Song, Young-Ho ; Kwon, Taeck-Geun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 933~942
The convergence of the telecommunication industry through the combination of existing network technology and multimedia technology has brought along interactive data services in addition to the traditional broadcast services by providing direct connections between the users and the broadcasters. The interactive data service technology has developed a network which is able to fully support QoS and also a fast enough channel changing technology that is satisfactory to the user, are prerequisites for IPTV success, to provide satisfactory levels of service to exist users. However the current server-client system can't support all increasing needs of users. To overcome these limitations, P2P based IPTV service is currently under researched. Therefore, this thesis proposes a logical view based copy-ahead technique for P2P IPTV to improve the performance of IPTV system.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 943~949
This paper presents some improvements on VLSI implementation of lifting-based 9/7 wavelet transform by optimization hardware multiplication. The proposed solution requires less logic area and power consumption without performance loss compared to previous wavelet filter structure based on lifting scheme. This paper proposes a better approach to the hardware implementation using Lefevre algorithm based on extensions of Pattern search methods. To compare the proposed structure to the previous solutions on full multiplier blocks, we implemented them using Verilog HDL. For a hardware implementation of the two solutions, the logical synthesis on 0.18 um standard cells technology show that area, maximum delay and power consumption of the proposed architecture can be reduced up to 51%, 43% and 30%, respectively, compared to previous solutions for a 200 MHz target clock frequency. Our evaluation show that when design VLSI chip of lifting-based 9/7 wavelet filter, our solution is better suited for standard-cell application-specific integrated circuits than prior works on complete multiplier blocks.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 950~959
The Election paradigm can be used as a building block in many practical problems such as group communication, atomic commit and replicated data management where a protocol coordinator might be useful. The problem has been widely studied in the research community since one reason for this wide interest is that many distributed protocols need an election protocol. However, mobile ad hoc systems are more prone to failures than conventional distributed systems. Solving election in such an environment requires from a set of mobile nodes to choose a unique node as a leader based on its priority despite failures or disconnections of mobile nodes. In this paper, we describe a solution to the election problem from mobile ad hoc computing systems and it was proved by temporal logic. This solution is based on the Group Membership Detection algorithm.

In this paper, we present a software for placing instruments on stage based on the acoustic properties of the concert hall. In order to simulate the changes in sound depending on the positions of the instruments, we incorporated the idea of location-based reverberation effect which can be realized through the convolution of instrument sounds with the impulse responses from the respective instrument positions. And we developed a software with a real-time convolution engine which enables the user to conveniently simulate the resulting sound of various instrument placements. The software was tested with the impulse response data measured at two concert halls of the National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and Korean traditional instrument sounds. Results of these experiments show that simulated reverberation effects properly represent the spatial placement of instruments on stage.

In this paper, we proposed the single-channel adaptive noise canceller for the enhancement of heart sound (HS) in the auscultation signal. In case of either normal or emergency, a HS diagnosis is difficult due to the various signal source in the chest. Therefore, the HS enhancement is necessary. The conventional active noise canceller(ANC) has two channel, main signal and reference signal. For signal channel, the reference signal in ANC was generated by the proposed HS analyser and BS-Gate based on the characteristic of HS. This reference signal is suitable to the ANC condition. Experimental data were acquisited from MP36, SS30L in BIOPAC Inc., By the experiment, we confirmed that the proposed single-channel ANC was efficient for HS enhancement. And by the comparison with active linear enhancement, it was validate that the proposed ANC is not affected by the variation of a heartbeat.
A Vehicle Detection System Robust to Environmental Changes for Preventing Crime
Bae, Sung-Ho ; Hong, Jun-Eui ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 983~990
The image processing technique is very sensitive to the variation of external environment, so it tends to lose a lot of accuracy when the external environment changes rapidly. In this paper, we propose a vehicle detecting and tracking system for crime prevention suitable for an external environments with various changes using the image processing technique. Because the vehicle camera detector for crime prevention extracts and tracks the vehicle within one lane, it is important to classify a characteristic region rather than the contour of a vehicle. The proposed system detects the entrance of the vehicle using optical flow and tracks the vehicle by classifying the headlights, the bonnet, the front-window and the roof area of the vehicle. Experimental results show that the proposed method is robust to the environmental changes such as type, speed and time of a vehicle.

