Investigation of Habitat and Development of Indoor-rearing Condition of Peacock Butterfly, Inachis io(Linnaeus)

This study was conducted for investigation of habitat and development of indoor-rearing conditions of peacock butterfly, Inachis io (Linnaeus). Three different region, Mt. Kwangduk-san, Mt. Hae-san and Mt. Taebaek-san in Kangwon-do, was selected for investigation of domestic distribution and ecological environment of peacock butterfly. In result, there are many butterflies in the only two region, Mt. Kwangduk-san and Mt. Hae-san. On 16th April, 4 overwintered butterflies were observed in Mt. Hae-san. At the end of June and early in July, 51 individual next generation`s butterflies were observed in Mt. Kwangduk-san and Mt. Hae-san. For development of indoor-rearing conditions, collected each 15 male and female peacock butterflies was reared in a room condition. Female butterflies laid eggs in the egg cluster on the underside of host-plant`s leaves, Urtica angustifolia Fisch., in the ovipositioning room. We took 11 egg cluster with average
eggs. Hatchablity of eggs was 92.3%, and the eggs hatched within
days from the day of oviposition under high temperature, long day condition(
, 14L:10D). The larval period was

Pre-treatment conditions on the powder of Tenebrio molitor for using as a novel food ingredient

Although the mealworm larva (Tenebrio molitor) is high protein source, aversion feature of the larva made it difficult for consuming as a food. In this study, we established optimal powder manufacturing process for T. molitor larva for using as a novel food. For this purpose, it should be feed with the bran sterilized by water vapor for 3-5 days, starved without water or food for 3 days, and then the larvae were sterilized before freeze-drying. The sterilized T. molitor was lyophilzed and grinded by a blender. A safety of the powder as a food was validated by evaluation of Raw 264.7 macrophage cytotoxicity using MTS assay. As above results, we propose that optimal powder manufacturing process established in this study can be used in industrial production of T. molitor as a novel food.
Dissolution of Antheraea pernyi raw silk with calcium nitrate ethanol solution

Antheraea pernyi silkworm is one of typical wild silkworms, which spins a tawny color cocoon. The cocoon has been used as a resource for textile material due to strong chemical stability and good mechanical properties. In this study, to increase the solubility efficiency of A. pernyi silk fibroin, the composition of dissolution solvent were examined. Calcium chloride tertiary system, normally used for dissolution of Bombyx mori silk fibroin, does not act on A. pernyi silk fibroin. Calcium nitrate system dissolves A. pernyi silk fibroin, and calcium nitrate ethanol system do more easily than calcium nitrate system. Amino acid composition of A. pernyi silk fibroin obtained after dissolution is mainly composed of alanine, glycine, and serine. A. pernyi silk fibroin would be used for non-textile applications near future.
Quantitative Analysis of 1-deoxynojirimycin in Mulberry Leaves

Countries of the world are competing for the collection and utilization of genetic resources, which is a resource of value-added industrialization. We are building database of silkworm and mulberry resources with morphological, genetic characteristics data etc. Moreover, recent bioactive compound has been receiving increasing attention. So we analyzed 1-deoxynojirimycin(1-DNJ) content as a this item in addition to the basic information using 363 strains(varieties) of mulberry genetic resources. They were grown under the same environment and conditions. Mulberry leaves were collected and then freeze-dried and powdered for 1-DNJ test. As a result, 1-DNJ mean content of 363 mulberry strains was
, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was 43.5%. The variation between the strains was greatly severe. Among the tested strains, `C1D89/29` was showed the highest content of 0.47%, whereas `Pumbo 24` and `Turkey E` were showed the lowest content of 0.05% respectively. The content of 1-DNJ of 16 mulberry varieties for silkworm rearing were compared. Average concentration was
, and the coefficient of variation (CV) was 22.8%. Variation among cultivars was not significant. Finally we selected 1-DNJ high-containing 11 strains. They are as follows. `C1D89/29`, `Hiihak`, `Jeokasibmunja`, `Gweonchil`, `Botongsibmunja`, `Jeokchuk`, `bulguksang`, `Geunsookgojo`, `Busanggeum`, `Guksang 20` and `Taekwang` which are more than twice of the overall average content.
The Effect on Growth Performance of Chicken Meat in Broiler Chicks by Dietary Supplementation of Black Soldier Fly Larvae, Hermetia illucens (Diptera : Stratmyidae)

