A Study on HOSEONGKONGSINLOK awarded to Kim Yang-bo, a eunuch
Shim Woo-choon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 17~33
This articles aims to analyze HOSEONGKONGSINLOK awarded to Kim Yang-bo, a eunuch, having major roles to take refuge the king Seon-jo when the Japanese invader rushed into Seoul in the time of Hideyoshi's Invasion of Korea in 1592. At that time, all meritorious retainer was to be rewarded equally by a given rules of the stipends and the gifts. But for the eunuch, differently from others, the portrait was not made to be handed down as a model. Instead one more clothes was given. This suggests that there were some differenciation of the class and the job in the evaluation of the merits. From this we can see that there might be some problems in the selection of the meritorious retainer, resulting in unfair awarding, and needing to be reevaluation from the historian. Even though somewhat worn out, this material has very important value as a historical source in terms of following viewpoint: 1) it contains all the name of the meritorious retainers at that time. 2) it suggests the social situation and affairs at that time more precisely. 3) it reveals the facts even some facts in the authentic records can be corrected.
Plan for Centesimal Classification (PCC)
Jeong Pil-Mo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 35~63
DDC, LCC, and CC can be said as the major schemes for mordern general library classification. Among these, DDC, since its publication in 1876, has been continuously studies and revised by many scholars and practitioners to publish 20th edition in 1989: LCC also has been studied and revised by the specialists in each subject, since 1904; and CC(first edition 1933) is now on the stage of 7th edition(1987). Even though studied, revised and developed by many classificationists, all these schemes maintain the general framework of the beginning, only with the partial revision and expansion to reflect the developments of the subjects. and antioipated tremendous amount of works resulted from reclassification also can be a reason that disturbs the full innovative revision of the scheme, because these are used in many libraries as a basic tools for the classification. But all these schemes mainly based on the state of the discipline at the time of their creation, the beginning of 20the century, and so in some aspect it is natural for them to have many problems. This study aims to investigate the problems in these major schemes, to find some ways to solve the problems, and to suggest the ideas for the basic design of a new modern library classification scheme. This plan is prepared to be applied to the situation of all countries equally without any revision. And in its notation, it uses two digits of Arabic numerals as centesimal, and so it is named provisionally to Plan for Centesimal Classification (PCC).
A Study of the History of Korean Public Library after the Korean Liberation Day - An Emphasis on the influence of public Libraries System under the Japanese Imperialism-
Kim Po Ok ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 65~125
The study has tried to analize and appraise how did public library system under the Japanese imperialism affect the establishment and managemant of Korean public libraries. To achieve the purpose of the above-mentioned study, the contents of
Japanese library statute
under Japanese imperialism and the current
Korean library law
have been mutually compared, at the same time, the vestiage of Japanese imperialism in view of the establishment, personnel administration and reading systems have been concretely investigated, analyzed and compared. The conclusions obtained from the above are as followings. 1. In those days of the Korean Liberation, the situation of Korean public libraries was such as it under the Japanese rule and so, their names were only changed. However, as a part of its independent activities, the national library have once carried out the various programs such as the training of professional librarians, the establishment of the new classification schedule and the chief Librarian and deputy Librarian from the professional librarians in the office regulations, and they were well worth being the good examples for today's Korean library circle. Though the Goverment of the Republic of Korea had been formally established, the situation of the library circle was very dull owing to the Korean war for a long time. In 1963,
The Korean library law
was promulgated, but the establishment of public libraries did not give satisfactory results because of the institutional fragility. In the 1980's the importance of library was embossed from the viewpoint of life-long education and the number of libraries was increased. However, there were still the remaining vestiges of Japanese library system in the practical library services. 2. After the Korean Liberation, the influnces of public library system under the Japanese imperialism showed in the office regulation of national library and the Korea library Law were also in the legal mechanism. In particular, the regulations of
The staff-member of public library
Admission fee of public library
