Path Combining System of XML Documents based on Relational DBMS
Lee, Bum-Suk ; Hwang, Byung-Yeon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 415~422
With the increasing use of XML, considerable research is being conducted on the XML document management systems for more efficient storage and searching of XML documents. Depending on the base systems, these researches can be classified into object-oriented DBMS (OODBMS) and relational DBMS (RDBMS). OODBMS-based systems are better suited to reflect the structure of XML-documents than RDBMS based ones. However, using an XML parser to map the contents of documents to relational tables is a better way to construct a stable and effective XML document management system. The proposed X-Binder system uses an RDBMS-based inverted index; this guarantees high searching speed but wastes considerable storage space. To avoid this, the proposed system incorporates a path combining module agent that combines paths with sibling relations, and stores them in a single row. Performance evaluation revealed that the proposed system reduces storage wastage and search time.
3D Face Recognition in the Multiple-Contour Line Area Using Fuzzy Integral
Lee, Yeung-Hak ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 423~433
The surface curvatures extracted from the face contain the most important personal facial information. In particular, the face shape using the depth information represents personal features in detail. In this paper, we develop a method for recognizing the range face images by combining the multiple face regions using fuzzy integral. For the proposed approach, the first step tries to find the nose tip that has a protrusion shape on the face from the extracted face area and has to take into consideration of the orientated frontal posture to normalize. Multiple areas are extracted by the depth threshold values from reference point, nose tip. And then, we calculate the curvature features: principal curvature, gaussian curvature, and mean curvature for each region. The second step of approach concerns the application of eigenface and Linear Discriminant Analysis(LDA) method to reduce the dimension and classify. In the last step, the aggregation of the individual classifiers using the fuzzy integral is explained for each region. In the experimental results, using the depth threshold value 40 (DT40) show the highest recognition rate among the regions, and the maximum curvature achieves 98% recognition rate, incase of fuzzy integral.
Aperture Correction using Distance-Dependent Backprojection for SPECT Images
Lee, Nam-Yong ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 434~442
The parallel beam SPECT acquires projection data by using parallel hole collimators in conjunction with photon detectors. Those projection data of the parallel beam SPECT are, however, contaminated by the distance dependent blurring because of the inaccuracy of the point response function of the collimator that is used to define the range of directions where photons can be detected. Thus an efficient aperture correction is required. In this paper we propose a distance dependent backprojection method to overcome the time limitation of iterative aperture correction methods and the performance limitation of Fourier-Distance Relation based method. The proposed method achieves aperture correction and fast image reconstruction by replacing the distance independent backprojection of the direct image reconstruction with the distance dependent one. We conducted several simulations to compare the performance of the proposed method with that of the conventional Fourier-Distance Relation based method. The simulation result shows that the proposed method outperforms the Fourier-Distance Relation based method in spatial resolution and robustness against noise.
An Image Watermarking Scheme by Image Fusion in the Wavelet Domain
Kim, Dong-Hyun ; Choi, In-Ha ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 443~453
In this paper, the 1-level DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) coefficients of a binary logo image are used as the watermark. The watermark should be inserted in the same band which is equivalent to the host image when the watermark is inserted in the wavelet domain. This is the image fusion of the proposed watermarking method. The watermark is inserted in relatively significant coefficients after the insertion area is defined. The more significant coefficients have the important information because they are identified as the edge and major surface in images. The significant coefficients are defined when their absolute value exceeds the threshold. The standard deviation is used as the weight value of watermark insertion in order to strengthen the weight of the watermark insertion according to the value of the coefficients. The proposed watermarking method is an adaptive scheme, and the proposed two detection algorithms can be adaptively used when the watermarked image is distorted by cropping, filtering, or compression.

