Kim, Kyung-Deok ; Jung, E-Gun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1509~1520
Contrary to ubiquitous environments, indoor computing environments like home network doesn't support user mobility. This paper suggests UPnP A/V multimedia system using prediction of mobility for adaption of seamless multimedia service. The multimedia system enables indoor mobile users to play multimedia contents by transferring the current session to an adjacent device automatically. The system represents users' contextual information by Five Ws and One H model, and predicts user's movements by using contextual information and transitions of locations. The prediction basically includes multiple locations so that it improves accuracy of prediction. We evaluated the suggested system using in accuracy of prediction, time for prediction, handover time for service, and the system showed that adapt ion of seamless multimedia service was enabled by using prediction of mobility on mobile user.
A Scheduling Algorithm of AP for Alleviating Unfairness Property of Upstream-Downstream TCP Flows in Wireless LAN
Lim, Do-Hyun ; Seok, Seung-Joon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1521~1529
There is a serious unfairness problem between upstream and downstream flows of AP in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN. This problem is because Wireless LAN's DCF MAC protocol provides AP with equal channel access priority to mobile noded. Also, it makes this problem worse that the TCP's Data segment loss is more effective on throughput than the TCP's ACK segment. In this paper, we first make several simulations to analysis the unfairness in the various point of view and to find reasons of the unfairness. Also, this paper presents AP's scheduling scheme to alleviate the unfairness problem and evaluate the scheme through ns2 simulator.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1530~1538
KISTI-ACOMS ver. 2.0 has been distributed to more than 340 academic societies and used by more than 130 academic societies for 4 years since 2005 and still is desired for use by lots of other academic societies. But contrary to the desire and requests for system upgrades of academic societies, ACOMS has not been improved for last 3 years and some academic societies began to use domestic or foreign similar pay online peer review systems. In this paper, a new integrated portal service system is suggested in order to attempt national production cost-saving and quality improvement of academic information by creating and collecting high quality scientific and technologic academic information inexpensively. We come up with methodology of integration and utilization of a personal academic activity portal system interoperable with other services of KISTI, an open citation reference database automatically constructed by authors' activity and a journal evaluation system based on impact factor.

Hwang, Joo-Yeon ; Lim, Dong-Sup ; Paik, Doo-Won ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1539~1546
According to photography, lines are important elements that make composition and mood of photo. In this paper, we proposed a measure for compositional dissimilarity between photos using lines which are basic elements of photography. To identify patterns of lines which classify composition of photos, we investigated both features of compositionally same photos and compositionally different photos. Then we developed effective measure for compositional dissimilarity between photos by applying the investigated features to the measure, and we implemented an image searching system which retrieves photo compositionally similar to given query to evaluate performance of proposed method. The searching system showed the precision of about 85% maximally for the highly matched 10 results and was capable of reliably retrieving compositionally similar to given query even if some objects were included in photos.
Flame Detection using Region Expansions and On-line Variances in Infrared image
Kim, Dong-Keun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1547~1556
In this paper, we propose a flame detection method using region expansions and on-line variances in outdoor infrared video sequences. To segment flame candidates' regions in infrared images, we first, extract initial regions by high threshold values in infrared images and then the segmented regions are expanded to their neighbors with similar high intensity values. The segmented regions could be non-flame areas like bare-grounds and buildings. Therefore, to detect flame regions in the segmented regions, the segmented regions which have high intensity values in infrared image, are tracked using bounding regions in frame sequences. Variances in the tracked regions are calculated effectively by on-line updates to measure intensity variations on the tracked regions. Experiments show that the proposed method, which is based on region expansions and the average of on-line variances in the regions, is efficient to detect flames in infrared image.