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of the black soldier fly (bsf) larvae on growth performance, carcass rate, and fatty acid profile of chicken meat in broiler chicks. Four hundred eighty 1-d-old broilers (Ross 308) were distributed into 3 treatments with 4 pens at 30 birds per replicate. Treatments were corn-soybean meal based broiler diet (control) and the basal diet replaced with bsf at the level of 3 and 6% respectively. Viability was not different significantly. Body weight gain was higher in control than other treatments. Feed intake was not statistically different of treatments. Feed conversion ratio was lower in control than other treatments. Relative weight of breast meat was significantly increased in all treated groups than in control. But, another relative weights of chicken meat cuts (thigh, wing, neck, back) were not significantly different among the groups. In conclusion, it could be suggested that dietary supplementation of black soldier flylarvae could beneficially improved the performance on broiler.
The effect of citric acid and enzyme inactivation treatment on C3G stability and antioxidant capacity of mulberry fruit alcoholic drink

To promote the consumption of mulberry fruit, we manufactured mulberry fruit wine with `simheung` by different processing methods and analyzed cyanidin-3-glucoside(C3G) stability and antioxidant capacity. In the processing of mulberry fruit alcoholic drink, 3 minutes blanching using microwave inhibited the C3G destruction by maintaining the antioxidant capacity and inactivation of enzymes related to pigment`s stability. And freeze-dried mulberry fruit was the highest C3G pigment content and antioxidant capacity. Nevertheless, this is not recommended because the economic burden of the cost of freeze-drying. In conclusion, when processing mulberry fruit wine, the addition of citric acid and the enzyme`s inactivation treatment were considered more effective than storage containers (transparent glass, brown glass bottles, aluminum foil, green glass, translucent glass bottles).
Development of functional cosmetic powder using silkgland powder of silkworm

In this study, silkgland powder of silkworm were investigated to see possibility for cosmetic powder materials. To test possibility as a baby powder cosmetics, total content rate of amino acids, DPPH free radical scavenging assay, MTT assay, and clinical trial were done. According to the result of the analysis of the amino acids of silkgland powder, serin (26.77%) content was the highest and asparatic acid (15.47%), and glycine (9.62%) were followed. DPPH free radical scavenging activity of silkgland powder was lower than vitamin C by 82.3% and 97%, respectively, which is relatively good. And the moisture and elasticity effect were increased in silkgland powder compared to control cosmetics by 210% and 185%, relatively. Thus, these results suggest that silkgland powder of silkworm may have beneficial properties as a material for cosmeceuticals.
Survey and analysis of mulberry tree for mulberry production

Though mulberry fruit is known to a by-product that was produced from mulberry tree after harvesting leaves for silkworm rearing, as a yield and consumption of mulberry fruit was increased, it has been fixing to a new income crop. But, a stable production of mulberry was issued on damage by the weather disaster, so it is requires that agricultural disaster insurance import. So, in this study as a basic research for a importation of agricultural disaster insurance, the cultivation of mulberry for produce mulberry fruit, the shape of tree, the number of a bearing fruit from each cultivar, the occurrence of mulberry fruit sclerotic disease, and a yield and the market price of mulberry fruits were investigated and that results obtained were as follows; The number of mulberry tree each 10a was abundant in Buan and Yangpyung region that cultivated a suitable cultivar on low cut shape, however, a large cultivated Gochang region was little. The number of a bearing fruit each the longest branch was abundant in the order of Gwasang No. 2, Suwonppong, Iksuppong, and Cheongilppong. Yield of mulberry fruit each 10a was abundant in the order of Cheongilppong, the second number of Gwasang No. 2, Suwonppong, Iksuppong, and yield of mulberry fruit each the age of three mulberry tree was abundant in older tree, however, the second number of Gwasang No. 2 was the opposite. Sale price of the mulberry fruit was highest in Gyeonggi Yangpyeong, and Jeonbuk Gochang was the opposite.
Characteristics of Mulberry Cultivar "Daejappong" (Morus Lhou(Ser.) Koidz.) for Mulberry Fruit Production

