A SRM driving with voltage and switching angle for maximum torque/efficiency and minimum torque ripple
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 309~317
This paper presents the switching angle and voltage to maximize torque/efficiency and minimize torque ripple in the 4-phase 6-poles Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM). SRM drive has high saturation and nonlinear characteristics of inductance. So we cannot hard to find optimal condition by using analytic method. Therefore it is hard to find the operating the switching angle and voltage through the approximated analysis and computer simulation by using SIMULINK according to the speed and torque required by load. From the results, we can say that the optimum average voltage is determined by the load only and the speed is determined by the optimum turn-on/off angle only. And the maximum efficiency and minimum torque ripple depend on switching angle, not on voltage. And then one-chip microcontroller controls the switching angle and voltage of an asymmetrical inverter in the SRM driver. This drive method, which is expect that the driving methods, which are maximizing torque/efficiency and minimizing torque ripple, will be suitable for the electric vehicle, the industrial application and household appliances.
Dynamic Performance of HVDC according to Excitation System Characteristics of Synchronous Compensator in a Weak AC System
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 318~326
This paper analyses with the dynamic performance of HVDC System connected to a weak AC system for varying exciter characteristics of synchronous machines connected at the converter bus. Conventionally capacitors are used to supply reactive power requirement at a strong converter bus. However the installation and synchronous machine is essential in a isolated weak network to re-start after a shutdown of HVDC and to increase strength. The dynamic performance of a synchronous machine depends on the characteristics depends on its exciter characteristics. In this paper, several excites types are used to investigate their effect on the dynamic performance of the HVDC system and modifications to standard exciter topogical are suggested to mitigate observed problems.
Application of Welding Machine Circuit of Full Bridge Converter using Circuit Averaging Method
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 327~334
In this paper, the circuit model using circuit averaging method for full bridge for full bridge converter is suggested. This model can represent the physical characteristics of converter circuits appropriately. At most of high capacity DC-DC converter application parts, full bridge converter is adapted for main circuit of power supply. Design and analysis of full bridge converter is no trouble with circuit model. The validity of circuit model is verified through computer simulation and practical welding experiment of welding machine with full bridge converted model.
A Single-Phase Active Power Filter Control with Load Current Estimation Method
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 335~342
A new control method for a single-phase active power filter, based on a load current estimation using a DC capacitor voltage of active power filter without sensing nonlinear load current, is proposed in this paper. Because the method proposed can remove the load current sensor in comparison with a conventional method sensing the load current and DC capacitor voltage together, it can make the active power filter easy installation, low cost, small size with no performance detriment. In addition, sample-hold technique and proportional control method is adopted to control the DC capacitor voltage and as no delay element such as LPF or PI control in the conventional method is used, the transient response is fast and good. Operation of a single-phase active power filter which consist of eight mode is explained according to utility voltage, compensation current and switch state, and compensation characteristics of active power filter using proposed method is verified by experiment.
Sensorless speed control of a Switched Reluctance Motor using Fuzzy position estimation algorithm
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 343~351
This paper introduces a new rotor position estimation algorithm for the Switched Reluctance Motor, based on the magnetizing curves only at aligned and unaligned rotor positions. The flux linkage is calculated by measured data from phase voltage and phase current, and calculated data are used as the input of magnetizing profiles for rotor position detection. The fuzzy flux observer using novel knowledge-based fuzzy controller are presented to achieve sensorless control of the SRM. The method for selecting optimal angle is proposed for the rotor position detection. The robustness of the proposed algorithm is proved through the comparison of the simulation and experimental results.
Vector Control of Induction Motor Using Hybrid Controller
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 352~357
The vector control scheme is usually applied to the high performance induction motor drives. The PI controller is adopted traditionally to control the motor speed and currents in the vector control scheme. In this case, the dynamic performance of the induction motor is dependent on the PI gains and the gain optimization is necessary in order to get a good dynamic performance. But, it is very hard to optimize the PI gains uniquely within the speed control range because the equivalent model of the motor control system should be known exactly. In this paper, we propose the hybrid control scheme to remove the defects of PI controller. The hybrid control scheme includes the simplified fuzzy controller which operates in the transient state and the PI controller which operates in the steady state. The proposed scheme is applied to the vector control for induction motor, and the digital simulation and the experimental results are given to verify the proposed scheme.
