DC Traction Regenerative Energy Storage Devices using Super-capacitor

Regenerative energy generated by regenerative braking of DC traction can cause the system malfunction or damage to the rectifier, or malfunction of the power conversion device in power supply system by DC Line voltage rise in feeder line. Regenerative energy storage system using super capacitor is one of the ways to stabilize DC line voltage. In this paper, energy storage system of DC traction system using super-capacitor bank is implemented and using the field measurement data of the station N and the station S on the Line 2, the operation characteristics of line voltage caused by regenerative energy of electric trains are verified. Also, charge/discharge characteristics of super capacitor are verified as well. Thus, we can verify the operation characteristics of super-capacitor bank for regenerative energy storage system installed in DC Traction. And if we can use field measurement data of DC line voltage, we have obtained cost reduction. The stabilization of the system will be improved by measuring the operation characteristics of regenerative energy storage system in certain section operated by DC traction and predicting the capacity and lifetime of super-capacitor.
A Study on the Characteristics of Multi-Phase Interleaved Boost Converter Operating in Boundary Conduction Mode

This paper studies the operational characteristics of Multi-Phase Interleaved Boost converter operating in Boundary Conduction Mode. The generalized transfer functions of interest are derived from the full-order averaged model approach and then the steady-state and dynamic characteristics are analyzed. The theoretical results are verified through an experimental prototype of the 800W boost PFC converter for 60inch PDP power module.
A Soft Switching Scheme using a Single Resonant Inductor in Interleaved Boost Converter

In this paper, an interleaved boost converter (IBC) with ZVT cell using a single resonant inductor in continuous conduction mode (CCM) is proposed. The IBC with the proposed ZVT cell has advantages such as a simple circuit, reduced size and low cost by using a single resonant inductor. It is more suitable for high power applications. The proposed ZVT cell circuit and principles for the IBC are explained in detail. The validity of the IBC with proposed ZVT cell is verified through experimental results.

In this paper, The three HVDC converter arrangements which are the CCC(Capacitor Commutated Converter) and the CSCC(Controlled Series Capacitor Convertor) and Conventional Converter are compared the dynamic character. and it find that the CCC HVDC is operating with more reliability. The simulation was conducted to the PSCAD/EMTDC.
Isolation Control High Speed Transfer Switch for Upgrade Reliability of Uninterruptible Power Supply

This paper investigates the fault generation type and the cause of output interruptionsin bulky with
double conversion UPS, and proposes the fault detection method to improve the reliability of power supply used in the critical load in industry. Identifies its existing way of detecting a quality of inverter output it to bypass when exceeds its expectation. Under a UPS managing system, when an inner (Power device, Controller, CPU) fault occurs it disrupts the power supply and these occurrences has been verified by the results of experiments and application results. To overcome these problems, the proposed method constructs independently a fault-detection, a bypass-control device and a triple power supply apart from the conventional UPS operation. Also the detection point is changed to the preceding of a circuit breaker, a reference of fault detection is modified to avoid any clash and the breaking equipment is attached to intercept a spread of accident. As a result of applications of these developed systems to 242 UPS which was installed purposefully to the communication power supply, the service errors has not occurred in the UPS for two years since 2006.
Development of Wide-Range Brightness Controller of LED Backlight for Avionic Displays

This paper describes an implementation of a wide-range dimming controller of a LED backlight for Avionics applications such as a control display unit(CDU) and multi-function display(MFD). The digital dimming controller employing a current controlled buck converter and light sensor feedback is proposed. The proposed system provides a wide dimming control range of from 150fL to 0.05fL(3000:1) required for avionic displays. The experimental results are provided to show the control performance.
A Study on Flux Barrier of Permanent Magnet Assisted Reluctance Synchronous Motor Design using FEM

This paper examines the design and the performance of a PMA-RSM(permanent-magnet assisted reluctance synchronous motor) for washing machine. A FEM(finite element method) is used to analyze performance and maximum torque characteristic of the proposed PMA-RSM. The designed motor is a combination of salient poles, which is making reluctance torque, and permanent magnet which are located on the air-gap of rotor to get a enough torque during low speed resign. Typical flux barrier type reluctance synchronous motor and the effects of adding magnet into the flux barrier of the rotor of a PMA-RSM are compared and examined. Also the maximum torque point of the reluctance torque by reluctance and reaction torque by magnetic alignment torque, which is in barrier, of the proposed PMS-RSM are derived through simulation. Using this results, the characteristics analysis of a performance, an average torque and a torque ripple of flux barrier RSM and the proposed PMA-RSM are performed through FEM under the saturation effect respectively.
A Study on Implementation of IRIG-B Protocol for Time Synchronization of IEC 61850 based Merging Unit

Recently, IEC 61850 supports the standardized communication technique in both station bus and process bus, and presents substation automation model. In order to implement the IEC 61850 based communication in a substation using the MU (merging unit) which is one of the important data acquisition equipments in substation automation, the time synchronization is demanded for cooperative operation between the devices. This paper proposes the precision time synchronization technique using IRIG-B protocol to develop the MU under IEC 61850 communication protocol. The proposed technique is implemented and its performance is verified experimentally.
Synchronous Bidirectional DC-DC Converter Applying Soft-Switching Technique

This paper proposes synchronous bidirectional DC-DC converter applying soft-switching technique. The proposed converter integrates two advantages which are conduction loss minimization and switching loss elimination by applying interleaved synchronous buck and ZVT-cell with a single resonant inductor. ZVS is guaranteed for wide load range in CCM(Continuous Conduction Mode) as well as wide output voltage range by current injection method. Also, reverse recovery effects of body diode can be minimized. In addition, it is possible to significantly reduce diode drop voltage occurred during dead time of conventional synchronous buck converter. The validity of the proposed converter is verified through experimental results.
Performance Improvement of a Grid-connected PWM Inverter using a Power Theory

The demand of a three phase PWM inverter for the purpose of power control or grid-connecting is increasing. This inverter is connected to a grid through an L-filter or LCL-filter to reduce the harmonics caused by switching. An LCL-filter can reduce the harmonic of a low switching frequency and generate a satisfactory level of grid side current with a relatively low-inductance than an L-filter. But the additional poles caused by the LC part affects a stability problem due to induced resonance of the system. This paper presents a compensation method using a power theory to improve performance, the designed LCL-filter system and to reduce the stability problems caused by resonance. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified by simulations and experiments.