Bae, Sung-Ho ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1557~1562
In the hydraulic room of a forging press machine, a system which can detect and prevent risks at its early stage is needed because there may be a leakage due to the damage of the connection parts of the piping which can endanger human life and mechanical damage. In this paper, the system to automatically recognize a leakage of hydraulic fluid in terms of using the pan/tilt camera from a remote place is implemented. It finds the bounding boxes which are recognized with object regions in the process of labeling and detects the proper leakage regions of hydraulic fluid with the ratios of width and height of the bounding boxes and compactness of the leakage shape. Also, it performs noise removal and calibration for transition and rotation of image as a preprocessing process. The experimental results show that the proposed system has been verified to detect the leakage regions accurately in various sources of light.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1563~1571
In this paper, we propose a new boundary matching method for the temporal error concealment and a post processing algorithm for perceptual quality improvement of the concealed frame. Temporal error concealment is a method that substitutes error blocks with similar blocks from the reference frame. In conventional H.264/AVC standard, it compares outside pixels of erroneous block with inside pixels of reference block to find the most similar block. However, it is very possible that the conventional method substitutes erroneous block with the wrong one because it compares only narrow spatial range of pixels. In this paper, for substituting erroneous blocks with more correct blocks, we propose enhanced boundary matching method by comparing inside and outside pixels of reference block with outside pixels of erroneous block and setting up additional candidate motion vector in the fixed search range based on maximum and minimum value of candidate motion vectors. Furthermore, we propose a post processing method to smooth edges between concealed and decoded blocks without error by using the modified deblocking filter. We identified that the proposed method shows quality improvement of about 0.9dB over the conventional boundary matching methods.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1572~1580
Combing through entire video files for the purpose of recognizing and retrieving matching movies requires much time and memory space. Instead, most current similar movie-matching methods choose to analyze only a part of each movie's video-image information. Yet, these methods still share a critical problem of erroneously recognizing as being different matching videos that have been altered only in resolution or converted merely with a different codecs. This paper proposes an audio-information-based search algorithm by which similar movies can be identified. The proposed method prepares and searches through a database of movie's spectral peak information that remains relatively steady even with changes in the bit-rate, codecs, or sample-rate. The method showed a 92.1% search success rate, given a set of 1,000 video files whose audio-bit-rate had been altered or were purposefully written in a different codec.

Recently, we can hear various kinds of music in everywhere and anytime. If a user wants to find the music which was heard before in a street or cafe, but he does not know the title of the music, it is difficult to find it. That is the limitation of previous retrieval system of music data. To overcome these problems, we research a method of content-based retrieval of music data based on the recorded humming, the part of recorded music and the played musical instrument. In this paper, we investigated previous content-based retrieval methods of papers, systems and patents. Based on that, we research a method of content-based retrieval of music data. That is, in case of using the recorded humming and music for query, we extract the frequency information from the recorded humming/music and the stored music data by using FFT. We use a MIDI file in case of query by the played musical instrument. And by using dynamic programming matching, the error caused by the disparity of length between the input source with the stored music data could be reduced.

Kim, Tae-Hoon ; Tak, Sung-Woo ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1593~1608
If a certain relay node in multi-hop wireless networks might become a malicious node that does not cooperate with other nodes or a selfish node, network throughput will be dramatically decreased. Most of existing ad hoc routing protocols assuming that the nodes will fully cooperate with other nodes do not resolve the problem of network performance degradation due to malicious and selfish nodes. This paper presents the CARE (Cooperative Ad hoc routing protocol based REputation) scheme incorporating the reputation management that can achieve a multi-hop wireless network with high throughput performance. The proposed scheme provides the horizontal cross-layer approach which can identify misbehaving malicious, selfish nodes dropped out of the hop-by-hop based packet processing in the network and then set up an optimal packet routing path that will detour misbehaving nodes. And the vertical cross-layer approach contained in the CARE scheme attempts to improve the quality of routing paths by exploiting the quality of link information received from the MAC layer. Besides, it provides high TCP throughput by exploiting the reputation values of nodes acquired from the network layer into the transport layer. A case study on experiments and simulations shows that the CARE scheme incorporating vertical and horizontal cross-layer approaches yields better performance in terms of the low rate of packet loss, fast average packet delivery time, and high TCP throughput between end-to-end nodes.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1609~1622
In wireless sensor networks, a clustering protocol is an efficient method to prolong network lifetime. In general, it results in more energy consumption at the cluster-head node. Hence, such a protocol must changes the cluster formation and cluster-head node in each round to prolong the network lifetime. But, this method also causes large amount of energy consumption during the set-up process of cluster formation. In order to improve energy efficiency, in this paper, we propose a new clustering algorithm. In this algorithm, we exclude duplicated data of adjacent nodes and transmits the threshold value. We define a group as the sensor nodes within close proximity of each other. In a group, a node senses and transmits data at a time on the round-robin basis. In a view of whole network, group is treated as one node. During the setup phase of a round, intra clusters are formed first and then they are re-clustered(network cluster) by choosing cluster-heads(group). In the group with a cluster-head, every member node plays the role of cluster-head on the round-robin basis. Hence, we can lengthen periodic round by a factor of group size. As a result of analysis and comparison, our scheme reduces energy consumption of nodes, and improve the efficiency of communications in sensor networks compared with current clustering methods.
An Efficient Visualization Method of Two-Dimensional Vector Fields
Jung, Il-Hong ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1623~1628
This paper presents the development of certain highly efficient and accurate method for computing tangent curves for two-dimensional vector fields. Unlike convention methods, such as Runge-Kutta, for computing tangent curves which produce only approximations, the method developed herein produces exact values on the tangent curves based on piecewise linear variation over a triangle in 2D. This new method assumes that the vector field is piecewise linearly defined over a triangle in 2D. It is also required to decompose the rectangular cell into two triangular cells. The critical points can be easily found by solving a simple linear system for each triangle. This method is to find exit points by producing a sequence of points on the curve with the computation of each subsequent point based on the previous. Because points on the tangent curves are calculated by the explicit solution for each triangle, this new method provides correct topologies in visualizing 2D vector fields.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1640~1651
In this paper we introduce a new approach to stroke based rendering using brush stroke profile. Our proposed method, based on image retrieval method, is a simple but flexible and scalable method to create various painting styles, for which scalable database constructed with the collection of real stroke data is used. Input image is reproduced with combinations of brush stoke in the database, when a search process to determinate appropriate brush stroke and a judgment process to decide whether to draw the retrieved brush stroke on the canvas or not are presented. In addition, this paper suggests a new brush stroke model and a depiction technique in order to utilize effective height information which allows natural texture depiction, or good visual effect, without carrying out physical simulation. Our method is able to create diverse variations of painting by controling various user parameters. It also provides scalable framework that can produce various painting styles with different artistic media by changing the stroke combinations of stroke database.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1652~1660
The main objective of this research is to build a behavior prediction model of gameplay for MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game using the GOMS analysis method. GOMS analysis is an observational approach to HCI(Human Computer Interaction) to model and predict behaviors of a human operator in a highly interactive task. In this research, a pilot experiment was previously conducted with three skilled gamers. The gamers were provided with the goals and operators through the user's guide book, and they found methods and selection rules while being observed. Based on the results obtained from the pilot study, this research was expanded and the model was further tested with 30 subjects (game experts). The new outcomes revealed that the relevance of GOMS analysis for predicting selection rules is 96.25% according to the degree of abstraction and 77.35% based on the degree of complexity. This research will provide game designers with a new testing mechanism in the early development stages, in order to improve the quality of the game product.

