Maeng, Doo-Lyel ; Hong, Byung-Woo ; Kim, Sung-Jo ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 487~495
It has been required to develop an accurate and reliable evaluation method for the performance of biometric systems as their use is getting popular. Among a number of biometric systems, face recognition is one of the most widely used techniques and this leads to develop a stable evaluation method for face recognition systems in order to standardize the performance of face recognition systems. However, it is considered as a difficult task to evaluation such systems due to a large number of factors that affect their performance. Thus, it may be infeasible to take into account all the environmental factors that are related to the performance of face recognition systems and this naturally suggests an evaluation method for the overall performance based on scenarios. In this paper, we have analyzed environmental factors that are related to the performance of general face recognition systems and proposed their evaluation method taking into account those factors. We have proposed an evaluation method based on scenario that considers the combination of individual environment factors instead of evaluating the performance of face recognition systems regarding each factor. Indeed, we have presented examples on the evaluation of face recognition systems based on scenario that takes into account overall environmental factors.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 504~511
In this paper, we propose the face region recognition system for City-Security CCTV(Closed Circuit Television) using hippocampal neural network which is modelling of human brain's hippocampus. This system is composed of feature extraction, learning and recognition part. The feature extraction part is constructed using PCA(Principal Component Analysis) and LDA(Linear Discriminants Analysis). In the learning part, it can label the features of the image-data which are inputted according to the order of hippocampal neuron structure to reaction-pattern according to the adjustment of a good impression in a dentate gyrus and remove the noise through the auto-associative memory in the CA3 region. In the CA1 region receiving the information of the CA3, it can make long-term memory learned by neuron. Experiments confirm the each recognition rate, that are shape change and light change. The experimental results show that we can compare a feature extraction and learning method proposed in this paper of any other methods, and we can confirm that the proposed method is superior to existing methods.

An Image Merging Method for Two High Dynamic Range Images of Different Exposure
Kim, Jin-Heon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 526~534
This paper describes an algorithm which merges two HDR pictures taken under different exposure time to display on the LDR devices such as LCD or CRT. The proposed method does not generate the radiance map, but directly merges using the weights computed from the input images. The weights are firstly produced on the pixel basis, and then blended with a Gaussian function. This process prevents some possible sparkle noises caused by radical change of the weights and contributes to smooth connection between 2 image informations. The chrominance informations of the images are merged on the weighted averaging scheme using the deviations of RGB average and their differences. The algorithm is characterized by the feature that it represents well the unsaturated area of 2 original images and the connection of the image information is smooth. The proposed method uses only 2 input images and automatically tunes the whole internal process according to them, thus autonomous operation is possible when it is included in HDR cameras which use double shuttering scheme or double sensor cells.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 535~546
Digital images have undesired color casts due to various illumination conditions and intrinsic characteristics of cameras. Since the color casts in the images deteriorate performance of color representations, color correction is required for further analysis of images. In this paper, an algorithm for detection and removal of color casts is presented. The proposed algorithm consists of four steps: retrieving similar image using color by correlation, extraction of near neutral color regions, kernel density estimation, and removal of color casts. Ambiguities in near neutral color regions are excluded based on kernel density estimation by the color by correlation algorithm. The method determines whether there are color casts by chromaticity distributions in near neutral color regions, and removes color casts for color constancy. Experimental results suggest that the proposed method outperforms the gray world algorithm and the color by correlation algorithm.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 547~559
Delaunay triangulation is suitable for fingerprint matching because of its robustness to rotation and translation. However, missing and spurious minutiae degrade the performance and computational efficiency. In this paper, we propose a method of combining local quality assessment and 4-category minutiae classification to improve accuracy and decrease computational complexity in matching process. Experimental results suggest that removing low quality areas from matching candidate areas and classifying minutiae improve computational efficiency without degrading performance. The results proved that the proposed algorithm outperforms the matching algorithm (BOZORTH3) provided by NIST.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 560~574
Recently, many people can easily contact video telephony service through the mobile terminal owing to the commercialization of 3G communication technology. However, the quality of the serviced video telephony has been not good yet by the actual mobile restrictions. For solving quality problems, this paper presents the design of the object-based video CODEC using hybrid transform in mobile video telephony. The proposed design firstly segment each frame into a significant object and an insignificant object. The proposed design is to improve the quality of a significant object by limiting the bit rate of a insignificant object. Thus, we compress a significant object with high quality and low compression ratio and compress an insignificant object with low quality and high compression ratio. Furthermore, we control the bit rate of the video stream in the limited bandwidth by adjusting the compression ratio of each object. From experimental results, we confirmed that our method has more higher quality than methods in the conventional CODECs at the significant region on the same bit rate.
Scrambling Technology using Scalable Encryption in SVC
Kwon, Goo-Rak ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 575~581
With widespread use of the Internet and improvements in streaming media and compression technology, digital music, video, and image can be distributed instantaneously across the Internet to end-users. However, most conventional Digital Right Management are often not secure and not fast enough to process the vast amount of data generated by the multimedia applications to meet the real-time constraints. The SVC offers temporal, spatial, and SNR scalability to varying network bandwidth and different application needs. Meanwhile, for many multimedia services, security is an important component to restrict unauthorized content access and distribution. This suggests the need for new cryptography system implementations that can operate at SVC. In this paper, we propose a new scrambling encryption for reserving the characteristic of scalability in MPEG4-SVC. In the base layer, the proposed algorithm is applied and performed the selective scambling. And it encrypts various MVS and intra-mode scrambling in the enhancement layer. In the decryption, it decrypts each encrypted layers by using another encrypted keys. Throughout the experimental results, the proposed algorithms have low complexity in encryption and the robustness of communication errors.

