A Problems in Korean MARC on Disc
Chung Ok-Kyung ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 3, 1998, Pages 81~96
This paper studied on problems and improvement method of description and headings in
. By Korean MARC on Disc, it seems a great mistake that in abridged and full information, give the volumes next to statement of title and author. and even input copies of them respectively in case of multi-volume books. Also, frequently the essential abridged catalog information of a homonymic authors more than 10 which are written to Chinese are enumerated under one author name in Korean, using together with only one list. It is, therefore, effective and reasonable that Korean author headings be written to Korean language at first and be followed by Chinese, and then the subject of an author and the year of birth and death of author be indecated. For that, We should make out a conventional and reasonable subject heading list in advance to maintain the unity of subject, and build a exact authority database of Korean author name according to it.

A Comparative Measure of the Reliance on Domestic Journals Among Korean Researchers in Each Discipline
Bae Soon-Ja ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 3, 1998, Pages 127~142
This study is a comparative analysis of the usage level of domestic academic journals in each discipline. The purpose of this study is that the results from this analysis can be used as basic data for evaluating domestic journals which is being done in every university. I atopted citation analysis as research methods target to dissertation and core journal in each discipline. From this analysis I got some results that can be applied as a tool for evaluating journals. First, there is distindtive difference in degree of reliance on the domestic journals, therefore we have to prepare different check points for each discipline. Second, if high rank journal can't take rule power under
, we must prepare another pertinent check points to evaluate journals efficiently.
Constructing a Metadata Database to Enhance Internet Retrieval of Educational Materials
Oh Sam-Gyun ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 3, 1998, Pages 143~156
This paper reports the GEM (Gateway to Educational Materials) project whose goal is to develop an operational framework to provide the K-12 teachers in the world with 'one-stop/any-stop' access to thousands of lesson plans, curriculum units and other Internet-based educational resources. To the IS-element Dublin Core base package, the GEM project added an 8-element, domain-specific GEM package. The GEM project employed the conceptual data modeling approach to designing the GEM database, used the Sybase relational database management system (RDBMS) to construct the backend database for storing the metadata of educational resources, and also employed the active server page (ASP) technology to provide Web interfaces to that database. The consortium members catalog lesson plans and other Internet-based educational resources using a cataloging module program that produces HTML meta tags. A harvest program collects these meta tags across the Internet and outputs an ASCII file that conforms to the standard agreed by the consortium members. A parser program processes this file to enter meta tags automatically into appropriate relational tables in the Sybase database. The conceptual/logical schemas of Dublin Core and GEM profile are presented. The advantages of conceptual modeling approach to manage metadata are discussed. A prototype system that provides access to the GEM metadata is available at http://lis.skku.ac.kr/gem/.

Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 3, 1998, Pages 157~177
The 21st century will be the advanced Information society era. The management of very large quantity of electronic documents is important because new applications such as Digital Libraries, CSCW (Computer-Supported Cooperative Work) in Intranet, CALS (Commerce At the Light Speed) are emerging, which require the functionalities of efficient storing, searching and managing a bulk of electronic documents. SGML(Standard Generalized Markup Language) is an ISO Standard for representing structure information of electronic documents. This paper proposes an effective data model for storing and managing SGML documents. We also describe the design and implementation details of SGML document management system, which has capabilities of storing SGML instances, generating schema dynamically, and retrieving structure elements efficiently.

Analysis and Design for the System of Korean Web Document Classification
Nam Young-Joon ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 3, 1998, Pages 207~230
Because of a rapid increase of information available through web site, a user often falls into confusion of which web sites should be visited for his information needs. If a web site search engine can classify web sites according to their subject or topics, it can help the user to determine which web sites are worth accessing and thus to easily acquire relevant information. In this study, I propose new classifying system with a two level hierarchy and 57 items.

The purposes of this study are (1) to develop a user-based concepts to measuring the quality of library service (2) to introduce a user-based service quality model and SERVQUAL instrument from service marketing areas and (3) to assess applicability of this model and instrument to libraries and information centers. The concluding section suggests several considerations for implementation of their applicability and future research.
A Primary Study on Building the Secondary Legal Information Full-Text Databases
Kweon Kie-Won ; Roh Jeong-Ran ;
Journal of the Korean Society for Library and Information Science, volume 32, issue 3, 1998, Pages 281~296
This study indicates that it is necessary to have characteristic information the information experts recognize-that is to say, experimental and inherent knowledge only human being can have built-in into the system rather than to approach the information system by the linguistic, statistic or structuralistic way, and it can be more essential and intelligent information system. As this study proves that the cited primary legal information within the secondary legal information functions as the index which represents the contents of the text because of the characteristics of legal information, the automatic indexing in the secondary legal full-text databases can be possible without the assitance of the experts. In case of the establishment, amendment or repealing of law, change of index terms can be possible through revising the legal text cited in the secondary legal information full-text databases. Even when we don't input the full-text about retrospective documents, automatic indexing is also possible, and the establishment and the practice of expert knowledge and integrated databases are possible in case of the retrospective documents.