Lee, Young-Sook ; Kim, Jae-Ho ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1661~1670
In this paper, by analyzing the nonverbal communication of personified animals and human animation characters, the differences of gesture and the amount of similarity between personified animal characters and human characters were studied. Accordingly, personified characters were classified into three categories: humanoid characters, animal-like characters and mixed-type characters which possess characteristics of both human and animals. Furthermore, we proposed a 7-step process for the personification of animal characters. Diverse information of personification was provided for animation designers in this paper. A DB system for animal character designing and automation for animation utilizing personified characters are expected to be constructed.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1671~1679
The existing subjects of supply chain management, which link business firms to customers, have focused on forward logistics such as acquisition of low and subsidiary parts, manufacturing, distribution and sales. Consequently, it is emphasized that supply chain management has to be a sustainable business activity. Nevertheless, capabilities of reverse supply chain management for domestic companies are still relatively limited compared to advanced foreign companies. For this reason, this study aims to develop the service platform, which provides information on return, retrieval, abolish and recycling using RFID, includes information on packing, placement, loading and unloading and transportation of the goods. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, the research previous studies and analyze achieved diverse cases on reverse logistics, review the present state, and propose service platform application to manage reverse supply chain which will be applied.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1680~1691
To improve the quality of healthcare and build up the health delivery system, electronic health record system is important for healthcare institutions providing health services. However, the systems currently operated in domestic healthcare institutions use independent software interface with distributed environment for data search and process. Therefore, it raises an additional expense to buy or develop each interface module when there is a link to new system and the problem of complexity. To solve these problems, this study implemented the service oriented architecture basis for home nursing service and carried out an assessment. The study defined the process modeling and business requirements based on the scenario of service and drew 17 suitable services based on five verification items for service design. To draw the final service, seven services were selected by service litmus test (SLT). The study found that, by the improvement of business process for healthcare service support department, SOA based information system has an effect of time reduction of patient processing time. In conclusion, to enable the hospital information system to cope with various demands of healthcare consumers, it is necessary to consider the application of SOA technology which has excellent interoperability, reusability and maintenance.

Kim, A-Mi ; Song, Ju-Whan ; Gwun, Ou-Bong ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 12, issue 11, 2009, Pages 1692~1700
This paper proposes the direction distribution of surface normal vectors as a feature descriptor of three-dimensional models. Proposed the feature descriptor handles rotation invariance using a principal component analysis(PCA) method, and performs mesh simplification to make it robust and nonsensitive against noise addition. Our method picks samples for the distribution of normal vectors to be proportional to the area of each polygon, applies weight to the normal vectors, and applies interpolation to enhance discrimination so that the information on the surface with less area may be less reflected on composing a feature descriptor. This research measures similarity between models with a L1-norm in the probability density histogram where the distances of feature descriptors are normalized. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method has improved the retrieval performance described in an average normalized modified retrieval rank(ANMRR) by about 17.2% and the retrieval performance described in a quantitative discrimination scale by 9.6%~17.5% as compared to the existing method.
