A Study on the Language and Literature Division of the Dewey Decimal Classification
Nam Tae Woo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 1~60
In this study, Two divisions(language and literature) in schemes of the DDC are discussed. And the adaptation of these divisions to the minor or oriential countries are seggested. In spite of the continuous study and revision of the experts, the frameworks of these systems are still kept unchanged. Only their subdivisions, reflecting those developments In the academic world are developed and detailed more sophisticatedly. Of those subdivisions in DDC, especially the two subdivisions of language and literature are seriously unbalanced. The two divisions give the attention too much to the Western including the English, Deutsch and French. Relatively the languages and literatures of the other nations are treated lightly. It results more problems to the Oriental and the minor nations. So, the libraries of these nations should modify the schedules and develop the subdivisions items of the local emphasis. Considering these problems the historical changes of the DDC system in the languages and literatures are clarified and the problems occurring from unbalanced allocation of the classed items are examined.
A Study on the Choice of Main Entry in German Cataloging Rules; a comparison with the title entry in the Orient
Kim Tae-soo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 61~101
This study reviews the development and change of main entry principle in German cataloging codes, with special emphasis on RAK. With rerard to the functions of catalog, comparison between the traditional title main entry in the Orient and author main entry in the West has been made. The analysis confirms in this study that various criteria in choice of the entries in RAK have been adopted. In case of works where the persons who have played different roles in the works are named on the title page, as well as related works and works of mixed responsibility, the criteria of entry determination are complex and time consuming process and have no absolute value. And there are also various kinds of problems in corporate entries including confirmation of originator(Urheber), choice of either the territorial authority corncerned or corporate bodies as an entry depending on the nature of the publications, and a unique bibliographical situation of treaties. This means the code is absence of absolute value in selecting entries, and this results in adoption of main entry principle which has lost its significance for the purpose of cataloging. With emergence of the ISBD and actualization of automated cataloging, morever, all entries are equal as points of access. It would eliminate the need for personal judgements required in choice of main entry by the present code. In doing so, it would bring uniformity and standardization to cataloging practice. In direct approach to works, title entry is more developed finding device than author entry in cataloging theories. Thus introduction of unit card system beginning with title which is adopted in KCR3 would be desirable, the complicated rules for the choice of entry could be abandoned from cataloging codes. Most of the user studies show that catalog users have placed higher value on the title entry as a finding device and each entry is equal as access points through unit entry. This means that choice of a given entry as a main entry is unnecessary in cataloging codes. Title entry would be a rather simple standard and direct approach for works. This study proves that the traditional title entry of Korea is superior to author main entry in the Western world in cataloging theory. Thus recommendation to be made is that abandonment of author main entry from cataloging codes should be considered in the future.
A Study on the Factors Affecting Career Patterns of Korean Female Librarians
Choi Eun Ju ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 103~140
Knowledge about career patterns of women In any profession and about factors which influence these career patterns becomes increasingly necessary because of the influx of ever-increasing numbers of women into the labor force, and the need for the development and utilization of the creative productivity of women. This study alms to investigate Korean female librarians' overall career patterns and verify relevant factors which might affect to their career patterns. As an instrument, self-reported questionnaires were sent to 1,251 full-time Korean female librarians throughout the country with regular librarian's certificate, currently engaging in public, college or university, and special libraries. Based on the data gathered, the interrelationship between their career pattern inclination and its influential factors were examined through hypothesis testing. Major findings of the survey are outlined in the following: 1). Female librarians' career patterns were classified into five categories with the group represented as Categories-2 (single; wishes to continue working after marriage; places an emphasis on the sense of occupational accomplishment and social prestige) accounted for the highest proportion
. 2). The result of the hypothesis testing revealed that there is no significant relationship statistically between social factors(parents' socio-economic status, etc.) and female librarians' career patterns. So the hypothesis concerning social factors were rejected. 3). In psychological factors(job satisfaction ; self-concept sex role attitude ; role conflict ; and achievement motivation), all except for self-concept were shown to be relevant with female librarians' stable career pattern. So the hypotheses concerning psychological factors were supported. 4). According to the result of multiple discriminant analysis conducted between the above four statistically significant psychological factors and career patterns, the most influential factor for female librarians' career patterns was job satisfaction and sex role. In conclusion, the following recommendations were made: For overall enhancement of Korean female librarianship, earlier career guidance and concrete sex role education for young women is urgent which enable them to establish correct viewpoint for their occupational career female librarians themselves' constant endeavor In maintaining positive attitude toward their job is required.
