Rotor Flux Estimation of an Induction Motor using the Extended Luenberger Observer
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 115~124
In this paper, authors propose a new nonlinear rotor flux observer for rotor field oriented control of an induction motor which is designed based on the extended Luenberger Observer theory. Extended Luenberger Observer requires minimal solution of nonlinear partial differential equation on its coordinate transformation and linearization needed on a nonlinear observer design in general. The proposed rotor flux observer is derived from the 2 phase model of induction motor on the orthogonal coordination and it has the reduce gain matrix. Simulation and experimentation were performed under the conventional indirect vector control and direct vector control with the proposed observer at different rotor resistance. Simulation results show that the convergence of the proposed observer is influenced by the chosen eigenvalues. Experimentation results on load operation show the direct vector control with the proposed observer is better than the indirect vector control to maintain the characteristics of the vector control.
Development of Driving System for Railway Vehicle using Vector Control
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 125~131
This paper presents a application of vector control strategy to 1.2MVA traction drive for railway vehicle. The vector control required the control of the phase and amplitude of output voltage vector. But in case of traction system for railway vehicle, the one-pulse mode is used at high speed region in order to utilize the link voltage fully. So it is impossible to control the flux and torque axis current instantaneously and independently in the region. So this paper proposes a mixed control algorithm, where the vector control strategy at low speed region and slip-frequency control strategy at high speed region is used. And precise switching technique between the two different control strategy is proposed. The proposed strategy is verified by experimental results with a 1.2MVA traction drive system with four 210kW induction motors.
A Study on the Harmonic Current Characteristics of Universal Motro with Speed Controller
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 132~140
A universal motor is a small dc series machine motor that is designed to operate from an ac machine. The characteristics of universal motors are high no-load and staring torque. Because of the high operating speed, the size of these motors for a given hp rating is typically smaller that other fractional hp ac machine, making it ideal for hand-held tools and appliances where weight, compactness, and speed are importance factors. A phase-angle control with AC drive system gains a high popularity due to their simple implementation, but contains the disadvantage of their poor input power factor, subharmonic current. Pulse width modulation control with DC drive systems increase the power factor as without delay phase angle. This paper analyzed the subharmonic characteristics of the phase angle control system that is controlled by zero voltage crossing similar to traditional method, and the dc chopper system that is used PWM.
EMI Analysis and Solution for Low Power Switching Power Supply
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 141~148
There are several ways for reducing EMI(Electromagnetic Interference) in the switching power supply, which can be largely divided into suppression methods in the noise source, noise path solution, and attenuation techniques using the filter. In this paper, the method will be discussed to simplify the design process of the filter along with the noise path solution. In particular, some practical EMI suppression methods are suggested for SMPS, which is widely used recently, with or without a chassis, respectively and also verified through the experimental results of a 10W flyback converter.
A Nonlinear Speed Control for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Using a Simple Disturbance Estimation Technique
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 149~157
A nonlinear speed control for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using a simple disturbance estimation technique is presented. By using a feedback linearization scheme, the nonlinear motor model can be linearized in a controllable canonical form, and the desired speed dynamics can be obtained based on the linearized model. This technique, however, gives an undesirable output performance under the mismatch of the system parameters and load conditions. To cancel disturbance by parameter variation, the controller parameters will be estimated by using a disturbance observer theory where the disturbance torque and flux linkage are estimated. since only the two reduced order observers are used for the parameter estimations, the observer designs are considerably simple and the additional load for computation of the controller is negligibly small. The proposed control scheme is implemented on a PMSM using DSP TMS320C31 and the effectiveness is verified through the comparative simulations and experiments.
Input Current/Torque Ripple Compensation of Current Source Induction Motor Drives using Active Power Filters
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 158~163
Current Source Inverter(CSI), operated in square wave mode, is more efficient thant the PWM CSI because of increased cost, greater complexity of control algorithm and substantial switching losses, EMI. But, the square wave output current of CSI, rich in low order harmonics produce motor torque ripples. Therefore, in this paper, describes active power filters for compensating square wave input current of current source induction motor. Also, notch filtering as compensation algorithm is employed. To confirm the validity of proposed system, PSIM simulation results are presented and discussed.

