Development of Regenerative Inverter for Electric Railway Using Space Vector PWM
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 97~104
As a device that returns surplus energy, regenerated from trains to d.c. source, to a.c. system and reuses it, the thyristor Inverter has been widely used. Because the conventional thyristor inverter is a unidirectional phase-controlled device, it Is Impossible to control the power factor of its output. Moreover, harmonics emission is high and it needs to take a additional filter. In this paper, to solve the problems stated above, the inverter, which can control real and reactive power by adopting IGBT modules as switching elements and being controlled by means of space vector PWM, is developed. Considering high economical efficiency and reliability in order to apply to the system for commercial use, the developed inverter is equipped with fully digital control system and low pass filter, and reduces harmonics and has compact size. The detail description about the developed inverter is stated in various respects: design criteria, technical description, power circuits, control techniques, the developed system, test results, etc.

The Design of High-power BLDC Motor with Maximum Torque at Low Speed for Ship Propulsion
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 112~118
Recently, development of rare earth permanent magnet with the high remanence, high coercivity allows the design of brushless motors with very high efficiency over a wide speed range. Cogging torque is produced in a permanent magnet by magnetic attraction between the rotor mounted permanent magnet and the stator teeth. It is an undesired effect that contributes to output ripple, vibration, and noise of machine. This cogging torque can be reduced by variation of magnet arc length, airgap length, magnet thickness, shifting the magnetic pole and varying the radial shoe depth and etc. In this paper, some airgap length and magnet arc that reduce cogging torque are found by finite element method(FEM) and Maxwell stress tensor method. The SPM(Surface Permanent Magnet) type of high-power Brushless DC (BLDC) motor is optimized as a sample model.
A Study on the Development of Superheater Using High-Frequency Resonant Inverter for Induction Heating
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 119~125
This paper is described the indirect induction heated boiler system and induction heated hot air producer using the voltage-fed series resonant high-frequency inverter which can operate in the frequency range from 20〔KHz〕 to 50〔KHz〕. A specially designed Induction heater, which is composed of laminated stainless assembly with many tiny holes and interconnected spot welding points between stainless plates, is inserted into the ceramic type vessel with external working coil. This working coil is connected to the resonant inverter. In the induction heater, it's primary heating section creates low-pressure saturated steam and secondary heating section generates heat distribution evaporating fluid from the turbulence fluid which is flowing through the vessel. The operating performances of this unique appliance in next generation and its effectiveness are evaluated and discussed from the practical point of view.
A Current Control Algorithm for Torque Ripple Reduction of Four-Switch Three-Phase Brushless DC Motors
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 126~133
In this paper, a new current control algorithm is proposed for four-switch three-phase brushless DC(BLDC) motor drives, which are suitable for low cost applications. A current reference generation scheme is developed and implemented to obtain high performance characteristics in the four-switch system, such as small torque ripple and fast dynamic speed/torque response. Especially, the proposed scheme can successfully reduce the torque ripple during commutations, so that it can be expected that the four-switch system can be much more practically applied for the industrial application areas.
A Study on Synchronous Rectification of Push-Pull Converter for Efficiency Improvement
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 134~141
This paper presents a method of synchronous rectifier(SR) for improving the efficiency in DC/DC converter. The proposed method is used push-pull topology on primary as a single winding self driven synchronous rectification(SWSDSR). Specially, this method can improve efficiency to turn on SR switch during dead time. Finally, the simulation and experimental results will be given to show comparison and analysis on the efficiency between self driven synchronous rectification(SDSR) and SWSDSR method.
A Study on the Control System of Permanent Magnet Linear Synchronous Motor Applied to the Z-axis Operation Structure
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 142~149
PMLSM(Permanent Magnet linear Synchronous Motor) has widely applied to industrial automations, machine tools and semiconductor equipments due to the merit on the reduction of noise, vibration and the superior dynamic characteristics in comparison to the conventional method, which uses mechanical transfer equipments. Especially, in the case of applying to Z-axis operation structure, control system needs the method of an initial angle setting and the improvement of up/down operation characteristics. This paper proposes an initial angle setting algorithm and a variable gain schedule using real speed and moving direction to improve up/down operation characteristics. The effectiveness of proposed algorithms Is demonstrated by comparing to a conventional gain system via 4-point absolute positions profile with each velocity, acceleration and deceleration.

Linearized Modeling and Variable Position Control of Magnetic Levitator Using DSP
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 158~162
The magnetic levitator is the device which can float a magnetic material at the midair by electromagnetic force and it's principle can be applied to the high speed magnetic bearing or magnetic levitation train. There are many difficulties to control, because the magnetic levitator is basically a nonlinear and unstable system. In this paper, this system is modeled assuming that it is a linear system nearby an operating point, and a proportional and derivative(PD) position controller is designed to carry out the variable position control. The performance of position control response is shown through simulation and experiment. A prototype magnetic levitator is constructed using PWM converter and DSP(Digital Signal Processor) based control board.
Method for Measuring Absolute Position of a Yard Crane for Port Automation
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 163~170
Since 1960s, a container shipping volume has increased dramatically and continuous on a trend of rapid growth, and so the number of containers handled at the port increases. The position measurement of the yard crane is very important for improving the operating efficiency of the port. This paper describes the method to measure the absolute position of yard crane accurately and rapidly, using both the output pulse of an encoder and infrared sensors. The crane position is calculated by counting the output pulse of an incremental encoder, which is mounted on the wheel in the crane. By the way, the wheel slippage on rail may cause some errors in the crane position information obtained from encoder pulse, and the infrared sensor is used to compensate for errors in the crane position information. The performance of proposed method is verified on experimental results with the simulator of yard crane, the size of which is about 1/10 with the real crane.

Power Spectrum of Two-Phase and Three-Phase RCD-PWM Scheme for Switching Noise Reduction of Induction Motors
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 178~186
This paper proposes a two-phase RCD-PWM scheme which is much better than a three-phase RCD-PWM scheme from the standpoint of the broadening and linearizing effect of the power spectrum. To implement the proposed scheme and conventional scheme, the experiment based on the SAB-Cl67 micro-controller was executed. Based on the space vector modulation technique, the duty ratio of the pulses is calculated using the SAB-Cl67 and each of PWM pulses is located randomly in each switching interval. The power spectrum of the output voltage, output current, the d.c link current and the acoustic noise radiated from inverter drives are experimentally investigated. 1'hen, the performance of the proposed scheme was compared and discussed with the conventional scheme.
Design of Voltage Equalizer of Li-ion Battery Pack
The Transactions of the Korean Institute of Power Electronics, volume 9, issue 2, 2004, Pages 187~193
For a power source of usual electronic devices such as PDA, smart phone, UPS and electric vehicle, the battery made of serially connected multiple cells is generally used. In this case, if there are some unbalanced among cell voltages, the total lifetime and the total capacity of the battery are limited to a lower value. To maintain a balanced condition in cells, an effective method of regulating the cell voltage in indispensable. In this paper, we propose the design of a balancing circuit for electronic appliances. The balancing system was controlled by a micro-controller which enables to implement the balancing action during charging period. Proposed method has been verified by the experiment using the charger and recorder. The experimental results show that the individual battery equalization can improve battery capacity and battery lifetime and performance through an extended operational time.
