Implementation of Super High-speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine Drive

Recently, super high-speed motor drives have been available due to the development of power electronics technology And they are used in various fields of industry because of their advantages. This paper describes the control algorithm for a permanent magnet synchronous motor(PMSM) drive at the speed of 118,000r/min using DSP and IGBT inverter. Hall sensors are implemented to measure the rotor position and speed, and a speed observer is used to reduce the performance deterioration caused by the low resolution of hall sensors. To enhance the output power capacity in the high-speed operating region, a flux weakening controller which also can work as an anti-wind up controller is used. Computer simulations and experiments are peformed to validate the proposed method.
PMSM Sensorless Control using Parallel Reduced-Order Extended Kalman Filter

This paper proposes a novel sensorless control scheme for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) by using a parallel reduced-order Extended Kalman Filter. The proposed scheme can obtain rotor position and speed by back-EKF that is estimated by reduced-order ETD and save computation time great)y due to using a parallel structure that works by turns every sampling time. Therefore, proposed scheme has merits of conventional EKF, and problems of parameter sensitivity are partially overcome. And proposed scheme can safely estimate rotor speed and position by using new algorithms according to driving regions. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed estimation technique, and to verify the merit of the proposed scheme, a comparison of a new reduced-order EKF algorithm with a conventional EKF algorithm has been also made in terms of computation time.
Feasibility Study for the Stable Operation of Cheju Network

The benefits of utilizing energy exchange between the main land and Cheju island in Korea make it interesting to establish new HVDC sea cable interconnections. A total power of 350 MW or more can then be exchanged through the HVDC links including the existing Cheju HVDC #1 interconnection. A feasibility study base on economical benefits has been carried out. Especially the comparison of economy benefit between thermal power plant, LNG power plant and HVDC system shows that HVDC system is the only solution in Cheju island. Also, this paper shows that additiona 1 HVDC system help to enhance the stability of power system.
Current Compensation Method of a Three Phase PWM Converter under Distorted Source Voltages

This paper proposes a current compensation method of a three phase PWM converter. The phase angle of utility voltage is essential to control a PWM converter. In the case of using synchronous reference frame PLL to detect the phase angle of the distorted source, harmonics of source voltage cause the phase angle to be distorted. PWM converter control by the distorted phase angle results in input current harmonics. This paper proposes a current compensation method which can limit THD of Input currents below to 5% that is the harmonic current requirements by IEEE std. 519. Its validity is verified by simulation and experiment.
Modeling and State Observer Design of HEV Li-ion Battery

A lumped parameter model of Li-ion battery in hybrid electric vehicle(HEV) is constructed and system parameters are identified by using recursive least square estimation for different C-rates, SOCs and temperatures. The system characteristics of pole and zero in the frequency domain are analyzed with the parameters obtained from different conditions. The parameterized model of a Li-ion battery indicates highly dependent of temperatures. To estimate SOC and polarization voltage, a Luenberger state observer is utilized. The P- or PI-gains of observer based on a suitable natural frequency and damping ratio is adopted for the state estimation. Satisfactory estimation accuracy of output voltage and SOC is especially obtained by a PI-gain. The feasibility of the proposed estimation method is verified through experiment under the conditions of different C-rates, SOCs and temperatures.
Control of Single-Phase Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System using a Z-Source Inverter

In this paper, a method for controlling the a single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic(PV) system using Z-source inverter (ZSI) is proposed. The operating region of grid-connected ZSI system with a variation of PV output voltage are analyzed by considering the voltage stress across switching devices. The switching patterns for controlling effectively the shoot-through time while reducing the switching loss are suggested. Both the simulation studies and experimental results with 32-bit DSP are carried out to verify the performances of proposed system.
Design and Fabrication of Scanning Backlight Unit using Flat Fluorescent Lamp

In this paper, scanning backlight unit which can reduce motion blur was designed and fabricated using flat fluorescent lamp. The FFL(flat fluorescent lamp) is in the limelight as a new illuminant of next generation BLU(backlight unit), because of simple assembly and reduction of driving components. In order to control lamp brightness, lamp on-time was controlled. In this experiment, it was confirmed that lamp brightness can be dimmed linealy and in a wide range.
ISC-STS Proposal for Reliability Improvement of Communication System's

The SCR in Static Transfer Switch (STS) is used for reliability improvement of important load's power supply in industry field. However an average of 2% fault in thyristor(SCR) occurs, so that the attached mechanical switch is paralleled with SCR's both end points and SCR operates only during the
[mS] before operation of the mechanical switch. Also, an ISC (Ideal State Conditioning Interlock Device) - STS system that two power supply paths may not be thrown at the same time is developed to remove the overlap section perfectly when a short or earth fault is generated in one system. This method has reduced the fault rate remarkably through the reduction of SCR's fatigue degree by using SCR in conversion operation corresponding to 0.89 times a year. Also, in case of fault generations, it does not affect to supply power to the load, therefore it contributes to the promotion of reliability in the power supply.
Development of UPFC GTO Thyristor Valve Test Equipment

KEPCO 80MVA UPFC has been operated in Gangjin Substation since May 2003. This UPFC is composed of 40MVA shunt inverter and 40MVA series inverter, and developed in technical cooperation between Hyosung and Siemens. KEPCO has tried to localize UPFC control technique after its installation and developed GTO Thyristor Valve Test Equipment for annual maintenance test. The development of this equipment make it possible to process GTO Thyristor module test automatically and manage historic data systematically, which could improve UPFC reliability.
A Study on the ZVS Full Bridge Converters using the New Integrated Magnetics Transformer

This paper presents the structure and performance of a new Integrated magnetics-based transformer, which can be readily adapted to zero-voltage switching full bridge dc-to-dc converters. The proposed transformer features with two paralleled primary windings and a center-tapped secondary winding. The transformer can be fabricated on standard EE or EI cores where the primary and secondary windings are placed on the outer legs while the output filter inductor is wound on the middle leg. The performance of the proposed transformer is demonstrated with a 100 kHz 720 W experimental dc-to-dc converter which recorded a 92% conversion efficiency at 12 V output voltage.
