The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 431~439
In this paper, design procedures and voltage gain characteristics on LLC resonant converter with two transformers are described. Two transformers applied to LLC resonant converter are connected in series at the primary and connected in parallel at the secondary to reduce the unbalance of the primary current. Based on the theoretical analysis and simulation results, considering the characteristics of voltage gain and load variation, prototype of the 400W LLC resonant converter for 50inch PDP TV power module is built and the design procedures through the experimental results are verified.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 440~448
Facility power-line electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters are used to provide radio frequency(RF) isolation between dedicated power distribution services and noise sensitive local power distribution systems. This type of EMI filters generally needs a high current capacity and, in some special applications, a high insertion loss of a minimum 100dB from 14kHz through 10GHz per MIL-STD 220 is required. This paper deals with an analysis and design of a wideband facility power-line EMI filter with the above requirements. The characteristics of the inductor and capacitor at high frequencies are investigated. The characteristics and design method of the facility EMI filter with a high order LC network are also presented. The prototype filter is finally implemented and its performance is verified from the experimental results.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 449~456
The RMS(Root Mean Square) current stress reduction technique for the PFC link capacitor is proposed. Although the various parameter is exist for optimizing the link capacitor, the RMS current stress is the most weighty practical parameter. The proposed C-L filter can reduce effectively the RMS current stress by filtering the output current. And with the C-L-L-C filter proposed in this paper, the more RMS current stress can be reduce because it filters not only the output current, like C-L filter, but also the input current of DC/DC stage. The proposed filter is simple to design and have no effect on the control part of the PFC because of the very low crossover frequency. To confirm the validity of proposed filter, theoretical analysis, the design guide, verification of experimental results are presented.

Lithium batteries are widely used in mobile electronic devices due to their higher voltage and energy density, lighter weight and longer life cycle compared to other secondary batteries. In particular, high demand for lithium batteries is expected for electric cars. In case of lithium batteries used in electric cars, driving distance must be calculated accurately and discharging should not be done below the level of making it impossible to crank. Therefore, accurate information about state of charge (SOC) becomes an essential element for reliable driving. In this paper, a new method of estimating the SOC of lithium polymer batteries by using AC impedance is proposed. In the proposed method, parameters are extracted by fitting a curve of impedance measured at each frequency on the equivalent impedance model and extracted parameters are used to estimate SOC. Experiments were conducted on lithium polymer batteries with similar capacities made by different manufacturers to prove the validity of the proposed method.

The vector control algorithm has come to be used as induction motor for high performance torque and response improvement. This paper deals with new control algorithm which improves the performance of the rotor flux control by combining the conventional current controller with the flux controller and the hysteresis controller. In voltage shortage condition, proposed algorithm shows that the response and the stability can be improved both in the simulation results and in the experimental results.

Kwon, Kyoung-Min ; Choi, Jae-Ho ; Chung, Gyo-Bum ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 472~480
This paper describes the overmodulative SVPWM technique and harmonics analyses of three phase NPC type three-level inverter to the modulation index. Three phase NPC type three-level inverter adopted SVPWM to extend the linear region to 0.907, moreover, the following voltage compensation using Fourier series was adopted in the region of overmodulation to make it work to six-step level. PD type of multi carrier method is used with the double Fourier series for the analysis of output power harmonics characteristic. Simulation was performed by PSIM, and the harmonics characteristics of 3-level inverter in each region are analyzed. The side band harmonics of carrier frequency are dominant in the linear region, but these harmonic components are decreased as the inveter goes to overmodulation region, and the harmonics due to the fundamental frequency is increased gradually at the same time. The harmonic analyses are verified through the simulation and experimental results under the same condition.

Son, Kyoung-Min ; Choi, Jae-Ho ; Kim, Hyung-Chul ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 481~487
This paper proposes a regulation method of DC line voltage for urban transit system fluctuated during the acceleration or deceleration by using supercapacitor. Supercapacitor is modelled electrically under the assumption of three different time constants of RC circuits with variable capacitances depending on the voltage. And its parameters are determined by the experimental measurements. The energy storage system using supercapacitors is installed based on this model, and the proposed model is tested through the simulations and experiments, and the controller for charging and discharging is designed. Finally, it is tested at Kyoungsan test site for the urban light rail road system and the energy saving effect is evaluated economically.

Kim, Hyeok-Jin ; Chung, Gyo-Bum ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 488~495
This paper proposes a new AC/DC RPPB(Resonant Piezo-Powered Boost) converter for energy harvesting using a piezoelectric device which converts mechanical vibration energy to electrical energy. The AC/DC RPPB converter can operate with only the harvested energy without an additional power conversion circuit for switching circuit and transfer energy to a load of which the voltage is higher than piezoelectric voltage. With the review of published topologies of the converter for energy harvesting, the operation principle of the AC/DC RPPB converter, and the results of PSPICE simulation and experiment are presented to prove the feasibility of the new converter for the energy harvesting.
Three-Phase Interleaved Isolated High Efficiency Boost Converter
Choi, Jung-Wan ; Cha, Han-Ju ;
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 14, issue 6, 2009, Pages 496~503
In this paper, a new three-phase interleaved isolated high efficiency boost dc-dc converter with active clamp is proposed. The converter is capable of increased power transfer due to its three-phase power configuration, and it reduces the rms current per phase, thus reducing conduction losses. Further, interleaved operation of three-phase boost converter reduces overall ripple current, which is imposed into fuel cells and realizes smaller sized filter components, increasing effective operating frequency and leading to higher power density. Each output current of three-phase boost converter is combined by the three-phase transformer and flows in the continuous conduction mode by the proposed three-phase PWM strategy. An efficiency of above 96% is mainly achieved by reducing conduction losses and switching losses are reduced by the action of active clamp branches, as well. The proposed converter and three-phase PWM strategy are analyzed, simulated and implemented in hardware. Experimental results are obtained on a 500 W prototype unit, with all of the design verified and analyzed.

This paper deals with a new overvoltage snubber for a diode-clamped 3-level IGBT inverter. Usually most power converters use snubber circuits to protect the switching devices from voltage spike. However, it is difficult for the diode-clamped multi-level converter to be protected from voltage spike with overvoltage snubber since the series connection of the switching devices. To solve the problem the characteristic of a overvoltage snubber for a DC-DC converter is analyzed, and a new snubber for a diode clamped 3-level inverter is proposed. The performance of the proposed snubber is verified through experiments.
