Studies on the Application of Unit-inverter Parallel Operation to Sea-water Lift Pump in Power Plant
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 1~7
Due to the increase in capacity of auxiliary machinery in power plant, the importance of energy saving has been greatly emphasized. If the speed of fans or pumps is controlled in accordance with the variation of load, large electric energy can be saved. Large capacity inverter, 2MVA GTO inverter, has been developed by operating two of 1MVA unit inverters in parallel. The parallel operation of the unit inverter is accomplished through two output transformers of which the secondary windings are connected in series. The system is composed of one control cubicle, one rectifier cubicle and 2 unit inverter cubicles. This inverter system was applied to the sea water lift pump(SLP) driven by a 6.6KV 1500KW induction motor in Seo-Inchon power plant to save the electric energy. The parallel operation of inverters by 180 degrees apart in switching frequency helps to reduce the harmonic components.
A Novel Optimized PWM Method Based on the Selection of Pulse Position
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 8~14
This paper describes a novel real-time based optimal Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) method suitable for microprocessor-based PWM inverters. Optimal switching patterns minimizing the performance index corresponding to the distortion between the reference and the controlled output voltages are decided by on-line calculation using the microprocessor-implemented control system. To show the effectiveness of the proposed PWM scheme, digital simulation studies and experiments using a 16-bit single-chip microcontroller (Intel 80C196KC) are performed. The results obtained from these simulation studies and experiments show that the proposed PWM scheme has better performance than the other methods such as the natural PWM and the direct PWM.
Power Parameters Analysis and Evaluation using Visualization of Distortion Factor for Motor Drive System
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 15~22
The goal of this paper is to propose analyzing and evaluating method of power parameters for motor drive system with various experimental graphic screens and numerical results and to develop the proposed system. A developed system is made up 586-PC and DSP board, motor drive system, power parameters analyzing and evaluating software for windows. Power parameters are analyzed using correlation signal processing techniques based on the correlation between voltage and current waveforms. Analysis results are visualized by 3-D current coordinates, and it is compared and evaluated with conventional time/ frequency domain. To verify the validity of the proposed system, capacitor run type single phase induction motor and thyristor speed controller is used for analyzing. Power and harmonic parameters of motor drive system is analyzed and verified, with varying fire angle of thyristor speed controller, and the proposed approach is to confirm validity
New Instantaneous Torque Estimation and Control for PM Synchronous Motor
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 23~35
A new instantaneous torque control is presented for a high performance control of a permanent magnet(PM) synchronous motor. In order to deal with the torque pulsating problem of a PM synchronous motor in a low speed region, new torque estimation and cotrol techniques are proposed. The linkage flux of a PM synchronous motor is estimated using a model reference adaptive system technique and the torque is instantaneously controlled by the proposed torque controller combining an integral variable structure control with a space vector PWM. The proposed control provides the advantage of reducing the torque pulsation caused by the non-sinusoidal flux distribution. This control strategy is applied to the high torque PM synchronous motor drive system for direct drive applications and implemented by using a software of the DSP TMS320C30. The simulations and experiments are carried out for this system and the results well demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed control.
A Simple Resonant Link Inverter for a Discrete-Time Current Control
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 36~45
A simple source voltage clamped resonant link (SVCRL) inverter is proposed to clamp the DC link voltage to the input source voltage and reduce the current rating of resonant inductor. The current control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using a predictive current control technique (PCCT) employing the SVCRL inverter is also investigated to overcome the disadvantage of the current regulated delta modulation (CRDM) control technique. By using the PCCT based on the discrete model of a PMSM and estimation of back EMF, the minimized current ripple with small number of switchings can be obtained. Finally, the comparative computer simulation and experimental results are given to show the usefulness of the proposed technique.
Torque-Fluctuation Reduction Inverter for SRM Driving
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 46~52
This paper describes a current-shaping method for the production of constant torque of SRM under the nonlinear magnetic saturation condition. A current detection technique in the inductance increasing region and an approximation technique for modeling of nonlinear inductance profile are adopted. In the proposed system, a single switching angle control and voltage control is used to shape the current waveform for the generation of flat torque at any given load condition. Finally the validity of the proposed method was verified using a constructed 3HP 6/4 SRM.

The magnetic field circuit for the small and simple structure with low power consumption is introduced and new materials of yoke for small motor system is suggested. Especially, the relation with remained magnetic field and operation duration time is analyzed by experimental results. Some problems of nonlinear torque characteristics included in this system is considered to obtain the simple and low cost structure in domestic production. Furthermore, development procedure is suggested for iris assembly and some methods to reduce the burr with some check points for small precise accessories are explained.
The Optimization of Current Control in DC/AC Power Converters under Digital Control with Microprocessor
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 61~69
In this paper, discrete current control of voltage source inverters is proposed. As a current control scheme, the constant switching frequency predictive current control is adopted and implemented with DSP microprocessor system. In particular, the proposed method is for the compensation of the control lagging due to calculation delays in the microprocessor controller. In controlling the current, the inverter output voltage saturation problem is inevitable and usually affects the current control performance. So, the saturation boundary condition of the inverter output voltage and its effects on the current controal performance of the proposed current control scheme are investigated with experiment. Finally, the proposed scheme is applied to the active power filter system and some results are described for validation.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 70~76
A switch-mode AC/DC converter with high input power factor and sinusoidal input current waveforms is analyzed and modelled for computer simulation. The developed mathematical model for this converter can be used to examine the transient and steady-state performance for selecting the proper ratings of filter, boost inductor and semiconductor devices or the effects of this converter under normal and fault operating conditions on the associated power systems. The proposed model and computer programs are confirmed by comparing with the experimental results.
Control System Design and Performance Analysis for Transmission Static Compensator
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 3, issue 1, 1998, Pages 77~84
This paper describes a control system design for the transmission STATCOM by applying a no-linear state feedback, and the performance analysis of the control system by simulations and scaled-model experiments. A mathematical model for the STATCOM was derived using a 3-phase equivalent circuit and a perturbation state equation with respect to a typical operating point. A transfer function to describe the dynamics of STATCOM was derived by considering nonlinear state feedback. A controller design was completed by analyzing the feedback system stability with root locus method. The performance analysis of the conceived control system was verified by simulations with the EMTP and experiments with scaled model, assuming that the STATCOM is connected to an 154kV transmission system. The results show that the conceived control system has excellent performance to control the reactive power of the transmission system.