including the chief librarian have referred to the library system under the Japanese imperialism since the liberation day to date. 3. At that time of the Korean Liberation, the U.S.Military Government Office had decided that the public library administration should be attached to the administration of local and internal affairs in accordance with the Japanese administative system. As a result, the public libraries had been forced to be indirectly affected by public library system under the Japanese imperialism for twenty years since the Liberation. 4. Since the Liberation, the personnel adminstration of public library has been so far on the steps of model under the Japanese imperialism. As the result of the field survey, the position standards of local chief librarians, non-professional character, the extra post system and the preponderant appointment of non-professional offices have analyzed by the influence of Public library system under the Japanese imperialism. Therefore, the Government authorities-concerned must readjust the standards of qualification and the divided duties corresponding to the position of public library staff members and to stipulate expressly in the revised library law. In addition, the regulation of the admission fee should be also actively detected for the free adminssion of library users. 5. Since the Liberation Day, the reading methods of public library have been so far similar to reading method under the Japaness imperialism. For example, the admission fee levied, the complicated procedures of using books including entrance and exit of a library, no-admission system, the limited lending books, the deposit system of outdoor lending books and the surety liable jointly and severally are originally caused by bureaucracy of under the Japanese imperialism. Therefore, the public libraries should make an offer space and opportunities which can enjoy freedom to the gull in future. The procedures and standards of library users will be simplified, if possible. As the above-mentioned, the actual conditions of Korean public libraries have been examined and analyzed. As the result of it, there are still the remaining vestiges of public library system under the Japanese imperialism in the establishment and management of the nation-wide public libraries. Such the remnants are an obstacle to the democratic development of public libraries and so, the authorities-concerned should take the proper-measures as soon as possible.
The Theory and the Practice of the Reclassification
Kim Myung-Ok ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 127~161
This study concerns with the reasons of the revision of the classification scheme and the kinds and methods of the reclassification. The reclassification IS to be implemented in case that classification numbers are wrongly given, or the scheme is revised, or it is wanted that presently using scheme should be changed to a different one. In the case of a revised edition, it is desired that reclassification is made based on the new edition because of the modernization of a data organization. However, in case of that it is not possible for the situations in the library such as the number of collections, staffs, facilities, budget, etc., the old edition can be based and the new one can be referred to. In this case, however, classification numbers may be dualized on one subject, and therefore, library must prepare the reference cards and the marks of the shelves for the different class numbers. Also, because much budget is required when the scheme is changed to another one due to its unsatisfactory usage, it should be carefully considered whether to change or not. The required time in reclassification for the relocated classification number of the revised edition is 18 minutes 54 seconds per volume, and its cost requires W 1,224.

Lee Woo Bum ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 163~222
This dissertation are studying the conceptual structure of decision making situation in libraries, by analyzing the library function, decision makings of library and then seeking economic and efficient alternative decision making by programming the· decision making situations, and finally, introducing how to apply management information system or decision making support system. For this purpose, in order to analyzing necessary factors for the decision making system, the questionnaire used Lickert method were distributed to 400 librarians of 36 universities in Seoul by means of mail. 193 librarians,
of the questionnaire, are returned are studied by using 'SYSTAT' statistical software to figure out the factors of the decision making system. This dissertation was put six hypotheses and tested with the returned questionnaire. The following five result can be asserted. First, to the higher degree of the librarians' participation in the important library decision makings, the quality of formal library services are improved regardless of seniority of the work. Secondly, the t-test results show that all of t-test scores of seniority of the work, educational background, and responsibilities of the work are exceeding significant level and perception of decision making was proved to be different depending on seniority of the work, educational background, and responsibilities of the work in libraries. Thirdly, as the results of factor af factor analysis, the encouragement on participation in the library academic activities, the extent to get useful information about performances of library and the improvements of library works were grouped by similar posibilities of distribution and therfore the academic activities, the collection of information and the improvement of library performances is proved to be interrelational each other. Fourthly, the fifth hypothesis of the close relationship between the decision making situation and types of advisor by it was more or less interrelational, but their relationship was not seen some significancies. Lastly, as the dynamic organization of library management forming a special commitee or a project team with librarian can improve the extent and quality of the librarian's participation in the decision making of library works, and thus library will become to performance more rational and effective library management.
