A Study on the Characteristics of Dematerialized Expression in the Contemporary Architecture in Korea

Contemporary architecture is developing aspects of variety design in form and material. The various architectural trends even change classical materiality. This concept has the background of current idea - digital, information, imagination with paradigm. So this study aims to show the present status of the expressions in the contemporary architecture in Korea under its dematerialized situation. And like this, we know for study about the relation between dematerialization and current architecture, still more Korean present condition. In chapter one, the background, purpose and method of study are explained. In chapter two, this study inquires the general concept of dematerial. In the process of searching for the forming basic background this study understands the characteristic. In chapter three, this study inquires the aspect of dematerialized expression in modern architect. In chapter four, with characteristics drawn in chapter three, this study show the present status of the expressions in the contemporary architecture in Korea under its dematerialized situation. In chapter five, a synthetic conclusion is presented.
Development of Houses for Information Society through the Interpretation and Application of the Korean Traditional Houses

Until now, we have a great progress in computer hardwares and computer softwares. Many people think these days as the information time or information society. Even though, we make a great progress in the computer science, we can not regard this society as the information society, if we do not accept the development of computer in our real life. In order to provide desirable residential environment for the information - society, it is necessary to review previous housing projects from the Industrial - Revolution to these days. Thus this study deals with limits of modern housings. This research also suggests a new housing concept for the information - society by reinterpretation of the Korean traditional houses. Use of space in the Korean traditional houses was mostly interpreted by the concept of sexual discrimination from Confucianism. However it is suggested in this study, that An-Chae is a home space for providing privacy of family and Sarang - Chae is a social space for providing social activity. Thus it is found that the Korean traditional house has been used as office as well as home. In this view, it is suggested that Korean traditional houses be the prototype of future house as a business space and also as a home space. In this study, 3 types of housing for the information - society are suggested; flat type, tower type and skip floor type. these houses have two entrances independently for the home space and the social space. Therefore each space has no interference with each other. Then one can do his own at home efficiently. He does not have to go to his office in downtown. One can relieve traffic congestions in the city and reduce air contamination.
A Phenomenological Study on the concept of Daniel Libeskind's Architectural Space

The purpose of this study is to analyze the Daniel Libeskind' spatial concept in view of the Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology. After the coming of postmodern architecture, the concept of space ceased to be discussed between architects. Instead a sign and a form were supposed as much more important subject to define architectural discipline. But after 1980, the new concept of architectural space was experimented by the architects like Frank Gehry, Peter Eisenman, Steven Hall, and Bernard Tschumi, which was clearly distinguished from modern spatial concept. By the Daniel Libeskind' architecture, this study are to make clear this tendency. For this, we accept as an important instrument Meleau-Ponty's phenomenology and the spatial concept of Minimalism, which stress the relationship of inter-subjectivity between space and human body. Consequently, Daniel Libeskind' spatial concept is characterized by fragmental, accidental, heterogeneous space by accidental events which is occurred by movement of human, which was indentified with Merleau-Ponty's spatial concept.
A Study on the Ontological Apprehension of 'Tectonic' and Architectural Details in Carlo Scarpa's Architecture - focused on the way of thinking through Heidegger's existential phenomenology -

The recently published papers and essays regarding 'tectonic' bring us to rumination of its importance on comprehending modern architectural process. Many architectural theorists may seem to seek the substance of architecture through the discussion of 'tectonic' for the purpose of overcoming the dilemma of representation which can be easily found in modern architectural forms. Their emphasizing on its double-faced aspect as the manner of representation, that is semantic and aesthetic, may imply the significance of philosophical approach especially to the recent architectural phenomena. From this point, it ought to be meaningful to manifest etymological connection between the terms with semantic analysis and interpret the substance and ontological meaning of 'tectonic' referring Martin Heidegger's existential philosophy. Besides the works of Carlo Scarpa, that are known as the art of making, are exampled to prove the way how the ontological meaning of practical act is exposed on an artwork. The idea of 'tectonic' connotes not only technological aspect as construction of form and space, but also ontological aspect as joint or detail, that is the result of logos. The 'tectonic' means etymologically 'joint' having double-meaning structure, technology and aesthetics. It means 'detail' as minimum units of architectural form and as sites where making relationship or connection takes place in the way of ontological apprehension. The 'detail' as the place of innovation and invention implies the culture of an area, and expresses craftsmanship, which modem architecture buries in oblivion. This study aims to deviate from the aesthetical commercialization in which the modern architecture tends to fall, and further, propose the possible way to succeed traditional locality in an epistemological point of view.
Interpretation of the Nok-U-dang, Traditional Upper-Class Mansion in Haenam -with Dweller's Life and Agricultural Production-

This study has main purpose to understand and interpret the house Nok-U-dang, an upper class built in Chosun dynasty, not by outsider researcher's view but insider dweller's view. To interpret correctly, dweller's everyday life in the space and form is examined on a microscale beyond the physical space and form of the house, main object of architectural history To understand the present form exactly, the study restore traditional life in past era, 1940s. Main method of restoration is the ethnographic interview, based on cultural anthropology. Like any other upper-class house, the house has been influenced under ruling Confucian ideology in Chosun dynasty: separation of man's and woman's quarters and hierachical arrangement by generation, and worshipping ceremony for ancestor. However, it is by practical management for agricultural production that every court and building of the Noku-Dang can be explained correctly; preparing seed for sowing, tool storing, preparing and serving meal for laborers, making manure, harvesting, threshing grain, storing grain and so on. Precedent studies interpreted the house by the Confucian principle too much and made conclusion of dignity and austerity of ritual: woman's quarter, is closed and serene space. However this study shows that the space is semi-opened and composite space by agricultural works. And the Sarangchae, master's quarter, is located properly at visual center to control every agricultural activity.
