MD-TIX: Multidimensional Type Inheritance Indexing for Efficient Execution of XML Queries
Lee, Jong-Hak ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1093~1105
This paper presents a multidimensional type inheritance indexing technique (MD-TIX) for XML databases. We use a multidimensional file organization as the index structure. In conventional XML database indexing techniques using one-dimensional index structures, they do not efficiently handle complex queries involving both nested elements and type inheritance hierarchies. We extend a two-dimensional type hierarchy indexing technique(2D-THI) for indexing the nested elements of XML databases. 2D-THI is an indexing scheme that deals with the problem of clustering elements in a two-dimensional domain space consisting of the key value domain and the type identifier domain for indexing a simple element in a type hierarchy. In our extended scheme, we handle the clustering of the index entries in a multidimensional domain space consisting of a key value domain and multiple type identifier domains that include one type identifier domain per type hierarchy on a path expression. This scheme efficiently supports queries that involve search conditions on the nested element represented by an extended path expression. An extended path expression is a path expression in which every type hierarchy on a path can be substituted by an individual type or a subtype hierarchy.
Design of a Personalized Web Mining System Using a Sequence Association Rule

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1106~1116
Recently e-commerce trade on the web has grown rapidly in scale and complexity, just as web site designs and web servers have become more complicated. In view of these complexities, it is obviously difficult to analyse web user's data since they web users employ so many different web paths. The existing association rule investigation algorithms identify all items with a high correlation. However even though users often only want to find items in which they have interest, it is still difficult to find the rules they want out of all of the many association rules found by existing algorithms. In this paper, we propose a system linking each node with the sequence association rule, linking all routes after finding a path corresponding to a user with the association rule-one of the data mining techniques which identify user patterns in web user paths. The suggested system helps us construct individualized or customer-subdivided sites using the sequence association rule in order to harmonize the paths of web users with user characters.

In this paper, an algorithm that can define the threshold value automatically proposed in order to detect a brain ventricle in MRI brain images. After the wavelet transform, edge sharpness, which means the average magnitude of detail signals on the contour of the object, was computed by using the magnitude of horizontal and vertical detail signals. The contours of a brain ventricle were detected by increasing the threshold value repeatedly and computing edge sharpness. When the edge sharpness became maximal, the optimal threshold was determined, and the detection of a brain ventricle was accomplished finally. In this paper, we compared the proposed algorithm with the geodesic active contour model numerically and verified the efficiency of the proposed algorithm by applying real MRI brain images.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1125~1134
In this paper, we propose a new approach for rotation invariant texture classification based on Gabor wavelet. Conventional methods have the low correct classification rate in large texture database. In our proposed method, we define two feature groups which are the global feature vector and the local feature matrix. The feature groups are output of Gabor wavelet filtering. By using the feature groups, we defined an improved discriminant and obtained high classification rates of large texture database in the experiments. From spectrum symmetry of texture images, the number of test times were reduced nearly 50%. Consequently, the correct classification rate is improved with
values in 112 Brodatz texture class, which may vary according to comparison methods.
Hand Detection for Front-Projected Interactive Displays
Nam, Yang-Hee ; Oh, Su-Jin ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1135~1142
Front-projection type displays make it difficult to apply traditional skin color detection for human hand because the projected beam not only reaches to the screen but also to the user's hand. This paper solves this problem by modeling the distortion between original image and its final camera input. Our approach improves hand detection rate by modeling of interference effect among color channels and of intra-frame intensity and also by introducing adaptive threshold for color difference in skin region.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1143~1152
The objective of this paper is to develop the real time motion recognition method for the rehabilitation program of the people with physical disabilities. Using the infrared ray LED, this method gets the Teal time information of the user's motion and tells the difference between the information we get and the pre-defined information. In order to get the fast recognition and comparison, this method positions the specific coordinates of infrared ray LED in the pre-classified sector which keeps certain distance and angle from the point of origin. The result In our experiment shows the speed over 20 frames per second in every motion, and we are satisfied the rate for the recognition of the motions which is near 98%.
Resource Management System for Multimedia Service in Wireless Mobile Networks
Lee, Won-Yeoul ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1153~1164
One of the most challenging technical issues in mobile communication for multimedia is Quality of Service (QoS) management of handover calls. This paper proposes a 2-level handover control system to copy with this problem. A 2-level handover control system consists of resource reservation and call admission control modules. The resource reservation module divides the network resource into Hard and Soft reserved resource. The Hard reserved resource is only for the handover calls while the Soft reserved resource is for both the handovers and the new calls. And also, the resource reservation module classifies handovers into primary and secondary handovers based on often they occur. The call admission control module deals with the primary and secondary handover calls in different ways. The new calls can use Soft reserved resource only if there is sufficient amount available in the Hard reserved resource. Proposed system is evaluated using an M/M/c/c queueing model. It is shown that proposed system allows more efficient utilization of network resource without degrading QoS comparing with the legacy handover control systems.
On Alternative Path Setup for Directional Antenna Based Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
Tscha, Yeong-Hwan ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1165~1174
Mobile ad hoc networks suffer from the re-construction of the routing path as a node on the path moves away and/or fails. In this paper we propose a multipath routing scheme, designed for the network based on the directional antennas, in which a new path is quickly recovered by do-touring to an alternative neighbor called braid. Simulations are conducted in random networks with 50 nodes uniformly deployed in a
area where, all nodes have a transmission range of 250m and the average node moving speed varies from 0 to 10m/s. The proposed approach under the ideal antenna with K(>1) directional sectors achieves better results compared with the case of K=1, the omnidirectional antenna model, in terms of the metrics: packet delivery ratio and average number of hops for the routing paths. As further study, a scheme to alleviate the heavy amount of latency accompanied by the rout setup is urgently required.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1175~1184
Brick toys, once regarded as one of the most basic formative equipments, have succeeded in increasing user base and more experiments have been made to link with a variety of areas in a creative way. However, previous studies on brick were limited to its role as a tool of play and education, which resulted in relatively less number of studies on endless possibility and variability. In this regard, this study examined what made bricks evolve in the unique and advanced form and how it has developed in detail. This study presented information on the basis of theories regarding fundamental features and characteristics of brick and analyzes actual cases in a systematic way. Finally, VR design based on 3D-brick system was implemented.