In this paper, we propose a fast motion estimation algorithm for video encoding. Conventional fast motion estimation algorithms have a serious problem of low prediction quality in some frames. However, full search based fast algorithms have low computational reduction ratio. In the paper, we propose an algorithm that significantly reduces unnecessary computations, while keeping prediction quality almost similar to that of the full search. The proposed algorithm uses distribution probability of motion vectors and adaptive search patterns and block matching criteria. By taking different search patterns and error criteria of block matching according to distribution probability of motion vectors, we can reduces only unnecessary computations efficiently. Our algorithm takes only 20~30% in computational amount and has decreased prediction quality about 0~0.02dB compared with the fast full search of the H.264 reference software. Our algorithm will be useful to real-time video coding applications using MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 AVC standards.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1000~1015
In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm for hand gesture recognition. The hand detection method is based on human skin color, and we use the boundary energy information to locate the hand region accurately, then the moment method will be employed to locate the hand palm center. Hand gesture recognition can be separated into 2 step: firstly, the hand posture recognition: we employ the parallel NNs to deal with problem of hand posture recognition, pattern of a hand posture can be extracted by utilize the fitting ellipses method, which separates the detected hand region by 12 ellipses and calculates the white pixels rate in ellipse line. the pattern will be input to the NNs with 12 input nodes, the NNs contains 4 output nodes, each output node out a value within 0~1, the posture is then represented by composed of the 4 output codes. Secondly, the hand gesture tracking and recognition: we employed the Kalman filter to predict the position information of gesture to create the position sequence, distance relationship between positions will be used to confirm the gesture. The simulation have been performed on Windows XP to evaluate the efficiency of the algorithm, for recognizing the hand posture, we used 300 training images to train the recognizing machine and used 200 images to test the machine, the correct number is up to 194. And for testing the hand tracking recognition part, we make 1200 times gesture (each gesture 400 times), the total correct number is 1002 times. These results shows that the proposed gesture recognition algorithm can achieve an endurable job for detecting the hand and its' gesture.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1016~1022
Far-talking recognition and distributed speech recognition networking techniques are essential to control various and complex home services conveniently with voices. It is possible to control devices everywhere at home by using only voices. In this paper, we have developed the server-client DSP module for distributed speech recognition network system and proposed a new decision rule to decide intelligently whether to accept the recognition results or not by the transferred confidence rate. Simulation results show that the proposed decision rule delivers better performances than the conventional decision by majority rule or decision by first-arrival. Also, we have proposed the new interrupt-polling technique to remedy the defect of existing delay technique which always has to wait several clients' results for a few seconds. The proposed technique queries all client's status after first-arrival and decides whether to wait or not. It can remove unnecessary delay-time without any performance degradation.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1023~1043
As main memory get cheaper, it becomes increasingly affordable to load entire index of DBMS and to access the index. Since speed gap between CPU and main memory is growing bigger, many researches to reduce a cost of main memory access are under the progress. As one of those, cache conscious trees can reduce the cost of main memory access. Since cache conscious trees reduce the number of cache miss by compressing data in node, cache conscious trees can reduce the cost of main memory. Existing cache conscious trees use only fixed one compression technique without consideration of properties of data in node. First, this paper proposes the DC-tree that uses various compression techniques and change data layout in a node according to properties of data in order to reduce cache miss. Second, this paper proposes the level of compression locality that describes properties of data in node by formula. Third, this paper proposes Forced Partial Decomposition (FPD) that reduces the nutter of cache miss. DC-trees outperform 1.7X than B+-tree, 1.5X than simple prefix B+-tree, and 1.3X than pkB-tree, in terms of the number of cache misses. Since proposed DC-trees can be adopted in commercial main memory database system, we believe that DC-trees are practical result.

