Data Model, Query Language, and Indexing Scheme for Structured Video Documents
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 1~17
Video information is an important component of multimedia systems such as Digital Library, World-Wide Web (WWW), and Video-On-Demand (VOD) service system. Video information has hierarchical document structure inherently, so it is named "structure video document" in this paper. This paper proposes a data model, a query language, and an indexing scheme for structured video documents in order to store, retrieve, and share video documents efficiently. In representing structured video documents, the object-oriented data modeling technique is used since the hierarchical structure information can be modeled as complex objects. We also define object types for the structure information. Our query language supports not only content-based retrieval, which means the queries based on the structure of video documents, and spatial/temporal relation for video documents. In order to perform structure queries efficiently, as well as to reduce the storage overhead of indices, an optimized inverted index structure is proposed.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 18~25
The basic requirements of distributed multimedia systems are intramedia synchronization which asks the strict delay and jitter for the check period of media buffer and the scaling duration with periodic continuous media such as audio and video media, and intermedia synchronization that needs the constraint for relative time relations among them when several media are presented in parallel. In this paper, a distributed intermedia synchronization algorithm that solves the intermedia synchronization problem by using variable service rates based on the fuzzy logic is designed and then the performance is evaluated through simulation.
3D Shape Reconstruction of Non-Lambertian Surface
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 26~36
It is very important study field in computer vision 'How we obtain 3D information from 2D image'. For this purpose, we must know position of camera, direction of light source, and surface reflectance property before we take the image, which are intrinsic information of the object in the scene. Among them, surface reflectance property presents very important clues. Most previous researches assume that objects have only Lambertian reflectance, but many real world objects have Non-Lambertian reflectance property. In this paper the new method for analyzing the properties of surface reflectance and reconstructing the shape of object through estimation of reflectance parameters is proposed. We have interest in Non-Lambertian reflectance surface that has specular reflection and diffuse reflection which can be explained by Torrance-Sparrow model. Photometric matching method proposed in this paper is robust method because it match reference image and object image considering the neighbor brightness distribution. Also in this thesis, the neural network based shaped reconstruction method is proposed, which can be performed in the absence of reflectance information. When brightness obtained by each light is inputted, neural network is trained by surface normal and can determine the surface shape of object.
A Service Strategy of Binary Document Images based on JBIG in Digital Library
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 37~44
While the SGML(standard generalized markup language) tend to be used in multimedia document management systems, still binary document images are widely used in servicing the information of printed documents at digital libraries. But the printed documents are scanned in 200 dpi resolution and the scanned binary document images are compressed by the ITU-T T.6 method, so they have difficulties in representing them in good quality and compressing them very efficiently. In this paper, by considering quality of the binary document images and expandability and effectiveness of database of them, we show that the suitable scanning resolution of them is 600 dpi and the best compression method is the JBIG. A staged service strategy of them is also suggested to solve the difficulty caused from long decompression time of the JBIG by analyzing characteristics of retrieving the binary document images in monitor and printer. In experiments for several typical binary document images, high compression rate of the JBIG and effectiveness of the staged service strategy are verified.
The Implementation of a PC GUI for a Multimedia Tele-Medical System based on ATM / B-ISDN
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 45~55
In the tele-medical system, the broadband network for multimedia telecommunication and the multimedia terminal equipment for the remote access of the tele-medical information are essential. Especially, the tele-medical terminal equipment should provide the multimedia GUI environment in order to support the similar medical process by the tele-medical system. In this paper, we present a multimedia GUI (Graphic User Interface) for a Multimedia Tele-Medical System (TeleMedi_GUI) based on ATM/B-ISDN. In the tele-medical system, one workstation is used for the multimedia data server that is supporting multiple client terminals that are connected by the ATM network. The client terminals are based on Multimedia Personal Computers, and provide the remote access environment of the tele-medical database. We also developed the remote access protocols among the clients and the server to access multimedia medical information of the multimedia server. With using the TeleMedi_GUI, the doctors can examine and treat patients efficiently, using image data like X-ray/CT and voice data such as the S-ray diagnosis. The result of this paper can be applied to the following areas: 1) the implementation of the advanced medical service system interconnecting the small-scale health center and general hospitals, 2) the development of a fully computerized medical information system within the hospital.
A Study on Electronic Contract Systems Using Digital Multisignature
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 56~65
The multignature system is a digital contract system which can process multi-party contracts electronically. In this paper, we analyzed various insecure elements involved in general multisignature contract systems and suggest requirements needed for making such systems secure. Based on our analysis, we propose a new secure multisignature method and apply it to the conventional electronic digital contract systems along with several other existing multisignature methods. The applicability and the effectiveness of the newly developed method are demonstrated by comparing how well the suggested security requirements are satisfied by each method.
