Design and Implementation of Channel Filtering System Based on TV Watching Patterns
Park, Woo-Ram ; Park, Tae-Keun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1413~1422
With the emergence of digital TV broadcasting, various channels are provided to a TV audience. But it is getting hard for the audience to find his or her preferred TV programs due to the huge number of TV channels. In order to mitigate the difficulty, TV broadcasting companies provide an electronic program guide (EPG), which is a digital guide to scheduled broadcast TV programs. However, it results in the information overload problem and the time-consuming problem since the number of TV channels and programs is gradually on the increase. In this paper, we design and develop a channel filtering system, which recommends a small number of channels by filtering TV channels based on the watching pattern of the TV audience. The channel filtering system does not require the replacement or upgrade of existing TV or set-top box. In addition, it increases usability by skipping the channels that broadcast the audience's non-preferred TV programs while the TV audience presses the channel up/down button.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1423~1435
Building wireless sensor networks requires a constituting sensor node to consider the following limited hardware resources: a small battery lifetime limiting available power supply for the sensor node, a low-power microprocessor with a low-performance computing capability, and scarce memory resources. Despite such limited hardware resources of the sensor node, the sensor node platform needs to activate real-time sensing, guarantee the real-time processing of sensing data, and exchange data between individual sensor nodes concurrently. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an energy-efficient real-time task scheduling technique for battery-powered wireless sensor nodes. The proposed energy-efficient task scheduling technique controls the microprocessor's operating frequency and reduces the power consumption of a task by exploiting the slack time of the task when the actual execution time of the task can be less than its worst case execution time. The outcomes from experiments showed that the proposed scheduling technique yielded efficient performance in terms of guaranteeing the completion of real-time tasks within their deadlines and aiming to provide low power consumption.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1444~1452
There is very little information on mobile terminal service systems such as CRUMPET because the all the users have different situations and characteristic, and so it is also difficult to find correlations. Because of the difficulty of customizing and recommending information based on preference stemming from the users' various situations and characteristics, they usually provide limited, conceptual information. This paper will recommend a system that recommends information tailored to the user's situation and characteristics, using the Spearman correlation coefficients. It finds correlations from users' information and sequences information that is suitable to the user's situation and characteristics into a list, thereby solving the problem of limited, conceptual information. Performance tests have revealed when compared to existing service systems, this system is more effective in terms of precision and recall, with a 92.3% precision rate, and a 73.8% recall rate.

Park, Dong-In ; Kim, Tae-Won ; Ko, Yuh-Ho ; Choi, Jae-Gark ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1463~1473
In this paper, we propose a modified watershed algorithm to extract more correct edge and reduce processing time. Two new algorithms are proposed in this paper. The first one is applying two conventional watershed expansion methods known as rainfall and immersion simulation jointly. We analyze the advantage and problem of each simulation and then propose a new expansion method that keeps the advantage and removes the problem in order to extract more correct edge and reduce processing time. The second is a new priority decision algorithm to obtain more correct edge of a region. Some zero-crossing points of gradient are expected to be edge of a region but the conventional method has a limitation that it cannot extract those points as edge. Therefore we propose a new priority decision algorithm for watershed in order to get more correct edge. We compare the proposed method with the conventional method through experiments and prove that the proposed method can extract more correct edge of region.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1474~1486
In this paper, we propose an algorithm which represents the distance depiction technique of real painting that named "Aerial Perspective" in painterly rendering. It is a painting technique that depicts the attenuations of light in the atmosphere, and the scattering effect is changed by the distance, altitude and density of atmospheres. For the reflection of these natures, we use the depth information corresponding to an input image and user-defined parameters, so that user changes the effect level. We calculate the distance and altitude of every pixel with the depth information and parameters about shot information, and control the scattering effects by expression parameters. Additionally, we accentuate the occluding edges detected by the depth information to clarify the sense of distance between fore and back-ground. We apply our algorithm on various landscape scenes, and generate the distance-emphasized results compared to existing works.

