A Study on the MARC Format for Authorities
Oh Dong-Geun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 30, issue 1, 1996, Pages 3~18
This article analyzes the record structure, content designation, and the content of UNIMARC, USMARC, and KORMARC formats for authorities, through the comparative investigation, Structure and content designation are almost same with those of the bibliographic formats, being based on those of ISO 2709. The data fields of USMARC and KORMARC are divided into blocks based on the traditional authority card formats, and those of UNIMARC are divided into functional blocks based on the GARE. Record contents of the formers in the fixed-length fields include more elements on the selectioa status and scope of the heading, and those related to the series. And those of the later include more elements for the international exchange. Based on the analysis of the variable fields, it is recommended that KORMARC should include an additional subfield, say
for the processing of the Hanja(Chinese character) data and add the separate classification fields for series.

Retrieval Effectiveness of the Two Indexing Systems in the Water Resources : A Qualitative Analysis
Lee Myeong-Hee ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 30, issue 1, 1996, Pages 49~67
The previous study showed a large variation in performance within the queries and suggested that characteristics of queries cotribute to retrieval performance. Three attributes, specificity, complexity and recency were used to analyze the different results within queries. The result showed that subject searching retrieve more relevant documents for a Query with low specificity than a query with high specificity and that queries from the doctoral students' dissertations were specific queries with high specificity.
A Study of the Sulmunhaejaikjing
Kim Soon-Hee ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 30, issue 1, 1996, Pages 69~88
This dissertation evaluate3 the Sulmunhaejaikjing, published in 1912, by Sun-Soo Park, an ideographic scholar of the late on Korean Chosun Dynasty. This study first explores the compilation, structure andmethodology of the Chinese written characters in Sulmunhaejaikjing. Second, it studies the Sulmunhaejaikjing's distinctive features by means of a comparison with some works of Sulmunhak of the Chung Period in China. Since the motivation of writing of his work was to correct the errors of Sulmunhaeja, Sun-Soo Park attempted several independent interpretations. The interpretive stucture of Sulmunhaejaikjing exactly follows the 14 Books and 540 Parts of Sulmunhaeja, but Park's work differs in interpretation methodology and content Huh Shin made Sojun characters the subject of the investigation, Sun-Soo Park corrected Huh Shin's errors by making the Pre-Sojun older Chinese characters the object of his investigation. Sulmunhaejaju by Tan Ok-Jae, the most distinguished work of spoken literature in the Chung period, adopted Huh Shin's interpretation and added notes, sothat. Tan Ok-Jae, like Huh Shit did not take into account the Pre-Sojun old Chinese character. Therefore, Sun-Soo Park's interpretation greatly differ from Tan Ok-Jae's. Among the scholars of Sulmunhak in the Chung Dynasty, it is Oh Dae-Jing, the writer of Sulmunhaejubo, that accomplished the most noticeable achievement in Sulmunhaeja, Oh Dae-Jing aimed to collect all the Chinese characters which were confirmable in the interpretation of Sulmunhaeja. This, Oh Dae-Jing in a nut neglected the independent interpretation of characters. Sun Soo Park however, demonstrated a pregressive character in basing his independent interpretation upon reliable resesources, even though he offered fewer character in number than did Oh Dae-Jing.

Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 30, issue 1, 1996, Pages 89~123
The world has moved from the Cold War between the east and the west and moved toward the age without idealogy. It places emphasis on economic benefit and welfare of its own nation as its main point With this world trend, in order to sam the competitiveness and the reconciliation of the divided nation the north and the south Korea should be united. Once the north and the south are united, information society will be altered with the huge flow of the civilization. At the same time, the issue of how to operate library policies and system, in which effective acquisition, manipulation, accumulation, and dissemination of information un would be very important. From this point of view, the following conclusions are obtained in this study. Firstly, when building a national library preparing for the national unification. it is essential to introduce 1) the concept of policy and system for information society and 2) that of policy and system which has national-culture as its focus. Secondly, it is essential to prepare the cooperative-structure between libraries prior to the national unification. This kind of cooperation should gradually expand to an extent that allows actual benefits such as building union catalog, inter-library loan system, resource sharing, standardized cataloging rules, and exchange of dissertation... etc. Thirdly, developing the library policies and systems for the national unification must be based on the concept of the mutual cooperation as inter-dependent model rather than on the concept of the incorporation-absorption as a dominant model. The next point the principles of the followings in preparing the library policies should be considered: 1) free-competition, 2) revolution of consciousness through the social education, 3) independence and love for humanity, 4) scientific or reasonable thinking, 5) job responsibility, 6) democratic citizenship, 7) mind far collective life, 8) spirit of public interest 9) globalization In addition, the model of the library systems preparing for thenational unification should include the followings : 1) uniformity of library system and its authority, 2) establishment of research institutes for library policy and system, 3) exchange of library establishment and information resources, 4) building library networks, 5) establishment of education systems for the library and information science and enhancement of its quality, 6) modernizing and developing information technology and its transfer. Finally, the libraries in the north and the south has different concepts, goals, information resources, and the different ways of using them. Considering the practical aspects of the libraries and the reasons for their existence, they must structure the mutual cooperative system so as to minimize the shock when confronting the social changes, so-called the national unification.
