An Analysis of the Class 'Philosophy' in tile 4th Revised and Enlarged Edition of KDC
Park Ok-Wha ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 7~22
Korean Library Association brought out the fourth revised and enlarged edition of KDC last year. Compared with the former edition It Is a marked improvement. Neverthless, it leaves much room for improvement. In order to examine and evaluate the edition more effectively, I confined my study to the class 'Philosophy'. In my judgment the problem resolves itself into following three points: 1) Each regions, blanches of philosophy is not properly balanced. As is generally known KDC was originally derived from DDC. As a result KDC and DBC are similiar with regard to their stress on the philosophical tradition of the West. In consequence, it is lacking in universality. 2) The classifiers neglected on several occassions the logical regulations of classification. The vertical and horizontal relations between the subjects are not strictly respected. 3) The persons concerned were not well informed of philosophical conceptions and genealogies. There are some misused conceptions and disorganized genealogies of philosophy. To my knowledge these problems originate in the lack of professional understanding of philosophy necessary to make the work satisfactory As a result of the examination I came to the conclusion that it is inevitable for the classifiers, to ask to specialists in philosophy for mutual cooperation. Without their professional advices the classifiers will find difficulty in solving the problems and in improving the classification
Research Strategies for Problems of School Library in Its Present Developmental Stage
Kim Jung-Gun ; Kim Jong-Sung ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 23~51
The Writers explain why we have to talk about school library now, who will be the central forces to talk about school library, and finally how the talk about school library will be formulated. The writers' emphasis is on themes to be chosen, research methods, and writing styles on the part of researchers.
Status of Document Delivery, Interlibrary Loan Services and Use of Information Technology in Korean Special Libraries
Rieh Hae-young ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 53~73
To find out the status of document delivery and interlibrary loan services and the use of information technology in special libraries, questionnaires were sent to 328 special Libraries nation wide with at least 1 librarian, listed In the Korean Libraries Statistics 1994-1995(1996).
were returned and 152 Questionnaires were analyzed. For document delivery,
use KINITI. 87 libararies
participate In interlibrary loan activities. To send requests, FAX and telephone is used the most, while FAX and print copy is used the most to receive the requested documents.
use various information technology including online databases, Internet, e-mail, etc., and the use of information technology was related to the budget of the libraries. The costs, budgets, and slowness was the problems raised by the most. To improve the document delivery services, the most urgent thing is establishing cooperative system using BBS or Internet. Network systems to facilitate interlibrary loan should be established ultimately.
A Study on the Performances of Korean WWW Search Tools
Lee Lan-Ju ; Choi Kyung-Hwa ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 75~108
The purpose of the article is to help users to select appropriate Korean WWW search tools and to retrieve Web documents for their information needs by using them effectively. It analyzes the characteristics, functions, and advantages and disadvatages of each search tool, while search tools are divided broadly by two categories-subject directory services (Kor-seek, DIR, ZIP, Netquest21, Simmany) and keyword search engines (Simmany, Kachine, Jungbotamjung, Anysearch, Unifinder, Webglider, Missdachanni). It provides the selection criteria of search tools for users who have information needs. In addition, the study also attempts to contribute to the improvements in designing Korean WWW search tools, as investigating their shortcomings.
Methods for Quality Control and Evaluation in the Scientific and Technical Bibliographic Databases
Lee Jae-Whoan ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 109~134
This study discusses the quality issue of large scientific and technical (S&T) bibliographic databases in South Korea. In details, this study develops the criteria to evaluate the quality of S&T bibliographic databases, evaluates the quality of the selected two databases - UN10N DB and SATURN DB of the KORDIC, and finally, suggests both organizational and technical methods for the quality improvement of such bibliographic databases.
Improving Retrieval Effectiveness with Multiple Query Combination
Lee Kyi-Ho ; Lee Joon-Ho ; Lee Kyu-Chul ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 135~146
Different users or the same user using controlled versus free-text vocabularies could generate different queries for the same information need. It has been known in the information retrieval literature that different query representations may retrieve different sets of documents. In this paper, we first generate multiple query vectors from a given information problem by using different relevance feedback methods. Then, we combine the multiple query vectors into a single query vector. We also show through experiments that significant improvements can be achieved by the combination of the multiple query vectors.
The Extention of Professional Job of Librarian According to Library Automation: Systems Librarian
Kweon Kie-Won ; Bang Jun-Pil ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 147~164
The purpose of library automation is to enhance the library function by the computer. Systems Librarian Is the person who manages the automation systems, appeared with the presence of library automation. He/she has the professional knowlege of library and information science, experience of library services and computer technology, The purpose of this study is to introduce the role, characteristics, details of job, nature about systems librarian and to sugest how to educate them. It is important to support systems librarian and to study on them for the purpose of promoting library automation.
A Study on the Searching Behavior of OPAC Users
Sakong Bok-Hee ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 165~208
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of user interface that affect the searching behavior of OPAC users. and then to propose how to design user-friendly interfaces of OPACS. An experiment was conducted on two systems with different interfaces to grasp the effect of user interface to search process and search outcome. A
cross-over design was used for the experiment. Sixty five searchers participated in the experiment. Several statistical techniques such as carry-over effect and system effect of a
test, t- test, McNemar test, test of marginal homogeneity through maximum likelihood method, factor analysis, regression analysis, and analysis of variance were applied according to the hypotheses tested and the data analyzed.
A Study of Information Searching Behaviors Caused by Time pressure of Researchers
Hong Ki-Churl ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 31, issue 3, 1997, Pages 209~237
The main purpose of this study is to find the difference of information searching behaviours consist of information pursuit cognition and searching character by time pressure of researchers. The majar findings and result by time pressure of researchers are summarized as follows : In terms of information retrieval systems, according to the time pressure, there is a significant difference in recall, precision and diversity. In terms of main used material, there is a significant difference in a book, a research report, and a Journal. In terms of resource types, there is a significant difference in both record and human resource. Also, in terms of searching behaviours, there is a difference to spend time for information collection and information searching strategy, and to decide information searching method and degree of searching.
