High Precise Measurement of Grid-Connected Inverter using DFT

A precise measurement of the grid voltage is one of the essential techniques, which is required to connect a renewable energy to the grid. In general, when a filter is used to eliminate unnecessary harmonics and noises, a signal is distorted by phase delay, amplitude attenuation, and other distortions. And the response characteristic of a controller is directly affected by bandwidth of cut-off frequency of the filter. To alleviate this problems, we propose an effective algorithm based on DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) instead of approaching the filter application. The proposed algorithm ensures high precise measurement of the grid voltage because it can extract the fundamental and harmonics from the raw signal without any distortions. The high performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by PSIM simulation and experiments of Grid-Connected VSI.
AC Regeneratable Battery Charging and Discharging Test System

In this paper, 15[kW] AC regenerative system for battery charging and discharging test is proposed. The regenerative system is able to regenerate surplus energy to the grid in discharging mode, and the inverter of the system can be operated as a converter to compensate scarce energy in charging mode. In case of the conventional DC charging and discharging system, the regenerative energy is consumed by a resistor. However, as the proposed system regenerates the surplus energy to the grid through using DC-AC inverter, the energy saving effect can be achieved. In this paper, 15[kW] battery charging and discharging system is developed, and the validity of the system is verified through simulation and experimental results.

This paper proposes a PDS(Power Transfer Display separation) method for AC-PDP. The proposed PDS method can transfer power and perform an energy recovery by a power conversion circuit operates differently depending on the time. As a result, it uses less of components than conventional PDP power supply and sustain circuit use. Moreover, the manufacturing process can be streamlined. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for low cost PDP module. To confirm the operation, validity and features of the proposed PDS method, experimental results from a prototype for 42-in diagonal PDP are presented.
A Study on the Improving Effectiveness of Shipboard Electric Propulsion System with Ultra-capacitor Energy Storage Devices

Recently, integrated electric propulsion system has been vigorously adopted into naval vessels. To enhance effectiveness and efficiency of power management in these propulsion systems, this paper investigates necessity of energy storage devices and their operation strategies. By introducing the energy storage devices, engine can operate at higher efficiency point and accordingly costs for fuel and maintenance are significantly reduced. In addition, transient performance can also be improved with support of the devices and it leads to stable operation of shipboard power bus. To validate the proposal of this paper, computer simulation has been conducted with real load data of existing electric propulsion system.
LLC Resonant Converter using Proposed Planar Transformer

In this paper, a new planar transformer with a novel core configuration that can regulate the leakage inductance is proposed and described in detail. In order to design the slim size power system for flat panel TV, Two planar transformers applied to LLC resonant converter are connected in series at primary and in parallel by the center-tap winding at secondary. In this paper, a 300W low profile LLC resonant converter was built and tested to verify the proposed planar transformer.
A single-carrier comparison PWM for Voltage Control of Vienna Rectifier

In this paper, a new simple PWM method for Vienna rectifier is proposed. The previous SVPWM method for Vienna rectifier is very complex and difficult to implement. To solve these problems, a new single-carrier comparison PWM method for voltage control of Vienna rectifier is proposed. Because of using the only single carrier, implementation of the proposed PWM is very simple. In the proposed PWM method, carrier comparison parts of the PWM block is only changed from the 2 level PWM control block. The usefulness of the proposed PWM method is verified by the simulation and experiment.
Design of the Modified PID Speed Controller to Reduce the Speed Ripple

PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) has periodic torque ripple from the cogging torque and load conditions. This paper proposes the modified PID speed controller to reduce the speed ripple of the PMSM. The proposed modified PID controller uses a selective D(Differential) control term according to the speed error and the differential of the speed error. The proposed speed controller produces an additional torque reference such as torque compensator based on PI controller according to the speed error and the differential of the speed error, and it can reduce the vibration of the conventional D-control term with reduced speed ripple. Since the additional torque reference of the proposed speed controller is changed by the sign of the speed error and the differential of the speed error, a simple function to determine the sign of the error is used to produce the compensated torque. The proposed control scheme is verified by the computer simulation and the experiments.
Independently-Controlled Dual-Channel LED Driver using LLC Resonant Converter

