Chosun Mathematics in the early 18th century

After disastrous foreign invasions in 1592 and 1636, Chosun lost most of the traditional mathematical works and needed to revive its mathematics. The new calendar system, ShiXianLi(時憲曆, 1645), was brought into Chosun in the same year. In order to understand the system, Chosun imported books related to western mathematics. For the traditional mathematics, Kim Si Jin(金始振, 1618-1667) republished SuanXue QiMeng(算學啓蒙, 1299) in 1660. We discuss the works by two great mathematicians of early 18th century, Cho Tae Gu(趙泰耉, 1660-1723) and Hong Jung Ha(洪正夏, 1684-?) and then conclude that Cho's JuSeoGwanGyun(籌 書管見) and Hong's GuIlJib(九一集) became a real breakthrough for the second half of the history of Chosun mathematics.
Euler's Mathematical Theology

The interdisciplinary study explores the Euler's theology through his mathematical landmarks. From the mathematico-theological perspective, we first address Euler's theological backgrounds, and then show the implications of Euler's identity as his mathematical Christology.
History of ICM

The International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) will next be held in Seoul, Korea from August 13th to 21st 2014. The ICM, currently hosted by the International Mathematical Union, has a history spanning a period of one hundred years and is traditionally held every four years. Felix Klein has often been credited with formulating the concept of the ICM, however George Cantor not only initially propagated the idea of forming a mathematical society in Germany, but also proposed organizing an international mathematical union. This study has endeavored to investigate the early period of development of the ICM. Specifically, this paper has studied the development of early 20th century mathematics through changes in the formulaic language of the ICM, the number of participants, the number of presentations, the nationality of plenary speakers, and the changes in sessions.
A study of the mathematics education of Herbart

This article discusses and reviews the mathematics education of Herbart who had clarified the nature of the scientific education and established the systematic study of pedagogy for the first time. We are mainly investigated the "Pestalozzi's Idea of an ABC of Sense-Perception Investigated and Scientifically Carried out as a Cycle of Preliminary Exercise in the Application of Forms" that proposed intuitive geometric education that embodied his theory on education. Based on this, We discusses the educational implications-the purpose and methods of mathematics education and so on.
Design of Teaching Unit
Based on Lakatos' Perspective

In this study, a teaching unit
for mathematically gifted students is designed, based on Lakatos's perspective. First, students appreciated the exceptions of Desargue theorem and introduced the point at infinity to remove the exceptions. Finally students were guided to realize that the exceptions and the general case of Desargue theorem have equal status. Exploring Desargue theorem with other viewpoints, gifted students experienced the growth of mathematical knowledge due to exceptions of the theorem.
Comparison and Analysis among Mathematical Modeling, Mathematization, and Problem Solving

Nowadays, the big issues on mathematics education are mathematical modeling, mathematization, and problem solving. So, this paper looks about these issues. First, after 1990's, the researchers interested in mathematical model and mathematical modeling. So, this paper looks about mathematical model and mathematical modeling. Second, it looks about Freudenthal' mathematization after 1970's. And then, it compared with mathematical modeling. Also, it looks about that problem solving focused on mathematics education since 1980's. And it compared with mathematical modeling.
An analysis of test items from the viewpoint of the Mathematical knowledge for teaching

This paper aims to identify the area of knowledge required for constructing test items by comparing the consulting contents with the area of MKT(Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching). This paper collects the consulting results by the consulting group of A provincial office of education from 2007 to 2009, and analyzes and categorizes the results. The knowledge for constructing test items are known by the analysis on the consulting contents. Training and consulting for teachers are necessary to enable them to recognize the importance of these categories and improve the quality of test items.
