A Single-Phase Quasi Z-Source AC-AC Converter with a Series Connection of the Output Terminals

In this study, a single-phase quasi Z-source AC-AC converters with a series connection of the output terminals is proposed. The proposed system has configuration that the input terminals of two quasi Z-source AC-AC converters are connected in parallel and its output terminals are connected in series. The out of phase mode and in phase mode of the proposed system are presented. To verify the validity of the proposed converter, a DSP controlled hardware was made and PSIM simulation was executed. As a result, controlling the duty ratio of the converter, the desired buck-boost output voltages could be generated. For each modes, as compared with the single converter operation, the proposed converter could enhance the efficiency and input power factor according to different loads. Also, in case of the out of phase mode under the constant load, the efficiency and input power factor of the proposed system are increased 10[%], 35[%] respectively in compared with the single converter. And, the output voltage is constantly controlled in dynamic state in case while the load is suddenly changed.

As the import and export cargos across the world increase with global trade environments, the ecocide caused lots of small marine organisms in the ship's ballast water is a big issue. The implementation of the BWTS (Ballast water treatment system) thus needs low-voltage high-current rectifier for electrolytic disinfection. So this paper proposes a suitable high-current inverter-type rectifier for electrolytic disinfection of seawater and analyzes its output characteristics. It also suggests the practical design guidelines for the proposed rectifier in terms of power circuit and controller designs.
Supercapacitor Energy Storage System for the Compensation of Fuel Cell Response Characteristics

This paper deals with supercapacitor energy storage system for the compensation of the slow response characteristics of a fuel cell generation system for grid connection. A bidirectional dc/dc converter is used for the charging and discharging of the supercapacitor. The conventional converters use additional clamping circuit, etc. to reduce a voltage spike at the instant of switching and to provide wide range of soft switching. The proposed method provides simplified hardware implementation without any clamping circuit, and soft switching condition for both charging and discharging mode with proper switching patterns. The usefulness of the proposed scheme is verified through simulation and experimental results with 1 kW system.
Design of LED Drive using MLCC Output Capacitor

In this paper, we proposed a LED driver that allows to use a long lifetime MLCC with small voltage capacity to replace the electrolytic condenser that has been used at the output part by storing only the voltage fluctuation due to temperature variation in the output condenser. The proposed LED driver can allow to use a long lifetime MLCC with small power loss as the output condenser instead of the conventional electrolytic condenser with short lifetime because it stores only the voltage fluctuation due to the temperature variation of the LED light source in the output condenser by connecting the output condenser with the input power supply in series in the basic topology of the conventional boost DC/DC converter. In this study, we performed a simulation to verify the conventional DC/DC converter and the proposed DC/DC converter. It was shown that the DC/DC converter proposed through the experiment allows to use MLCC as the output condenser and the efficiency can be improved.
Fault Diagnosis for 3-Phase Diode Rectifier using Harmonic Ripples of DC Link Voltage

The fault analysis and detecting algorithm for a 3 phase diode rectifier is proposed. The 3 phase dioderectifier is used for the AC power rectifier of the PWM inverter. The input power or diode faults cause theripples of the DC voltage, degradation of the control performance and life shortening of the DC link capacitor.In this paper, the ripple of the DC voltage is mathematically analyzed for the earth fault of input power andopen circuit fault of the diode, respectively. The fault detection and type of fault can be obtained by comparingthe average DC voltage and the instant DC voltage which is sampled with 6 times of grid frequency. Theproposed method can be easily applicable and doesn't require additional circuit. The experimental and simulationresults are presented to verify the validity of the proposed method.
Sinusoidal Current Control of Single-Phase PWM Converters under Voltage Source Distortion Using Composite Observer

In this paper, a high-performance current control for the single-phase PWM converter under distorted source voltages is proposed using a composite observer. By applying the composite observer, the fundamental and high-order harmonic components of the source voltage and current are extracted without a delay. The extracted fundamental component is used for a phase-lock loop (PLL) system to detect the phase angle of the source voltage. A multi-PR (proportional-resonant) controller is employed to regulate the single-phase line current. The high-order harmonic components of the line current are easily eliminated, resulting in the sinusoidal line current. The simulation and experimental results have verified the validity of the proposed method.
Novel ZVS Switching Method of Full-bridge Converter

