48%, and 32% higher than those of open-pollinated progenies of the father tree. This result may be caused by hybrid vigor.
Karyotype Analysis and Physical Mapping of rDNAs Using Bicolor-FISH in Tiarella polyphylla D. Don

Tiarella polyphylla D. Don(Saxifragaceae) is a perennial herb and distributed in China, Japan, Taiwan and Korea. Especially, it only grows in Ulleung island of Korea. It has been using for asthma, bruise and audition troubles with main components of some Triterpenoids and seven oleanolic Saponins. There is only known its chromosomal number rarely and cytogenetic study was not done. From this study, karyotype analysis and chromosomal localization of 5S and 45S rDNAs using bicolor-FISH(fluorescence in situ hybridization) were carried out. The somatic metaphase chromosome number was 2n=2x=14 and the size of chromosomes ranged
. The chromosome complement consisted of four pairs of submetacentrics(chromosomes 1, 2, 3 and 6), two pairs of subtelocentrics(chromosomes 5 and 7) and one pair of telocentrics(chromosome 4). We also observed NOR(nucleolus organizer region) on the chromosome 4. In bicolor-FISH, one pair of 55 and 45S rDNA sites was detected on the centromeric region of chromosome 3 and short arm of chromosome 4, respectively. Bicolor FISH was very useful tool for the localization and identification of rDNAs on the chromosomes in Tiarella polyphylla.
The Vascular Plants in Mt. Geotdae, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do

This study was carried out to construct the data base for biodiversity conservation, and offer the raw data for obtaining the genetic resources. The vascular plants were summarized as 306 taxa; 79 families, 199 genera, 266 species, 35 varieties and 5 forma. The Korean endemic plants were 7 taxa; Salix caprea, S. purpurea var. japonica, Deuitzia coreana, Akebia quinata var. plyphylla, Spiraea prunifolia for. simpiciflora, Lonicera subsessilis and Weigela subsessilis. The naturalized plants were 16 taxa; Dactylis glomerata, Rumex acetocella, R. crispus, Phytolacca esculenta, Tlaspi arvense, Robinia pseudo-acacia, Trifolium repens, Ailanthus altissima, Oenothera lamarckiana, Veronica persica, Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, Erigeron annuus, Erigeron canadensis, Bidens frondosa, Taraxacum officinale and Sonchus asper. The specific plants by floristic region were 26 taxa; Chloranthus japonica, Populus davidiana, and so forth.
Changes in Antioxidant Activity, Total Phenolics and Vitamin C Content during Fruit ripening in Rubus occidentalis

In this study, changes in the overall antioxidant properties and chemical constituents including total phenolics and vitamin C of R. occidentalis fruit during ripening are studied. The antioxidant activity was measured by the free-radical scavenging activity(DPPH method) and reducing power(potassium ferricyanide method). Although, the weight and diameter of R. occidentalis fruit were increased with the progress of ripening, antioxidant activity and total phenolics were decrease during ripening. ) in fruit were 61.67% and 0.71, respectively. Total phenolic content and vitamin C content in fruit of 5 days after fruit set were
, respectively. A linear correlation(r=0.9761) was shown between free-radical scavenging activity and total phenolic content.
Effect of Shading Using Different Colored Fabrics on Burcucumber(Sicyos angulatus L.) Seedling Growth and Cotyledon Chlorophyll Content

Nowadays burcucumber(Sicyos angulatus L.) has been widely used as a rootstock of Cucurbitaceae. The study was done to examine the effects of shading with different colored fabrics(white, red and aluminum-coated) on growth and cotyledon chlorophyll content of its seedling. Shading with the white colored fabric lengthened seedling height and hypocotyl length, but shading with the red colored fabric enlarged true leaf area. Total dry weight of each seedling was decreased in the order of no shading, white, red and aluminum, in which resulted from reductions of cotyledon dry weight in white colored fabric, cotyledon and true leaf dry weight in red colored fabric, and dry weight of cotyledon, true leaf and root in aluminum colored fabric. Cotyledon chlorophyll content was reduced by shading treatments although the 3 shading treatments showed nearly same content.
Effects of Size of Rhizome on Top Part Growth in Saururus chinensis Baill

This study was conducted to provide basic data for productivity of Saururus chinensis Baill. depending on rhizome size. The kinds of the treatment were 4 including below 5mm of rhizome size. Major results were summarized as follows. Sprouting was earlier in above 9mm of rhizome size and the number of last sprouting was increased
compared with 8.0
of 6mm of rhizome size. Growth of stem showed a good tendency in 6mm of rhizome size with the longer stem length and the thicker stem but the number of tiller was more rhizome was more thicker. Though the number of commercial leaf was more above 9mm of rhizome size leaf length, leaf width and the number of noncommercial leaf did not showed difference by rhizome size. Dry weight of commercial foliar in 9mm of rhizome size over was increased
compared with 6mm of rhizome size. Therefore, rhizomes size above 9mm showed most effective for increasing sprout and wight of stem and leaves of Saururus chinensis.
Effects of Galgeun(Pueraria radix) Extracts on Plasma and Liver Lipid Composition, Liver Function and Antioxidative Capacity in Rats Fed High Oxidized Fat

Effects of Galgeun(Pueraria radix) extracts on plasma and liver lipid composition, liver function and antioxidative capacity were investigated in rat fed high oxidized fat. Plasma total cholesterol and triglyceride concentration increased in the high oxidized fat groups, however these values showed a tendency to decrease in the Galgeun extracts groups. Plasma HDL-cholesterol concentration revealed a tendency to increase in Galgeun extracts groups. The concentration of liver total cholesterol showed no significantly different in all treatment groups, however liver triglyceride concentration showed a tendency to decrease in galgeun extracts groups. Thiobarbituric acid(TBARS) concentration in plasma and liver showed a tendency to decrease in galgeun extracts groups. The galgeun extracts samples have also decreased the plasma GOT and GPT activities, whereas they have increased the liver glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase activity.
Effect of Storage Duration, Temperature and Priming Treatment on Seed Germination of Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum

Present experiments are conducted to study the seed viability and optimum germination temperature of Polygonatum odoratum var. pluriflorum that is known to have low germination ability and long germination duration. To enhance germination rate, various growth regulators and inorganic salts were employed. Low germination rate was obtained with 4 year old seeds, but not with
year old seeds. The seeds germinated very well under