A Study on the Reference Evaluation Applying Conjoint Analysis of the Marketing Research
Bae Soon Ja ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 141~168
The Purpose of this study is to explore and analyse ways of enhancing the effectiveness of reference service through reference evaluation. Marketing research technique combined with pre-evaluation theory was applied in this study to find out information for practice the service based on current concept of reference service. Aims and results of this study can be summarised as follows: First, the evaluation of effectiveness of reference service should be conducted for the purpose of finding out the ways of increasing user's satisfaction. Second, the policy evaluation was understood as the appropriated evaluation concept. The policy evaluation in principle coincides with reference service in sense that the satisfaction of public should have priority and hence be the criterion of the evaluation. Third, marketing research based on recently developed 'marketing concept', which concentrates all its efforts to meet user's demand and attempt to acquire the information for better marketing management of non-profit organization such as library, is examined to find out the evaluation method practically applicable to the pre-evaluation of reference service. In this study , conjoint analysis was adopted as the method of pre-evaluation about reference service. The Reference Room of the Central Library Yonsei University, was selected as the arget sample to find out the expected condition for the maximization of the user's satisfaction from the reference service. Based on this example study, the analysis indicates as the most desirable combination for reference service in terms of the user's satisfaction is following condition: the younger librarian with aimable personality who displays willingness In his/her assistance, plus as the method of reference service, sufficient and practical introduction to the reference materials available, plus immediate and satisfactory result of the service, and finally a library equipped with inter-library use system.
A Study on the Efficient Use of Database and the Office Information System
Ko Young-Man ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 169~190
The purpose of this study is to investigate aspects of office information systems in japanese corporations in order to understand introduction strategies and to find out whether strategy elements could be transferred to Germany. In this study, three points of view played an important role. (a) Technological and infrastructural support systems What kind of role did the liberalization of telecommunication markets and the avaliability of computer hardware play to help develope of database industry and implement office information systems? (b) Strategies and forms of the implementation of office information system: Which strategies were successful, distribution or centralization? How were technical and organizational problems handled? (c) Process of data communication : How did the implementation of office information system change the data communication with in-house or commercial database systems? To answer these questions, this study centered around a two-step field research in Japan. (1) Screening stage: to gain a general overview of office information system in Japan. The results of this initial research have been analysed and carefully evaluated to prepare for the second and major part of field research in Japan. (2) Data collection stage: interviews with respective managers, heads offices, and data processing units in 20 enterprises. The major results of this study are as follows. Today in Japan, office information system is understood as the interconnection of the in-house and commercial database for the maximization of the use of information resource In an organization. In particular, developments in the direction of distributed systems and the 'intelligent office' by means of the new information and communication technologies are very important.
Library and Information Science Education for Information Profession
Kwon Eun Kyung ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 191~223
Needs of our society for information professional have been changed continuously. The purpose of this paper is to study a direction of Library and information Science(LIS) education which can response properly the change. For this purpose, 1) the characteristics of information socitey, the demand to information profession, and the qualification required by the emerging job market of information professionals are examined. 2) the identity of LIS and its educational achievement for information professionals are considered. 3) Information Resources Management (IRM) which in some sense shares the common goal of effective information transfer with LIS is also considered. 4) the similarities and the differences between the two are discussed to seek their interrelationship and cooperation possibiity. While there are differences in focus and practice between LIS and IRM, interdisciplinary partnership between these two can enhance theory and practice of each other's area. Particulary, LIS school can take advantage for their students to penetrate the emerging job market as well-rounded information professionals.
The Development of The Information Retrieval System By The Scientific Communication Network
Jeong Jun Min ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 225~248
The paper suggests newly conceptualized information retrieval system on the notion of citation analysis. The paper also criticizes the traditional information retrieval techniques using Boolean logic. The underlying assumption of this paper is that any pair of papers cited by one paper could be strongly related each other in meaning (Co-citation Analysis). And also any two papers to share same references could be similar each other (Bibliographic Coupling), By using graph algorithm, the networks of two kinds of the papers (the citing group, the cited group) is made in the fields of the genetics and the information and library science. The results say that the maps or networks for cited and citing groups can be useful when applied to the paper set made by the broad searching by subjects or keywords.
An Experimental Study on Fuzzy Document Retrieval System
Lee Seung Chai ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 21, 1991, Pages 249~290
Theoretical developments in the information retrieval have offered a number of alternatives to traditional Boolean retrieval. Probability theory and fuzzy set theory have played prominent roles here. Fuzzy set theory is an attempt to generalize traditional set theory by permitting partial membership in a set and this means recognizing different degrees to which a document can match a request. In this study, an experimentation of a document retrieval system using the fuzzy relation matrix of the keywords is described and the results are offered. The queries composed of keywords and Boolean operaters AND, OR, NOT were processed in the retrieval method, and the method was implemented on the PC of 32bit level (30 MHz) in an experimental system. The measurement of the recall ratio and precision ratio verified the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy relation matrix of keywords and retrieval method. Compared to traditional crisp method in the same document database, the recall ratio increased
high although the precision ratio decreased slightly. The problems, in this experiment, to be resolved are first, the design of the automatic data input and fuzzy indexing modules, through which the system . can have the ability of competition and usefulness. Second, devising a systematic procedure for assigning fuzzy weights to keywords in documents and in queries.