This paper is regarding a new input interface based on displacement of mobile devices having a camera. The mobile device can capture consecutive images by the camera, the displacement of the device is estimated by computing the displacement between consecutive images in real-time. The proposed system extracts feature points based on SUSAN comer detector which has low computational complexity. We generate Voronoi domain by using the two-pass algorithm to match extracted features. Finally, the displacement of a mobile device is estimated by calculating SAD values between two consecutive images. We evaluated the performance of the proposed algorithm with 1500 images. True matching accuracy of the proposed algorithm is 90% and the computation for each image is conducted in 5m sec.
Automatic Threshold Selection and Contrast Intensification Technique for Image Enhancement
Lee, Geum-Boon ; Cho, Beom-Joon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 462~470
This study applies fuzzy functions to improve image quality under the assumption that uncertainty of image information due to low contrast is based on vagueness and ambiguity of the brightness pixel values. To solve the problem of low contrast images whose brightness distribution is inclined, we use the k-means algorithm as a parameter of the fuzzy function, through which automatic critical points can be found to differentiate objects from background and contrast between bright and dark points can be improved. The fuzzy function is presented at the three main stages presented to improve image quality: fuzzification, contrast enhancement and defuzzification. To measure improved image quality, we present the fuzzy index and entropy index and in comparison with those of histogram equalization technique, it shows outstanding performance.

The deaf can not recognize useful sound informations such as alarm, doorbell, siren, car horn, and phone ring etc., because they have the hearing impairment. To solve this problems, portable hearing assistive devices which have suitable environment sound recognition methods are needed. In this paper, the DTW algorithm for sound recognition system with new active slope weighting constraint method was proposed. The environment sound recognition methods consist of three processes. First process is extraction of start point and end point using frequency and amplitude of sound. Second process is extraction of features and third process is classification of features for given segments. As a result of the experiment, the recognition rate of the proposed method is over 90%. And, the recognition rate of the proposed method increased about 20% than the conventional algorithm. Therefore if there are developed portable assistive devices which use developed method to recognize environment sound for hearing-impaired persons, they could be more convenient in life.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 481~491
As the T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) has been actively launched, all the service providers are focusing on finding a new business model using a variety of data services as well as video service. The middleware technology for data broadcasting service, which was presented due to such necessity, known as DMB MATE (Mobile Application Terminal Environment), provides a running environment of the applications and APIs so that the various data applications can support high-level functionalities for the interactive data service. In this paper, in order to effectively provide the data service under restricted channel environment of T-DMB, we introduce a service technology and an interactive data broadcasting system using the DMB MATE, specifically proposing a design method of T-DMB MATE receiver capable of the presented DMB MATE service. Finally, the performance of developed system is confirmed through the T-DMB data broadcasting experiment under a variety of conditions.

With the recent development and increasing importance of personal identification systems, biometric technologies with less risk of loss or unauthorized use are being popularized rapidly. In particular, because of their high identification rate and convenience, fingerprint identification systems are being used much more commonly than other biometric systems such as iris recognition, face recognition and vein pattern recognition. However, a fingerprint identification system has the problem that artificially forged finger-prints can be used as input data. Thus, in order to solve this problem, the present study proposed a method for detecting forged fingerprints by measuring the degree of attenuation when the light from an optical fingerprint sensor passes through the finger and analyzing changes in the transmission of light over stages at fixed intervals. In order to prove improvement in the performance of the proposed system, we conducted an experiment that compared the system with an existing multi-sensor recognition system that measures also the temperature of fingerprint. According to the results of the experiment, the proposed system improved the forged fingerprint detection rate by around 32.6% and this suggests the possibility of solving the security problem in fingerprint identification systems.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 504~515
