Quantification and Varietal Variation of Rutin in Mulberry Fruits

Rutin has many beneficial effects on human health. It was established that rutin antagonizes the increase of capillary fragility associated with hemorrhagic disease, reduces high blood pressure, decreases the permeability of the vessels, and has an antiedema effect, reduces the risk of arteriosclerosis, and shows antioxidant activity. Rutin analysis with mulberry fruits was carried out by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to reveal the possibility of source of functional food. As a result, mean content of fifty accessions was 0.14±0.050% DW. Among the tested fifty accessions, 'Sabangso' was showed the highest rutin in 0.29%DW, whereas 'Simseol' was the lowest content in 0.05% DW. Also, we researched the change of rutin content according to harvested date. The rutin contents of earlier harvested groups were higher than later harvested groups. Simultaneously, fruity characteristics as well as rutin content were researched and analyzed to select the functional mulberry varieties for the production of fruit. From the six accessions which were contained high rutin content, we selected three suitable varieties such as 'Ficus', 'Kangsun', and 'Palcheongsipyung'.
Fruity Characteristics of Mulberry Varieties for the Production of Fruit

We evaluated fruity characteristics to select the desirable mulberry varieties for the production of fruit from 2002 to 2003. Tested items were total yield, weight of single fruit, soluble solids and fruit size including length, width, and petiole length. We started yield of mulberry fruits from 27th of May, and continued for two weeks or three weeks according to mulberry varieties. 'Susungppong', 'Cheongnosang', and 'Jeolgokchosaeng(Chungbuk)' were showed high and similar quantity for two years. In weight of single fruit, 'Jeolgokchosaeng(Chungbuk)' and 'Ficus' were 4.6 g respectively. 14 mulberry varieties were showed more than 17 Brix % in soluble solids. From that results, eight suitable varieties such as 'Jeolgokchosaeng(Chungbuk)', 'Dangsang 7', 'Jangsosang', 'Susungppong', 'Suwonnosang', 'Palcheongsipyung', 'Kangsun', and 'Jukcheonchosaeng' were selected for the production of fruit.
Breeding of Good Quality Leaves High Yielding Mulberry Cultivar "Suilppong" (Morus alba L.)

New triploid mulberry cultivar, Suilppong was bred among selected lines from F
seedlings obtained by crossing the female, artificial tetraploid No. 411 which obtained from Chungilppong seedlings, and the male, Kugsang 21. Local adaptability test has been carried out at four places (Suwon, Kongju, Jeonju and Jangsung) for five years since 1997. Leaf quality was tested by silkworm rearing for two silkworm rearing seasons (spring and autumn) at Suwon in 2000. Suilppong was recognized to be superior in productivity to control cultivar, Kaeryangppong. The new cultivar, Suilppong, has following agronomic characteristics as compared with Kaeryangnppong, which is leading cultivar widely cultivating in Korea. It is belonging to Morus alba L. with mixed shapes from the ovate to 5 lobated leaf shape, sprouting in spring nearly the same to the Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.), high leaf yielding of 20% compared to Kaeryangppong (Morus alba L.). It is adaptable to everywhere except the places where cold damage occurs frequently in Korea. Suilppong is recommended to rear silkworms not only in spring but also in autumn besides for young silkworms.
Study on the Efficient Utilization of Entomopathogenic Fungi, Cordyceps Species

For the purpose of accumulating the research outcomes on Cordyceps and retrieving them efficiently, this study was carried out to identify and standardize the key factors in cultivating Paecilomyces tenuipes and classifying characteristics of Cordyceps. The key factors in cultivating Paecilomyces tenuipes are divided into three major sections according to its stage: silkworm rearing period, cultivation period, and preservation period. Silkworm rearing and cultivation sections are divided into three sub-sections: temperature, humidity, and duration. There are other factors including rearing tools, equipment etc. The key factors in classifying characteristics of Cordyceps are divided into 14 items, 41 divisions on the basis of its general features and its taxonomic features. 14 items contain general article, host, perithecium, conidia, etc. 41 divisions are partitioned by its size and color. The classification system of Kobayasi (1940) or of Shimizu (1994) was adopted for the key factors of Cordyceps species and their anarmorphs.
Cognitive Ability Enhancement Effects in Rats by B. mori Fibroin Enzymatic Hydrolysate

We were investigated the cognitive ability enhancement in rats using B. mori fibroin molecular controlled hydrolysate by preparative recycle HPLC system. Also, some of its physicochemical properties and free amino acid components were investigated, too. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrum are measured different pattern between high (HF) and low (LF) molecular controlled B. mori fibroin samples, respectively. The in vitro test by neuron primary cell culture are showed dependent on molecular weight (Mw) of B. mori fibroin in the order of LF > MF > HF, too. However, the memorial effects in rats by in vivo test are large dependent molecular weight on that maximum 50% than control. Also, the memorial effect was higher than the enzymatic relative and acid hydrolysate, which was 50.0

Infrared Spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry of Silk Fibroin/Hyaluronic Acid Blend Film

Bombyx mori silk fibroin/hyaluronic acid blend films were prepared by mixing aqueous solution of B. mori silk fibroin and hyaluronic acid. According to the FTIR spectra, no interaction between silk fibroin and hyaluronic acid was found. The conformation of silk fibroin in blend films was changed from random coil to
-sheet structure by treatment of EDC ethanol solution. Thermal degradation peak of silk fibroin and hyaluronic acid was also not altered by blending each other. The average swelling ratio of silk fibroin/hyaluronic acid blend films was 70. Therefore, silk fibroin/hyaluronic acid blend films might be one of possible wound dressing materials.
Physical Characteristics of Silk Gayageum Strings on the Preparing Conditions

Gayageum and Geomungo are the traditional stringed music instrument in Korea. These strings are usually made of raw silk. This study was carried out to investigate the optimum condition for silk string producing method using several kind of silk and setting temperature of silk string. If the ply of strings and twisting condition were same, tenacity and elongation of every silk strings were similar, in spite of silk strings prepared by physically different raw silk. On the other hand, in setting treatment of twisted string, it was disclosed that the proper setting temperature of silk strings were 11
for 20 min.
Mechanical Properties of Silk Gayageum Strings on the Twisting Conditions

The strings of Gayageum and Geomungo are usually made of raw silk. It needs good vibration as well as good durability to endure during play the Gayagum and Geomungo. This study was carried out to discuss some effects of twisting number of first and final twisting on the mechanical properties of silk Gayageum strings. Tenacity of strings were largely decreased proportionally with the increase of number of twisting of strings but elongation of strings were in the opposition direction. However, it was needed to hard twisting string for the good vibration. The proper S direction twisting velocity of moving twister during final twisting (Z direction) until three thread become one thread, was 40% of basic twister.