Analysis of Control Algorithm for Instantaneous Voltage Sag Corrector
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 173~179
This paper represents the control algorithm of the instantaneous voltage sag corrector for the power quality enhancement in distribution line. Especially, a novel detection technique of the symmetrical components is proposed for the analysis of the three-phase unbalanced and asymmetrical problems caused by the single line ground fault which is he most frequent event. This proposed method is based on the simple calculation and the control references of the symmetrical components for voltage compensation can be described as dc value without any other phase detection procedure. And also, for the generation of the reference voltages, the UF and MF defined by IEC is considered. Using this proposed control algorithm, the compensator has the fast dynamic characteristics and the THD of the compensated voltage waveform is very low. Finally, the validity of the proposed algorithm is proved by the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation and experimental results.
Improvement of Torque Ripple Using Compensation for the Phase Delay of Winding Inductance on Brushless DC Motor
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 180~190
In this paper, a method of reducing torque ripples caused by phase winding inductances in BLDCM(Brushless DC Motor) drives is presented. In order to compensate the inductive current delays, commutation angle is controlled by the value compensating angle varied in accordance with rotational speed. Using the microprocessor AVR 8515, the proposed compensator is implemented and experiments are done with a 4-pole 3-phase BLDCM. The results show the remarkable reduction of torque ripple at whole speed ranges.
A Study on New Current Controller for 7-Phase BLDC Motor Drive System
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 191~201
Recently, the demand of motor for industrial, household machinery is increasing. As Switching devices and control technology are progressing, so the use of BLDC Motor is increasing. But 3-Phase BLDC Motor generally used has pulsating torque and speed variation in commutation, so the range of its application is limited to high speed operation. Especially, to solve these problems, it is necessary to increase phase of Motor, so study of Poly-Phase BLDC Motor is progressing. However, when hysteresis current controller is used, switching frequency is highly increasing. In this paper, 7-Phase BLDC Motor drive system is designed. Also MSTC(Minimum Switching Time Controller) is proposed and with simulation and experiment, there validities are verified.
Development of Variable Speed Digital Control System for SRM using Simple Position Detector
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 202~208
A Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) has double salient poles structure and the phase windings are wound in stator. SRM hase more simple structure that of other motor, thus manufacture cost is low, mechanically strong, reliable to a poor environment such as high temperature, and maintenance cost is low because of brushless. SRM needs position detector to get rotator position information for phase excitation and tachometer or encoder for constant speed operation. But, this paper doesn\`s use an encoder of high cost for velocity measurement of rotator. Instead of it, the algorithm for position detection and velocity estimation from simple slotted disk has been proposed and developed. To implement variable speed digital control system with velocity estimation algorithm, the TMS320F240-20MIPS fixed point arithmetic processor of TI corporation is used. The experimental results of the developing system are enable to control speed with wide range, not only single pulse, hard chopping mode and soft chopping, ut also variable speed control, and advance angle control.
A Three Level ZVZCS Phase-Shifted DC/DC Converter Using A Tapped Inductor And A Snubber Capacitor
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 209~216
The conventional three-level high frequency phase-shifted dc/dc converter has a disadvantage that a circulating current flows through transformer and switching devices during the freewheeling interval. Due to this circulating current and RMS current stress, conduction losses of transformer and switching devices increases. To alleviate these problems, we propose an improved three-level Zero Voltage and Zero Current Switchig (ZVZCS) dc/dc converter using a tapped inductor, a snubber capacitor and two snubber diodes attached at the secondary side of transformer. The proposed ZVZCS converter is verified on a 7kW, 30kHz experimental prototype.
The Design of high Efficiency APLC for the Low Power load
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 6, issue 2, 2001, Pages 217~221
In this paper, APLC(Active Power Line Conditioner) is designed for low consumed power electrical equipment such as communication electronic equipment, computer sever and etc.. Because APLC which is hunted to the mains controls only the elements of harmonics, the designed APLC is very high efficient. Additionally, controller designed with low cost micro-controller and analog circuit has good merit economically. Simulation and experimental results on a prototype verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