Methodology of bibliography
Lee Hee-Jae ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 223~270
To give any science or discipline an assured status, the most important and fundamental thing is to establish the method of research. 'Bibliography' is an ambiguous and much-abused term in any area, oriental, anglo-american, or latin countries. This study is a little essay to examine the different theories of these three areas and to synthesize the common factors. It is devised three parts : the definition of the term itself and the transition of its concept, the introduction of each theory, and a proposition of methodology based on these theories. In all, bibliography is commonly understood to mean (i) a list of books and other graphic materials arranged according to some system, (ii) the study of books as material objects include historical and textual problems, (iii) as a science of books, the systematic study of all conditions of its production, diffusion, and utilisation, including the study of factors of explication of phenomenon, on the political, economical, technical, social and culturel plans.

The physical descriptions of these materials will accord with ISBD to prepare for comuterzing of that. This study presented the recording forms of physical description that fitted to peculiarity of the oriental traditional materials and it refered to ISBD of non-book materials that are special in the forms. These recording forms of that are as the follows; The first part is the recording forms of description and number of the parts of items. The second part is the recording forms of the other physical details. This part contains the Illustration, Kwankwak, Keseon, Hengjasu, Heucku, Eormee. The Third part is the dimensions of items. The dimensions of the oriental traditional books consist of two kind. One is the dimensions of actual printing. The other is that of a book cover. The fourth part is the recording forms of the accompany materials.

Kim Sang-Ho ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 331~403
1. The Purpose of the Research Historical study on the early woodblock printing in Korea has been mostly focussed on woodblock-printed books. Whereas, researches on those who pioneered to develop the advanced culture of the times have been very scant. Meanwhile, extant temple woodblock publications contain well preserved descriptions about Monk-Engravers and Sextons together with respective colophons at the end of the books. These records are very important research materials in the study of woodblock printing history and are also very useful source materials for discernment in conducting historical research about woodblock-printed books. Based on these records, this research has revelaed the characteristics of the Engrevers and realities of engraving activities, and by doing this, has clarified the characteristics of temple woodblock publications, and discussed the historical research about the woodblock-printed-publications by means of the Engravers. 2. Research Methods Temple woodblock publications with colophons in the nation's major libraries have been directly investigated and 3,059 Engravers were identified in 510 different woodblock-printed books, based on which this research and analysis have been conducted. 3. Research Results As a result of the research the followings have been clarified. A The Engravers' status composition and the motivation of engraving. B. The realities and tendencies of the Engravers' activities. C. The characteristics of the times found in the Engravers' lists. D. Historical research methods through the names of the Engravers.

A Study on the Descriptive Cataloging Rules of Looseleaf Publications - Focussed on CRLP2 Analysis-
Yun Hee-Ynn ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 20, 1991, Pages 437~472
Looseleaf publications are truly a unique type of library material, partaking simultaneously of the nature of serials and monographs. Therefors, two disparate methods of cataloging looseleaf publications coexist today. But the decision to catalog looseleaf publications as serials as monographs affects the acquisition, budget allocation, receipt, record maintenance, and user access. In view of these aspects, this study analyzed the sources of information and seven areas of description (title and statement of responsibility ; edition ; publication, distribution, etc. ; physical description; series ; note ; standard number and terms of availability) of CRDLP2 as the exclusive cataloging rules of looseleaf publications. The results of the analysis were summarized in chapter 4 in detail. Finally, it is desirable that looseleaf publications for updationg are cataloged as monographs since the bibliographic description applied to looseleaf publications follows so colosely that of monographs. And, the cataloger must pay partioular attention to describe the physical description area because of numerous changes of the bibliographic records accompanied by frequent revisions or updates of the publications.
