Web Image Clustering with Text Features and Measuring its Efficiency
Cho, Soo-Sun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 699~706
This article is an approach to improving the clustering of Web images by using high-level semantic features from text information relevant to Web images as well as low-level visual features of image itself. These high-level text features can be obtained from image URLs and file names, page titles, hyperlinks, and surrounding text. As a clustering algorithm, a self-organizing map (SOM) proposed by Kohonen is used. To evaluate the clustering efficiencies of SOMs, we propose a simple but effective measure indicating the accumulativeness of same class images and the perplexities of class distributions. Our approach is to advance the existing measures through defining and using new measures accumulativeness on the most superior clustering node and concentricity to evaluate clustering efficiencies of SOMs. The experimental results show that the high-level text features are more useful in SOM-based Web image clustering.

The need for content-based retrieval from visual media, such as image and video data, is ever increasing rapidly in many applications, such as electronic art museums, internet shopping malls, internet search engines, and medical information systems. In our previous research, we proposed an architecture, called the HERMES, which is a Web Service-enabled visual media retrieval framework. In this paper, we propose the Web Service workflows that are employed in the HERMES. We describe how we designed the workflows for service registration and query processing in the framework. We especially explain how metadata and ontology can be utilized to realize more intelligent content-based retrieval on visual media data.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 716~725
In this paper we describe a motion tracking algorithm for 3D human animation using stereo vision system. This allows us to extract the motion data of the end effectors of human body by following the movement through segmentation process in HIS or RGB color model, and then blob analysis is used to detect robust shape. When two hands or two foots are crossed at any position and become disjointed, an adaptive algorithm is presented to recognize whether it is left or right one. And the real motion is the 3-D coordinate motion. A mono image data is a data of 2D coordinate. This data doesn't acquire distance from a camera. By stereo vision like human vision, we can acquire a data of 3D motion such as left, right motion from bottom and distance of objects from camera. This requests a depth value including x axis and y axis coordinate in mono image for transforming 3D coordinate. This depth value(z axis) is calculated by disparity of stereo vision by using only end-effectors of images. The position of the inner joints is calculated and 3D character can be visualized using inverse kinematics.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 726~736
In this paper, real-time image scanning system using linescan cameras is designed. The system is specially designed to diagnose and analyse the conditions of tunnels such as crack widths through the captured images. The system consists of two major parts, the image acquisition system and the image merging system. To save scanned image data into storage media in real-time, the image acquisition system has been designed with two different control and management modules. The control modules are in charge of controlling the hardware device and the management modules handle system resources so that the scanned images are safely saved to the magnetic storage devices. The system can be mounted to various kinds of vehicles. After taking images, the image merging system generates extended images by combining saved images. Several tests are conducted in laboratory as well as in the field. In the laboratory simulation, both systems are tested several times and upgraded. In the field-testing, the image acquisition system is mounted to a specially designed vehicle and images of the interior surface of the tunnel are captured. The system is successfully tested in a real tunnel with a vehicle at the speed of 20 km/h. The captured images of the tunnel condition including cracks are vivid enough for an expert to diagnose the state of the tunnel using images instead of seeing through his/her eyes.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 737~744
This paper proposes the blind watermarking algorithm for digital video based on magnitude modulus subband in wavelet transform domain. After transforming each of frames into wavelet domain, the proposed algorithm divides LH, HL, and HH subbands of 2-level into
blocks and calculates average magnitude modulus of all blocks. Then the watermark bit is embedded into a target magnitude modulus comparing with an average magnitude modulus within a block. Experimental results were confirmed that the proposed algorithm has the good robustness against MPEG and frame attacks than the conventional algorithm.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 745~753
The wireless medium is known to be time-varying which could affect and result to a poor network's performance. As a solution, an opportunistic scheduling and power control algorithm based on IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol is proposed in this paper. The algorithm opportunistically exploits the channel condition for better network performance. Convex optimization problems were also formulated i.e. the overall transmission power of the system is minimized and the "net-utility" of he system is maximized. We have proven that an optimal transmission power vector may exist, satisfying the maximum power and SINR constraints at all receivers, thereby minimizing overall transmission power and maximizing net-utility of the system.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 754~759
Methodology of ontology building based on Web resources will not only reduce significantly the ontology construction period, but also enhance the quality of the ontology. Remarkable progress has been achieved in this regard, but they encounter similar difficulties, such as the Web data extraction and knowledge acquisition. This paper researches on the characteristics of ontology construction data, including dynamics, largeness, variation and openness and other features, and the fundamental issue of ontology construction - formalized representation method. Then, the key technologies used in and the difficulties with ontology construction are summarized. A software Model-OntoMaker (Ontology Maker) is designed. The model is innovative in two regards: (1) the improvement of generality: the meta learning machine will dynamically pick appropriate ontology learning methodologies for data of different domains, thus optimizing the results; (2) the merged processing of (semi-) structural and non-structural data. In addition, as known to all wetland researchers, information sharing is vital to wetland exploitation and protection, while wetland ontology construction is the basic task for information sharing. OntoMaker constructs the wetland ontologies, and the model in this work can also be referred to other environmental domains.

Que, Ma. Victoria ; Hwang, Won-Joo ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 760~769
In this paper, we consider a group mobility model to formulate a clustering mechanism called Dual Coalescent Energy-Efficient Algorithm (DCEE) which is scalable, distributed and energy-efficient for wireless mesh network. The differences of the network nodes will be distinguished to exploit heterogeneity of the network. Furthermore, a topology control, that is, adjusting the transmission range to further reduce power consumption will be integrated with the cluster formation to improve network lifetime and connectivity. Along with network lifetime and power consumption, clusterhead changes will be measured as a performance metric to evaluate the. effectiveness and robustness of the algorithm.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 770~778
Fish schooling or group moving in cyber underwater is a part of beautiful and familiar ecosystem. It is not so easy to present the behavior of fish crowd naturally as a computer animation. Thanks to development of computer graphics in entertainment industry, the numbers of digital films and animations is increased and the scenes of numerous crowd are shown to us. Though there are many studies on the techniques to process the behavior of crowd effectively and the developments of crowd behavioral systems, there is not enough study on the development for an efficient crowd behavioral simulator. In this' paper, we smartly present the types offish behavior in cyber underwater and make up for the weak points of time and cost. We develop the fish schooling behavior simulator for the contents of cyber underwater, automating fish behavioral types realistically and efficiently.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 6, 2007, Pages 786~798
As we go about our daily lives, people often collect surrounding information and adapt to the situation. Computer development trends show that one wants computers to work like human beings, i.e. computers can sense its context and adapt corresponding to context changes. To implement this expectation, a context aware service layer is needed. In this layer, sensors capture its environment and send this information to the service center. Considering received information as its context, the service center seeks the suitable operation according to the context. Tills paper presents a context aware service which is applied in controlling air-conditioner. The air-conditioner includes sensors which are installed at some special positions in a room. Each of these sensors gathers comfort-influenced information like temperature, humidity and sends them to air-conditioner. The air-conditioner adapts its operation to the environment according to the sensed information. To control the air-conditioner effectively, we use a genetic algorithm which is suitable in adaptation issues. The simulation shows that the room condition can be maintained at a comfortable level by using context-aware services in the operation of the air-conditioning system.