The independently regulated dual-output LLC resonant converter using only one power stage and one control IC is proposed in this paper. The conventional dual-output LLC resonant converter requires the extra non-isolated DC/DC converter to obtain the tightly regulated slave output voltage, which results in the low power conversion efficiency and high production costs. On the other hand, since the proposed converter controls the master and slave output voltages by pulse width modulation(PWM) and pulse frequency modulation(PFM), it can achieve tightly regulated dual output voltages without the additional non-isolated DC/DC converter. Therefore, it features a high efficiency and low cost. To confirm the validity of the proposed converter, theoretical analysis and experimental results from a 40W LED driver prototype are presented.
Digital Load Sharing Method for Converter parallel Operation

This paper presents CAN-based parallel-operation and load-sharing techniques for the communication server power supply. With the load information obtained through CAN communication, each modules performs its current control independently and the power unbalance caused by impedance differences of converter modules can be reduced. In conventional method, slave modules are controlled by master module. On the other hand, the proposed load share algorithm uses the Multi-Master method. Therefore, accurate load sharing can be accomplished by the reference structure of each module's average current. Each converter has two stages and it is separated into PFC, which is responsible for harmonic regulation, and LLC resonant converter, which controls output voltage. To verified the performance of the proposed method, two 2KW prototypes has been implemented and experimented.
Reduction of the Unbalanced Three Phase Input Current by Variable Notch Filter in Active AC Electronic Load

In this paper, the test bed using three-phase PWM converter connected with single phase inverter in series is set up to configure an active AC electric load. Since the two topologies, three-phase PWM converter and single-phase inverter, can be operated bidirectionally, the system not only re-generates surplus power to grid but also prevents power dissipation. However, the construction of system has a drawback. That is, ripple components two times of inverter operation frequency occur at DC-Link due to cascade connection, it can be cause of three phase unbalance Since the operational characteristic of the active AC electric load, the power frequency entered into the electric load can be varied, and the ripple of DC-Link is changed as well. In this paper, the three-phase PWM converter using a variable notch filter is proposed, and the reduction of three-phase current unbalance is presented. the validity of the proposed PWM converter using a variable notch filter is verified by the simulation and experimental results.
Position Controller for Clutch Drive System of PHEV(Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle)

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is driven by the engine, the primary traction motor, and the secondary auxiliary motor generating the electric power for battery charging. Secondary auxiliary motor should be connected to the engine or separated from the engine by the clutch system. This paper presents the position controller of the BLDC motor for the clutch system of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. The BLDC motor can be applied to the clutch system in spite of it's low accuracy of the position control due to high gear ratio between the clutch and the motor. Since the attachment and the detachment between the motor and the engine should be carried out within 0.3 seconds, the position controller with fast acceleration and deceleration is implemented. For the torque control with braking operation for the BLDC motor, the modified bipolar PWM method with low current ripple compared to the conventional unipolar PWM is presented. The position control performance of the BLDC motor for the clutch system is verified through the simulation and experiments.
A Development of 2MVA Battery Energy Storage System

Energy storage system connected to the grid has two functions such as the surplus power of a grid is stored in batteries or the energy stored in batteries will supply to the grid when the grid needs. The battery energy storage system consist of power condition system (PCS) for power supply and battery conditioning system (BCS). Lithium-ion batteries are mainly used. In this paper, the battery energy storage system connected to the grid described. The configuration of the 2MVA class power control system using water cooling and battery system are presented. And control method for the system and the output filter design method are proposed. Experimental verification of the proposed system is provided with 2MVA PCS and 500kWh BCS.
Input/Output Ripple Analysis of Interleaved Soft Switching Boost Converter

In this paper, the input current and output voltage ripple of the soft switching interleaved boost converter was analyzed. Ripples of input current and output voltage with an interleaved method is analysed and as a result, the facts that it has lower ripple current than conventional interleaved method is verified. it means that a capacity of a main inductor can be reduced. Besides, a low capacitance of capacitor which means high lifetime and confidence can be used because of reducing ripples of output voltage. In order to verify the validity of the proposed converter used 10uF film capacitor, experiment was performed, and the efficiency of the proposed converter was measured with variable load and duty conditions.