We bred new mulberry cultivar through local adaptability test, which was registered as a new cultivar for fruit production. Local adaptability test had been carried out at three places(Suwon, Chuncheon and Jinju) for four years since 2003. This is tetraploidy variety belonging to (Morus Lhou(Ser.) Koidz.) made by colchicine treatment on growing point of winter buds. Daejappong was high yielding in productivity by 3% compared to control cultivar "Chungilppong" for two years.The sugar contents of Daejappong was higher than that of control cultivar `Chungilppong(Morus alba L.)`. It is adaptable to every where except the places where cold damage and sclerotic disease happen frequently.
Breeding of WhangBoJama Sex-Limited Yellow Silk Silkworm Variety Suitable for Spring Rearing Season

A new silkworm variety "WhangBoJam" for spring rearing season is F1 hybrid between Jam317, a japanese strain bred from introduction breeding and Jam318, a chinese strain from introduction breeding. In the local adaptability test performed at 8 local areas in spring of 2012, the hatchability rate of WhangBoJam was recorded 95% similar to Kum HwangJam. The larval period was 8hours more long than KumHwangJam. The pupation percentage was recorded 6.6% higher than KumHwangJam. Single cocoon weight was recorded 2.29 g similar to KumHwangJam and cocoon yield(21.3 kg) was higher than KumHwangJam. The concentration of DNJ was measured to 0.22% in WhangBoJam, lower than DaePoongJam(0.26%). In the Paecilomyces tenuipes production ability test, the pupal weight of Whang BoJam was 1.33 g/individual, higher than KumHwangJam (1.19 g/individual).
Preparation and characterization of medical silk sponge

Fibroin and sericin are natural proteins obtained from cocoon and one of the spotlight materials for medical device. Medical device made of these proteins also has the advantage that this material is biodegradable in to amino acid. In this study, we prepared silk sponges using fibroin, sericin and additives. The characterizations of the silk sponges such as morphology, stability, and blood absorbency were observed. The structural stability of the silk sponge decreased significantly by increasing sericin contents. The effect on the concentrations of ethanol to induce crystallization was observed to be superior to 70% ethanol. Structural stability of silk sponges containing additives was very lower than those not containing additives. The blood absorbency of the silk sponges was found to be excellent, regardless of the composition of sericin and fibroin. The resilient power of these sponges was also very good, in spite of the repeated soaking and drying. Therefore, we expect that the silk sponges can be used medical supplies such as plastic implants and hemostatic cotton.
Modification of the commercial silkworm eggs adequate for Bluemoon0silkworm transgenesis

Silkworm transgenesis scientists have done some genetic modification work on multivoltine silkworms, but that type of silkworms is less commercial feasible. They are easy to manipulate, because they breed all year round. But the commercial silkworm variety must undergo hydrochloric acid treatment at a high temperature to be artificially hatched. Hydrochloric acid penetrates through the holes in the silkworm eggs, fatally damaging their reproduction. So it had been thought that altering the properties of the commercial silkworm variety would be very difficult. So we have tried to make from diapause to non-diapause eggs using diapauses varieties, `Backokjam` and `Jam 124`. At present, our group has establishing the conditions for non-diapause eggs. Oviposited eggs after 40 ~ 60 hours were incubated for 24 hours at
with dark condition. Non-diapause eggs were completely induced. The hatching rate, molting rate and pupation rate of non-diapause `Jam 124` and `Backokjam` eggs showed no differences compared to diapause eggs. When transgenic silkworm using the non-diapause eggs, the hatching rate showed that non-diapause eggs induced from diapause were 40 ~ 70%, diapause eggs treated with artificial incubation were 10 ~ 30%, and polyvoltine strains, HM eggs were 30 ~ 50%. Therefore, we suggest that modification techniques of the commercial silkworm eggs adequate for silkworm transgenesis can be used to develop transgenic silkworms more easily.
