A Study of the Classification of Korean Music Materials
Hahn Kyung-Shin ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 5~34
The purpose of this study is to develop an idealistic scheme for the classification of Korean music. The ideal classification of Korean music should cover as much knowledge and materials of Korean music as possible. The conditions and the possibility of developing an ideal classification schedule of Korean music were sought through reanalyzing the problems found in these existing classification schedules. As the result of this study a new classification schedule of Korean music was proposed.

A Study of the Changing Library Environment and its Preparation in Digital Age
Han Sang-Wan ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 97~120
Library takes its way to digitalization to fill its role in modern information society. This study discusses social environment of this trend and investigates library circumstances, and refines the meaning of a library. A digital library is led by current stream of new media, rapid development of digital technology and recording methods, and revolution of information circulation and production such as electronic publishing. However, rich information sources in printed forms are even significant as a ground of a digital library. The digital library is not a brand-new feature of a library but the result of digitalization of information resources to accomplish the purpose of the library.
Online Information Technologies and the Changing Roles of Reference Librarians
Noh Ock-Soon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 121~142
Based on the comprehensive literature search and the sample library surveys, some observations are made on the impact of online information technologies for reference services. Various issues specifically with OPAC, CD-ROM, remote database access, and internet environment are overviewed as the source of and trigger for change in reference librarianship and in terms of expectations as well as difficulties. The paper then focuses on how these technologies influence on the roles of reference librarians as intermediaries in information providing, instructing, consulting, and evaluating functions. This leads to rethinking the conceptual basis of today's reference service and the competencies for reference librarians with new functions and responsibilities.
A Study on the Economies of Administration Scale in University Libraries
Yoon Hee-Yoon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 143~167
This study is to evaluate whether economies of scale exist in four categories of university libraries in the Korea. Regression analysis is used to fit a log-log equation to the total budget-output (total circulation, interlibrary lending and borrowing, reference transactions, hours opened, volumes added, automation and information indicator) for all the types of libraries. In results of the analysis, returns to scale are almost constant in the national and public libraries and larger libraries. But there is presence of economics of scale in private libraries and all of the libraries. Except for hours opened, economies of scale decrease more rapidly.
A Study of Image Attributes for Image Database
Kwak Chul-Wan ; Lee Eun-Chul ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 169~187
The purpose of the study is to identify what terms are used, how they are categorized, and what they are related each others to search image files. Data collection was conducted through 5 photographies using 22 participants. The study shows that used terms were affected by image contents and size, and pre-iconography, iconology, time, geographical location, and relationship were important for image attributes.
A Study of the Behavioral Characteristics of the Primary and Secondary Searches on Online Databases
Noh Dong-Jo ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 189~209
The purpose of this study is to verify the difference of behavioral characteristics between the primary and secondary search, the influence of the primary search results on Online databases. Data is collected by surveying the professional and end-user searchers in 33 online information service centers. 262 valid responses out of 308 questionaire are analyzed by the t-test, ANOVA,
using SAS program. The major findings are as follows : (1) Preparatory searches(the levels of expectation, the degree of question comprehension), search results(the number of output documents, precision ratio, recall ratio, degree of satisfaction) are significantly different between the primary and secondary searches on Online Databases. But the number of search terms, Boolean logics, files, systems, relevant documents are not significantly different between the primary and secondary searches. (2) The results of the primary search affect the secondary searches. The number of output documents in the primary search affect the modification of search strategies and objects in the secondary searches. The number of relevant documents affect the variation of search scopes in the secondary searches. The precision ratio affect the change of search strategies and scopes in the secondary searches.

A Study on the Use of School Library for Open Education
Han Yoon-Ok ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 233~257

For these purposes, a spatial relationship of school library and the process of cooperative program planning and teaching is investigated with a case study. Cooperative program planning and teaching is a school library service program which has to be developed as an instructional program related to classroom teaching. However the tendency is that teacher-librarians are not active to do it in the open education system.

A Digital Library Prototype for Access to Diverse Collections
Choi Won-Tae ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 2, 1998, Pages 295~307
This article is an overview of the digital library project, indicating what roles Koreas diverse digital collections may play. Our digital library prototype has simple architecture, consisting of digital repositories, filters, indexing and searching, and clients. Digital repositories include various types of materials and databases. The role of filters is to recognize a format of a document collection and mark the structural components of each of its documents. We are using a database management system (ORACLE and ConText) supporting user-defined functions and access methods that allows us to easily incorporate new object analysis, structuring, and indexing technology into a repository. Clients can be considered browsers or viewers designed for different document data types, such as image, audio, video, SGML, PDF, and KORMARC. The combination of navigational tools supports a variety of approaches to identifying collections and browsing or searching for individual items. The search interface was implemented using HTML forms and the World Wide Web's CGI mechanism.