Fast transmission speeds and various wired network services have been combined with the convenience and mobility of wireless services. The combination of wired/wireless technologies is spreading rapidly since it enables the creation of new services and provides new features to both users and service providers. In such wired/wireless integrated services, network integration is very important because such systems are integrated by a linkage between heterogeneous networks and they involve an integration of transmission technologies across networks. In this situation, existing security and communication technologies are unsuitable since the network are integrated with heterogeneous networks. The network may also have several security flaws. In existing homogeneous networks, user authentication and key management between heterogeneous networks are required for these new technologies. The establishment of security technologies for heterogeneous devices is a very important task between homogeneous networks. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient key management system for a heterogeneous network environment. Our system provides secure communications between heterogeneous network devices.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 516~524
This paper presents a new modeling technique for the simulation of cloth specific characteristics with a set of hard constraints using an implicit constraint enforcement scheme. A conventional explicit Baumgarte constraint stabilization method has several defects. It requires users to pick problem-dependent coefficients to achieve fast convergence and has inherent stabilization limits. The proposed implicit constraint enforcement method is stable with large time steps, does not require problem dependent feed-back parameters, and guarantees the natural physics-based motion of an object. In addition, its computational complexity is the same as the explicit Baumgarte method. This paper describes a formulation of implicit constraint enforcement and provides a constraint error analysis. The modeling technique for complex components of cloth such as seams, buttons, sharp creases, wrinkles, and prevention of excessive elongation are explained. Combined with an adaptive constraint activation scheme, the results using the proposed method show the substantial enhancement of the realism of cloth simulations with a corresponding savings in computational cost.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 525~543
Recently, the scope of user interface is increasing the relative importance in software development dramatically. As a result, there are various relative technologies like as SWING, MFC, Web 2.0, and etc. However, most current software developments are progressed in separate development process with user interface part and business part respectively. This causes the problems, like as a difficulty in the integration process, an development period's delay, and a poor reusability for the constructed models. That is, the extendability and reusability of the created models is being decreased because UI modeling is not systematic and hierarchical, and the consistent integration technique between UI modeling and business modeling does not supported. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an unified and systematic UI modeling process based on UML, using the hierarchical metamodel according to the abstraction levels of development phase. We suggest an UI metamodel, which contains a hierarchy by layering the modeling elements in PIM and PSM based on maturity degree of the development. An hierarchical modeling process combined UI modeling and business modeling is built by applying the UI and business metamodel in terms of three modeling phases(concept/specification/concrete). The effectiveness of the modeling process is shown by applying the proposed process into an Internet Shopping Mall System. Through the exploratory results, the hierarchical UI metamodel and process can produce systematic and layered UI models. This can improve the quality and reusability of models.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 544~553
The general sensor network uses bundle method to collect fixed information from sensor node. However, this method is difficult to actively cope with major sensing objects in healthcare environment including status and position change of person and change of surrounding environment. In order to support the healthcare environment, certain information should be provided in accordance with the change of status of person and surrounding circumstance and also must cope with the change of network type by movement of person. This paper analyzes LEACH protocol which guarantees effectiveness of network as it constitutes clusters between Agilla model that is a representative multi agent middle ware and surrounding nodes. Based on the result of this analysis, it suggests LEACH_Mobile protocol which guarantees node mobility that is the weakest point of LEACH protocol. Moreover, it designs mobility agent middleware which supports dynamic function change of node and mobility agent module which supports dynamic function change of mobile node as components of LEACH_Mobile routing module. In addition, it is definitely increase performance which in mobile node of transfer data rate through LEACH_Mobile protocol of simulation result.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 11, issue 4, 2008, Pages 554~565
The French neo-impressionist painter, George Seurat, introduced pointillism under the theory that the individual pigments of colors on the canvas are reconstructed on the human retina. Pointillism is a painting technique in which many small brush strokes are combined to form a picture in the canvas. When such a painting is seen from a far, the individual stroke color are unnoticeable and they are seen as intermixed colors. This is called juxtaposed color mixture. In this paper, we present a painterly rendering method for generating the pointillism images. For expressing countless separate dots which shown in the pointillism works, we propose a hierarchical points structure using Wang The method. Also a user defined palette is constructed based on the usage that Neo-Impressionist painter works on his palette. Lastly, based on this, a probability algorithm will be introduced, which divides the colors in the image(sampled by hierarchical point structure) into juxtaposed colors. A hierarchical points set which undergone juxtaposed color division algorithm is converted into brush strokes.