Ham, Hyung-Bum ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1185~1196
To enhance competitiveness of game industry and added value, it needs scientific research and bases that suggest satisfaction standard which quantitatively evaluates satisfaction to develop games which have high satisfaction for demanders. Specially, scoring of satisfaction factors and estimation of population distribution are important task. This allows which a game have high or low satisfaction compared to other games. Also we predict improvable factors and technical aspects to promote satisfaction. For it, in this paper we discuss ways to normalization of score distribution for satisfaction factors and estimate its density function using parametric density estimation by simulation.

These days, most of SMART card, JAVA card, picked up the JAVA Card Platform gets the position as a standard. Java Card technology provides implantation, platform portability and high security function to SMART Card. Compared to normal Smart Card, JAVA card has a defect that is a low running speed caused by a distinctive feature of JAVA programming language. Factors that affect JAVA Card execution speed are the method how to save the data and install the applets of JAVA Card installation instrument. In this paper, I will offer the plan to improve JAVA Card program's loading and execution speed. At Java Card program, writing, updating and deleting process for data at EEPROM can be improved of Java Card speed by using high speed RAM. For this, at JAVA Card as a application of RAM, I will present prefetching LRU-ORL Buffer Cache Technique that is suitable for Java Card environment. As a data character, managing all data created from JAVA Curd at Buffer Cache, decrease times of recording at maximum for EEPROM so that JAVA Card program upload and execution speed will be improved.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1209~1219
It is difficult to run 3D graphics based application on the embedded system with hardware constraints. Therefore, such a system must have a systematic infrastructure which can process various operations with respect to 3D graphics through any graphic acceleration module. In this paper, we present a method to implement 3D graphics acceleration device driver on Tiny X platform which provide an open source graphics windowing environment. The proposed method is to initialize the driver step by step so that the direct rendering infrastructure can use it properly. Moreover, we evaluated overall 3D graphics performance of an implemented driver through a simple but effective benchmark program.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 10, issue 9, 2007, Pages 1220~1228
This paper presents a new system for online signature verification, approaching for finding gaps between a point-to-point matching and a segment-to-segment matching. Each matching algorithm has been separately used in previous studies. Various features with respect to each matching algorithm have been extracted for solving two-class classification problem. We combined advantages of the two algorithms to implement an efficient system for online signature verification. In the proposed method, extreme feints are used to extract writer-dependent features. In addition, using the writer-dependent features proves to be more adaptive than using writer-independent features in terms of efficiency of classification and verification in this paper.