Recently the commercial value of GIS(geographic information system) has been increased with growing application demands of spatial information in life space. Also, GIS has been expanded to the integrated information system that provides the ease access to map information by public users and also the combined service of GIS map data and various multimedia contents. But several security problems of GIS map data have brought up at GIS industries, such as the illegal copy and distribution of GIS map data. Furthermore, the copyright protection of GIS map data has not been researched yet compared with image and video contents. This paper presents a polyline based watermarking scheme for the copyright protection of GIS vector map. The proposed scheme analyzes the structure of vector map and embeds adaptively the watermark by using the distance distribution of polyline components. From experimental results, we verified that the proposed scheme satisfies the invisibility and the robustness of geometrical attacks.

Ahn, Eun-Young ; Kim, Jae-Won ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 601~608
This investigation proposes a new method to overcome disadvantages of panorama VR that is oriented toward spacial information and Object VR that is oriented toward object itself and consequently to make 3D virtual reality (VR) contents efficiently by using image based approach. 3D VR contents provide satisfactory qualities to users but 3D modeling is complex and elaborative and requires high cost. So, this paper aims at reducing tremendous efforts for making 3D VR by substituting 3D modeling with 'advanced Billboard'(we call it Smart Billboard). Smart Billboard has a mechanism for selecting an adequate mapping image that is observable at each user viewpoint and carry on texture mapping into the Billboard. And it is validated with the practical embodiments of a virtual museum in which the exhibitions are prepared by Smart Billboard.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 4, 2010, Pages 609~617
Since Korean mobile communication companies each use different mobile platforms, developers must configure and translate their game contents to run under each of the platforms so that they can be serviced correctly. Nevertheless, such translation tasks require lengthy times and costs. This is one of the reasons why a variety of contents could not be provided. In order to mitigate such difficulty, this paper implemented an automatic mobile contents translating system that automatically translates mobile C game contents of the GNEX platform to mobile java contents of the WIPI platform. The GNEX C-to-WIPI Java automatic contents translation system helps minimize the amount of time and cost required in servicing contents to different mobile communication companies by promptly translating a platform-specific-content to run under other platforms. Also, the automatic translation and servicing of existing contents increases the reusability of these contents and also the productivity of new contents thereby offering users with a more variety of games.