Existing switching system that is one of the ways which are used for DC/DC power converter is classified to hard-switching system and resonant-soft-switching system, generally. Hard-switching system is inefficient because the power loss of the switching element is large when it is been to trun on or turn off. And resonant-soft-switching system have the defect that need to add the another reactor and capacitor that make it expensive and huge. This paper suggest the ZVS Full-Bridge power converter contrcution of novel switching system for the overcoming these shortcomings. In Suggested soft-switching system, the front of buck converter at diode current, switch is changing on and off at the part of full-bridge converter's zero voltage part. as the result that is possible to be ZVS excepting the reactor and capacitor. also to verify the reasonability of the isolated ZVS full-bridge DC/DC converter as previously suggested, we produced the 500[W] level DC/DC converter and enforced the simulation for Psim, and then it able to conform the superiority of the DC/DC converter's efficient.
Sensorless MPPT Control of a Grid-Connected Wind Power System Using a Neuro-Fuzzy Controller

The MPPT algorithm using neuro-fuzzy controller is proposed to improve the performance of fuzzy controller in this paper. The width of membership function and fuzzy rule have an effect on the performance of fuzzy controller. The neuro-fuzzy controller has the response characteristic which is superior to the existing fuzzy controller, because of using the optimal width of the fuzzy membership function through the neural learning. The superior control characteristic of a proposed algorithm is confirmed through simulation and experiment results.

Bimodal tram is designed to run on a dedicated path in automatic mode using a magnetic track system in order to realize a combination of the accessibility of a bus and the constant regularity of a railroad. This paper presents design and test results of the series hybrid propulsion system of the bimodal tram on both test track and public road, which uses CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) engine and Lithium polymer battery pack. This paper describes the real-time data measuring equipment for the series hybrid propulsion system of the bimodal tram. Using this measurement equipment, the performance of the prototype vehicle's driving on test track and public road was verified and the fuel consumption and the efficiency of CNG engine have been investigated.
A Study on Simulation-based Optimization for Wind Turbine Controller Tuning

This paper presents a method of optimizing the blade pitch and generator torque controllers which have been already designed for an existing wind turbine generator system. Since the highly nonlinear and uncertain characteristics of the wind turbine generator can not be fully considered in the controller design phase, some parameters such as control gains must be tuned during the field implementation phase. In this paper, nonlinear simulation software, which is based high fidelity wind turbine model, and optimization technique are effectively combined and used to tune a set of gains for the blade pitch and the generator torque controllers. Simulation results show that the baseline controllers can be effectively optimized to reduce the errors in wind turbine rotor speed and generator power output controls as well as twisting of the high and low speed shafts.
Influence of the Parasitic Inductor Resistance on Controller Design of Boost Converter for Renewable Energy System including an Energy Storage

Nowadays, industry of smart grid is important for practical use of the renewable energy. In this situation, it is important to use the energy storage to make more stable and efficient renewable energy sources. The power conditioning systems consist in a boost converter which makes renewable energy source connected with the grid-connected inverter and the charger/discharger which takes the energy transfer between the boost converter and an energy storage. The effects on the controller design of each converter must be investigated to avoid the instability of the entire system. small-signal modelling of the boost converter and charger/discharger have been done and a controller design example is also presented. In this paper, effects on the controller design of the boost converter and the charger/discharger are investigated according to the existence of the parasitic resistance of the boost converter. In conclusion, the parasitic resistance of the inductor should be considered from the aspect of both the frequency domain analysis and time domain simulation using both MATLAB and PSIM.
Development of VPO MPPT of PV System Considering Shadow Influence

This paper presents the variable perturbation and observation(VPO) maximum power point tracking(MPPT) control of the photovoltaic(PV) system considering the shadow influence. The output characteristics of the solar cell is a nonlinear and affected by a temperature, the solar radiation and influence of a shadow. MPPT control is a very important technique in order to increase an output and efficiency of the solar power generation. Conventional perturbation and observation(PO) and incremental conductance(IC) are the method finding MPP by the continued self-excitation vibration. The MPPT control is unable to be performed by rapid output change affected by the shadow. To solve this problem, this paper proposes the VPO MPPT algorithm which changes step size according to output variation. The response characteristics of VPO MPPT algorithm proposed in this paper compares with response characteristics of conventional MPPT algorithm about the radiation, temperature and shadow influence. The validity of the algorithm proposed in this paper prove through the results of the comparisons.
