A Study on the Use of Science Citation Index (SCI) and Awareness of SCI Source Journals by Faculty Members at Korean Medical Colleges
Lee Choon-Shil ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 1, 1997, Pages 29~52
A questionnaire survey was conducted to investigate the use of SCI and awareness of SCI source journals by fatuity members at Korean medical colleges. 104 out of 180 faculty members randomly chosen from four prestigious medical colleges returned the questionnaires malled to them. Korean medical researchers rarely used SCI as their main source of research Information. They rather used the MEDLINE to seek the research information probably because they are easily available from their local libraries. Furthermore. many respondents mistakenly Identified 'SCI journals ranked by Impact factor' lists found In Journal Citation Reports (JCR) with the SCI Itself. That Is. In Korean medical research community. the virtue of SCI Is not as an Index but as a source of SCI Journal Impact factor Information. It Is because the Interest in impact factor Is highly associated with the pressure to publish In one of those SCI source Journals. The collected data shows that even the medical professors at these prestigious medical colleges suffer from the lack of knowledge and information about SCI. SCI source journals and their Impact factors. Nontheless, core journal titles of a medical specialty selected by Korean medical professors are mostly high-Impact Journals of Its field (1.e.. belong to the upper 1/3) zone ranked by Impact factor). Within each specialty. the Journal ranks assigned to the selected core Journals by the respondents agree with the ranks by SCI Impact factor to a great extent. That Is. the Korean medical scientists awareness on SCI Journals as defined in this study is in good standing. Therefore. a policy of a medical college to require medical professors to publish In SCI Journals to be promoted or a policy to evaluate a researcher's work by the fact that his research papers are published In SCI Journals can be positively pursued.

The purpose of this study is to Investigate the factors haying an Influence on activating the Interlibrary loan between national university libraries. Data were collected by
and questionnaires. To analyze the factors activating the Interlibrary loan, 1-test and regression analysis method Is adopted depending on the type of data collected. The findings of the study shows that the interlibrary loan can be more actively performed in the group of libraries to focus the subject background on library and Information science than the other group the number of lending cases is highly affected by collection size. the number of periodical titles, annually increased number of collections and periodical titles. Otherwise the number of borrowing cases is much less affected than the number of lending cases by the above factors : the interlibrary loan can be more actively conducted in the group of libraries using facsimile or PC than the other group.

Chung Young-Mee ; Kim Seong-Eun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 1, 1997, Pages 153~184
The importance of WWW search services is increasing as Internet information resources explode. An evaluation of current 9 search services was first conducted by comparing descriptively the features concerning indexing, searching, and ranking of search results. Secondly, a couple of search queries were used to evaluate search performance of those services by the measures of retrieval effectiveness. the degree of overlap in searching sites, and the degree of similarity between services. In this experiment, Alta Vista, HotBot and Open Text Index showed better results for the retrieval effectiveness. The level of similarity among the 9 search services was extremely low.

Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 1, 1997, Pages 231~256
The purpose of this study is (1) to ascertain the common trends In establishing the branch library of university libraries in Korea and (2) to Investigate Into Its effect upon the use of university libraries as a whole. In order to achieve this purpose. this study focused on the relationship of branch libraries with the size of library collections. the number of students, history of universities, the number of academic departments, the space of main libraries and the budget of the libraries. Seventy-three branch libraries established within the twenty-six university libraries were chosen for the first purpose of this study. In order to achieve this second purpose. 6 university libraries are chosen two libraries with six branch libraries. two libraries with three branch libraries. and two libraries without a branch library The number of visitors were counted at the doors of the six libraries at indifferent time periods.