Lee, Dong-Shik ; Kim, Young-Mo ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1487~1493
H.264 processes more detailed and more motion information for the compression efficiency. However, motion vector of H.264 takes more portion than previous standards such as MPEG-1/2/4 do, so that it is needed to consider motion vectors. This paper proposes the new algorithm with leaf mode in order to compress the motion vector efficiently. The proposed algorithm concentrates modes' distribution with leaf mode and carries out the compression of motion vector with less modes. The proposed algorithm adopted in current
motion vector matrix also can be extend to
. The experiments shows that the proposed algorithm reduces up to 12.68% at header and 9.7% at resultant bitstream.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1494~1505
A variety of sounds take place in medium and small-sized manufactories producing many kinds of parts in a small quantity with one press. We developed the identification system for the quality of parts using HTM(Hierarchical Temporal Memory)-based sound recognition. HTM is the theory that the operation principle of human brain's neocortex is applied to computer, suggested by Jeff Hopkins. This theory memorizes temporal and spatial patterns hierarchically about the real world, which is known for its cognitive power superior to the previous recognition technologies in many cases. By applying the HTM model to the sound recognition, we developed the identification system for the quality of molding parts. In order to verify its performance we recorded the various sounds at the moment of producing parts in the real factory, constructed the HTM network of sound, and then identified the quality of parts by repeating learning and training. It reveals that this system gets an excellent and accurate results at the noisy factory.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1506~1513
Game Software is the high-value industry that is based on fun elements. To develop Game Software successfully, the method for systematically classifying and searching about fun elements needs. However, fun elements of game are still made by game developers 'experience', and have ambiguities about what are considered at development phase because of difference between viewpoints and definitions about them. We structured 9 groups and 34 fun elements after that 50 fun elements elicited from existing literature are classifies and refines by statistical analysis. And we found a omitted area with the result that the classified elements are applied to Roger Callois's Theory. Finally, we elicited new elements of omitted areas from web site and searched 1 group and 4 fun elements.
Java and C/C++ Mixed Programming
Kim, Sang-Hoon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1514~1524
The standard Java class library does not support the platform-dependent features needed by the application. Therefore, the Java application including the platform -dependent features must supplement the required features by invoking native functions using JNI. The native language programmer has to explicitly specify how to connect to various Java objects and later to disconnect from them. In this paper, I suggest a way to avoid these annoying works. The native method in the pure java class can not contain a native code block. By providing a native code block for the native method, it is possible for programmer to write a native code without being aware of JNI. To achieve this, I introduced the native class that is a java class on the native environment, and made it possible to interchange data by placing an arbitrator between the java class and the native class.

Kim, Yoo-Won ; Jo, Geun-Sik ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1525~1533
With the digital terrestrial television broadcasting transition, terrestrial television broadcasting have required the replacement of retransmission facilities for the analog broadcasting installed in the existing apartment, building, cable TV station, MATV system and so on. In addition, new standards have been enacted for retransmission of the digital television broadcasting in MATV system. To deal with this issue, in this paper, we propose a new 8-VSB remodulator that can retransmit signals of the terrestrial digital television broadcasting. Moreover, we present a standard and the process composition of the 8-VSB remodulator, and an experimental environment configuration for performance evaluation. To achieve this, we have implemented the 8-VSB remodulator with the sequential process components comprised of the RF signal retransmission, the TS stream modulator, the RF signal reception and demodulation. Through the simulation, we analyze the performance standard from the measured data such as spurious and phase noise. And then, we measure SNR and EVM of each attenuation step of the signal obtained by the signal processor and the 8-VSB remodulator with the same retransmission environment and conditions. Experimental results show that both the 8-VSB remodulator and the signal processor can be used as equipment for the retransmission of the terrestrial digital television broadcasting. In addition, the 8-VSB remodulator performed well to improve the transmission efficiency for the digital broadcasting signal, compare to the existing signal processor.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1534~1546
In sensor network systems, various hierarchical clustering schemes have been proposed in order to efficiently maintain the energy consumption of sensor nodes. Most of these schemes, however, are hardly applicable in practice since these schemes might produce unbalanced clusters or randomly distributed clusters without taking into account of the distribution of sensor nodes. To overcome the limitations of such hierarchical clustering schemes, we propose a novel scheme called CSM(Clustering using Split & Merge algorithm), which exploits node split and merge algorithm of tree-based indexing structures to efficiently construct clusters. Our extensive performance studies show that the CSM constructs highly balanced clustering in a energy efficient way and achieves higher performance up to 1.6 times than the previous clustering schemes, under various operational conditions.

Until now, many Computer Aided Education(CAE) contents are developed for kids and children with disabilities The contents cover various types of training, including visual perception training, intelligence development training, and literature education areas. Major problems on those contents are those contents requires long training time on desktop machine, which deteriorates human activities. These problems also cause inaction syndrome for young kids and children with disabilities. Solving this problem, we require a human motion sensing contents on touch screen or touch board, which interacts with a trainees and enhancing activity, collaboration and immersiveness. We implement and develope an education contents interacts with a trainee using beam projector or screen and IR(Infra-Red) pens using wiimote controller sensing technology.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 10, 2010, Pages 1565~1574
While we are driving a car, we are able to listen to musics by two ways: by selecting (manipulating) what we want and by just playing as they are given (in CD). These methods make a driver tired while he is driving or it means that a music which is provided is not concerned with a driver's preference. To improve these problems, there have been many studies about the automatic music providing systems based on driver's emotion. However, these studies have some difficult problems: the first one is that it is not easy to determine driver's emotion, and the other one is that it is hard to recommend and play the suitable music corresponding to the determined user's emotion. In this paper, to overcome the second problem mentioned above, a new mapping method between driver's emotion and music genre for automatic music providing system on vehicle is presented and two experiments are examined for the validation of the proposed method. The experimental results and discussions are explored to show the effectiveness and validity of the proposed method.