Input and Output Characteristics of Input Current Controlled Inverter Arc Welding Machine with High Efficiency
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 358~369
Shielded metal arc welding machines with AC transformer have been widely used for thin-plate welding applications. Because of being bulky, heavy and of tap-changing property, so the SMAW's are changing to new power electronic circuits such as inverter circuit in order to reduce the system size and also to improve the welding performances at input output sides. The PWM inverter arc welding machine with diode rectifier has better output welding performances but it is has the plentiful harmonics and the lower input power factor. To solve these problems, input current-controlled scheme is considered for PWM inverter arc welding system, and then total input power factor is maintained to be more than 99%. Also a new combined control is proposed which can control both instantaeous welding output voltage and current under constant power condition, and as a result the variations of instantaneous current and voltage can be reduced to very narrow range in the V-I curve relationship, and hence the variance of welding current and voltage become so reduced. In addition the spatter generated during welding process is greatly reduced up to 70%. And the overall effiency can be improved up to 10%, which becomes higher when the load is lower.
A Stduy on the Signal Anti-reduction Equipment in Power Line Communication
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 370~376
In this paper, a communication system that is not using the communication line but power line is presented. It will be very useful for an information-oriented society with tele-metering and home automation. Conventional system has a difficulty in transmitting information due to decreasing communication voltage and increasing carrier current. Proposed idea is a special type switching amplifier system which has a low inner resistance. It can provide reactive power and does not have low impedance between the transceivers. This new system is proposed to overcome the loss of conductor load in a PLC system.

STATCOM is a custom power device in a way and can be used in a similar way for the dynamic compensation of power transmission systems, providing reactive power compensation, voltage regulation and mitigation of voltage flicker. It is shown that the STATCOM has clear advantages in areas such as; providing reactive power compensation and improving power factor.
An Improved ZVS Partial Series Resonant DC/DC Converter with Low Conduction Losses
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 386~393
This paper presents an improved ZVS partial series resonant DC/DC converter (PSRC) with low conduction losses, suitable for high power and high frequency applications. The proposed PSRC have advantages of zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of main switches for entire load ranges low conduction losses of main switches by decreasing current stresses. Also the reduction of the effective duty cycle is not occurred during the resonant period of the main circuit because the auxiliary circuit of the proposed converter is placed out of the main power path. The auxiliary circuit is composed with passive components, which are an inductor, two capacitors, two diodes, and a saturable inductor. An improved ZVS PSRC has so much characteristics with respect to the overall system efficiency and to the reduction of current stresses. The operation principles of the proposed converter are explained in detail and the various simulated and experimental results show the validity of the proposed converter.
FACTS Application for the Voltage Stability with the Analysis of Bifurcation Theory
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 394~402
This paper proposes a bifurcation theory method applied for voltage stability analysis and shows the improvement of voltage stability by attaching the FACTS devices in the power system. A power system is generally expressed by a set of equations of highly nonlinear dynamical system which includes system parameters(real or reactive power). Sometimes variation of parameters in the system may result in complication behaviors which give rise to system instability. The addition of FACTS increases the range of voltage stability in the power system. The effect of FACTS which improves voltage stability are illustrated in the case studies by delaying of Unstable Hopf Bifurcation and Saddle Node Bifurcation.

The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 403~408
In this paper, voltage control APF(Active Power Filter) is introduced to improve power factor and reduce harmonics generated from nonlinear load. The voltage controlled APF which is consisted of inverter and passive filter operates with nonlinear load simultaneously. Real power supplies from main power to load and reactive power provides from APF to load. According to the results o experiment and simulation, it is proved that the proposed system has the performance of improving power factor and reducing harmonics.
Fault Detection and Isolation of Parallel Operation of Two Converters Using Zero Current Transformer Method
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 5, issue 4, 2000, Pages 409~416
In case of operating two converters in parallel with ZCT operation method using one current sensor for fault tolerance by system characteristics, identifying fault detection and isolation is difficult of which converter is fault since the ZCT output is a difference of two converters' supply current when a converter has fault. This thesis suggest a fault detection and isolation method of converter in case of operating two converters in parallel for fault tolerant system and verified this suggested method through an experiment.