Design and Analysis of a Transmission Rate Control Algorithm for Client's Buffer on VOD Systems
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 67~79
In this paper, we present the design and analyze the transmission rate of a control algorithm for the client buffer on the VOD systems. The design is based on the server's data transmission rate and clients' data consumption rate. The proposed algorithm stabilizes the client's buffer by reducing the oscillation phenomena of the buffer. And it uses the BCT (Buffer Check Time) to reduce the scheduling load of the client system. The client's data consumption rate and the buffer size are calculated on the basis of BCT. In case that the predicted buffer size operates in the overrun or starvation the buffer. As the load fluctuation of the network, the transmission rate control policy cannot stabilize the client's buffer alone. The media scaling policy, therefore, also performs its complementary part in stabilizing the client's buffer, and performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm is provided through simulation.
An Extension of Visual Cryptography and Its Application into Digital Watermark
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 80~89
In this paper, we consider the method which a secret information is distributed in hard-copied image using visual cryptography that the secret can be identifying simply by human eyes. If slides constructed by patterning, which is one of dithering method, are considered from the viewpoint of visual cryptography, each slides will maintain the shape of original image because these slides have different Hamming weights. Therefore, this method has the advantage that information distributed into slides by stacking them can decode and the shape about the original image can be keeping as well. In this paper, we propose the method which shares the secret information into multiple original images by extension of ONM (Oka-Nakamura-Matsui) method which is devised to embed a secret information on hard-copied image. As a result, this proposed method is applicable to digital watermark because the copyright of image can be identified by stacking an image of owner for verification and the distributed multiple images.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 90~97
In this paper, we propose a new variable length block cipher. It has a variable key length from 128-bit to 256-bit and uses a variable number of rounds. In each round, the proposed algorithm uses the double involution structure which consists of tow steps and two different F functions. In addition, the proposed algorithm has two different key schedulings for providing the strength against known attacks.
A Design & Implementation of Remote Access Function for A Multimedia Database of The Tele-medical System Based on ATM/B-ISDN
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 98~108
In the multimedia tele-medical system the medical informations are stored and managed in multimedia database. Also, multimedia DBMS is essential in order to manage large scale medical informations, and the remote access function is necessary for the distributed processing at all around the hospital. For the multimedia tele-medical information that is composed of image/picture, data, video, and audio, a high-speed telecommunication network is necessary that can provide separated connections for each medical information type with different QoS. The commercial DBMSs are based on the TCP/IP socket API(Application Programming Interface) that does not provide multiple QoS. Also, each commercial DBMS has its own API that is incompatible with other DBMS. In this paper, we propose a multimedia DBMS agent for the remote access of the multimedia database in the tele-medical system. The proposed multimedia DBMS agent is based on the ATM API that can provide high-speed data transfer capability and multiple QoS connections. Also, the proposed multimedia DBMS agent is independent of the commercial DBMS. We explain the functional architecture of the multimedia DBMS agent, implementation technology on the ATM network environment, and the result of performance analysis.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 109~119
This paper describes a research result on automatic generation of Abstract Test Suite from INAP protocol in formal specifications by applying many existing related algorithms such as Rural Chinese Postman Tour and UIO sequence concepts. We use the I/O FSM generated from SDL specifications and a characterizing sequence concepts. We use the I/O FSM generated from SDL specifications and a characterizing sequence, called UIO sequence, is defined for the I/O FSM. The UIO sequence is combined with the concept of Rural Chinese Postman tour to obtain an optimal test sequence. It also proposes an estimation methodology of the fault courage for the Test Suite obtained by our method and their translation into the standardized test notation TTCN.
The Design and Evaluation of Mobile Multicasting Protocol in 3-Tiered Mobile Computing Environment
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 1, issue 1, 1998, Pages 120~129
The mobile computing is a new network environment that support s wireless network connection seamless while the portable computer is moving. This environment involves the problem of re-establishing of new network connection. The mobile computing should provide multicasting service, because multicasting is widely-used application service which delivers messages to the members of the groups. In this paper, we proposed 3-tiered mobile multicasting protocol that transfers multicast packets efficiently and reliablely. Also, we analyzed the performance of 3-tiered mobile multicasting protocol comparing with other mechanism. Our protocol is superior to other mechanism in the aspects of the handoff costs and packet delivery costs.
