A Study on the Characteristics of Thyristor Controlled Shunt Compensator

The rotor flux position is needed to perform vector control of induction motor. But rotor speed information is needed to get accurate the rotor flux position. It is difficult to implement the open loop method without speed information or the motor equation only because of noise or the motor parameter error. This paper presents the speed estimator can use the arbitrary rotor flux observer by separating the flux observer and speed estimator and apply the three flux observers proposed by Ohtani, Lorenz and full order flux observer. The validity of speed estimator presented is verified and the performance using the three rotor flux observers is analyzed by the simulation and experiment.
The Study of Variable Polarity AC Pulse MIG Arc Welding System

Joining thin aluminum alloy is difficult using most welding techniques. Many of problems associated burn-through by the high heat input. Common welding techniques are TIG, MIG, and MIG-PULSE welding. The VP-GMAW provides more control of the heat balance in the welding arc by taking advantage of the different arc characteristics obtained with each of the two polarities. In this paper, we proposed new VP-GMAW method by control DSP 320C32, and the characteristic and experiment result-voltage, current, welding bead, penetration by this method are presented.
Optimal System Design and Minimization of Conducted EMI Noise in Elevator Inverter System by Customized IPM

This paper deals with the optimal design of a elevator inverter system based on the customized IPM. The proposed method reduces dv/dt and di/dt, which resulted in the minimized conducted EMI noise without an additional circuitry. It only optimizes the value of gate resistor in the IGBT embedded in the IPM. In order to optimize the customized IPM to a elevator system, we simulated and measured the spike voltage and the motor surge voltage including the temperature variation due to the switching losses at the IPM case and heat-sink. As a result, thanks to the optimized value of the gate resister in the IPM, the conducted EMI noise is reduced approx. 5∼10 [dB
V] in a particular frequency domain.
Load Sharing Control of Driven Roll in Continuous Caster

As the continuous casting process is to product slab with high temperature liquid steel, the main role of strand driven roll is to withdraw slab from mold as operator set up casting speed pattern. The strand driven roll in old cast machine is controlled casting speed only. Due to inaccuracies in drive setting up, varying roll diameters, bulging in the product, withdrawal force was distributed irregularly. As a result, because of horizontal crack in slab comer, high casting speed can't be achieved. In this paper, the correlation between the distribution of withdrawal force and slab quality is investigated and the new control algorithm which can be distributed regularly the withdrawal force of strand driven roll is proposed. The principle of proposed algorithm is not to control motor torque directly but to control motor speed reference according to sharing ratio of withdrawal force which is set up in high level controller. The proposed algorithm implemented in POSCO Kwangyang 1-4 continuous casting plant.
Test method for Motor/controller for Electric Vehicle

Test procedure for Electric Vehicle(EV) motor/controller has been developed. Most of existing standards mainly focus on minimum requirements for safe operation. However, detailed test procedures are not covered in the standard. In order to develop test items, methods and procedures which should be strictly applied to EV motor and controller, existing standards have been reviewed by the expert group in Korea. Based on their feedback, standard test procedure was proposed. Test procedure especially for combined motor and controller has been proposed. As a load lot the tested motor, M-G set, eddy current type engine dynamo and AC dynamo were used. Test procedures for the driving cycle test and regeneration test were proposed.
A Study on the Development of Sensorless Drive System for Brushless DC Motor of Electrical Vehicle

Generally, brushless DC motor(BLDCM) driving system uses hall sensors or encoders as the mechanical position or speed sensors. It is necessary to achieve the information's of rotor position for driving trapezoidal type brushless DC motor without any position sensor. This paper proposes a sensorless driving system with absolute rotor position detecting circuit which acquires both commutating phase and commutating time by analyzing motor phase voltages. Proposed system is applied to a 10k[W] rating motor which actually used in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. The experimental results will show the validity of the proposed system and the practical use of proposed sensorless drive.
Estimation of Rotor Position at Standstill of Switched Reluctance Motor Using Squared Euclidean Distance

In this paper, an estimation technique of initial rotor position at standstill in Switched Reluctance Motor(SRM) is proposed. In case search coils are used as a position sensor, it has many advantages like low cost, decrease in the volume, high robust characteristics and wide applications. However, the initial rotor position detection is very difficult because the search coil's EMF is not exist at a standstill. In this paper, a near estimation method of initial rotor position is suggested using squared Euclidean distance. The simulation and experiment for the proposed method are achieved. The validity of the proposed method is verified by experimental results.
Distribution Characteristics of Irregular Voltage in Stator Windings of IGBT PWM Inverter-Fed Induction Motors

This paper describes distribution characteristics of switching surge voltage in stator windings of induction motor driven by IGBT PWM inverter. To analyze the voltage distribution between the turns and coils of stator winding, equivalent circuit model of induction motor including cable was proposed and high frequency parameter is computed by using finite-element method (FEM). From the electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation of the whole system for induction motor, feeder cable, and PWM inverter, the variable effect on rising time of the inverter, cable length, and switching frequency on the voltage distribution is also presented. In order to experiment, an induction motor, 380[V], 50[HP], with taps from one phase are built to consider the voltage distribution so that these results can be helpful when filter was designed to remove high dv/dt.
Design of On-line Readymixed Concrete Production System Using CAN Network

This paper describes the on-line readymixed concrete production system using CAN network, which is a leading industrial control network. The CAN network interface circuits for moisture sensor and load cell sensor we designed for CAN network of readymixed concrete production system, respectively, and also the method for networking 2-states devices such as limit switch and lamp is suggested. The operating status of a overall remicon production system is monitored, and also the system is controlled with host computer through the network. The CAN network interface method is applied to the real readymixed concrete production system to verify the performance of proposed method.
Anti-Slip Control by Adhesion Effort Estimation of 1C-4 Minimized Railway Vehicle using Load Torque Disturbance Observer

In electric motor coaches, the rolling stocks move by the adhesive effort between rail and driving wheel. Generally, the adhesive effort is defined by the function of both the weight of electric motor coach and the adhesive effort between rails and driving wheel. The characteristics of adhesive effort is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheel. When the adhesive effort decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. This paper proposes a re-adhesion control algorithm which uses the maximum adhesive effort by instantaneous estimation of adhesion force using load torque disturbance observer. Based on this estimated adhesive effort, the re-adhesion control Is peformed to obtain the maximum transfer of the tractive effort.