Kim, Kwang-Baek ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1044~1050
Endoscopic ultrasonography is a medical procedure in endoscopy combined with ultrasound to obtain images of the internal organs. It is useful to have a predictive pathological manifestation since a doctor can observe tumors under mucosa. However, it is often subjective to judge the degree of malignant degeneration of tumors. Thus, in this paper, we propose a feature analysis procedure to make the pathological manifestation more objective so as to improve the accuracy and recall of the diagnosis. In the process, we extract the ultrasound region from the image obtained by endoscopic ultrasonography. It is necessary to standardize the intensity of this region with the intensity of water region as a base since frequently found small intensity difference is only to be inefficient in the analysis. Then, we analyze the spot region with high echo and calcium deposited region by applying LVQ algorithm and bit plane partitioning procedure to tumor regions selected by medical expert. For detailed analysis, features such as intensity value, intensity information included within two random points chosen by medical expert in tumor region, and the slant of outline of tumor region in order to decide the degree of malignant degeneration. Such procedure is proven to be helpful for medical experts in tumor analysis.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1051~1061
Since Korean mobile communication companies each use different mobile platforms, developers must configure and translate their game contents to run under each of the platforms so that they can be serviced correctly. Nevertheless, such translation tasks require lengthy times and costs. This is one of the reasons why a variety of contents could not be provided. In order to mitigate such difficulty, this paper implemented an automatic mobile contents translating system that automatically translates mobile C game contents of the GNEX platform to mobile java contents of the Android platform as a smart platform using a source-level contents translator. The GNEX C-to-Android Java automatic contents translation system helps minimize the amount of time and cost required in servicing contents to different mobile communication companies by promptly translating a platform-specific-content to run under other platforms. Also, the automatic translation and servicing of existing contents increases the reusability of these contents and also the productivity of new contents thereby offering users with a more variety of games.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1062~1075
In the medical image application the difference of intensity is widely used for the image segmentation and feature extraction, and a well known method is the threshold technique that determines a threshold value and generates a binary image based on the threshold. A frequently-used threshold technique is the Otsu algorithm that provides efficient processing and effective selection criterion for choosing the threshold value. However, we cannot get good segmentation results by applying the Otsu algorithm to chest X-ray images. It is because there are various organic structures around lung regions such as ribs and blood vessels, causing unclear distribution of intensity levels. To overcome the ambiguity, we propose in this paper an effective algorithm to extract pulmonary regions that utilizes the Otsu algorithm after removing the background of an X-ray image, constructs intensity-level maps, and uses them for segmenting the X-ray image. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we compared it with the existing 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional Otsu algorithms, and also the results by expert's naked eyes. The experimental result showed that our method achieved the more accurate extraction of pulmonary regions compared to the Otsu methods and showed the similar result as the naked eye's one.

Ko, Kwang-Man ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1076~1087
Together with a new advent of embedded processor developed to support specific application area and it evolution, a new research of software development to support the embedded processor and its commercial challenge has been revitalized. Retargetability is typically achieved by providing target machine information, ADL, as input. The ADLs are used to specify processor and memory architectures and generate software toolkit including compiler, simulator, assembler, profiler, and debugger. The EXPRESSION ADL follows a mixed level approach-it can capture both the structure and behavior supporting a natural specification of the programmable architectures consisting of processor cores, coprocessors, and memories. And it was originally designed to capture processor/memory architectures and generate software toolkit to enable compiler-in-the-loop exploration of SoC architecture. In this paper, we designed the class-based ADL based on the EXPRESSION ADL to promote the write-ability, extensibility and verified the validation of grammar. For this works, we defined 6 core classes and generated the EXPRESSION's compiler and simulator through the MIPS R4000 description.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 13, issue 7, 2010, Pages 1088~1094
Image authentication algorithms have to discriminate forged contents in the various critical fields of military, medical services, digital documents. They must ensure perceptual invisibility and fragility against malicious attacks. It is desirable that watermarking algorithms support sufficient insertion capacity and blind feature. And, high reliable algorithms that can eliminate false-positive and false-negative errors are needed in the watermark extraction process. In this paper, we control coefficients of high frequency band in a DCT domain and compensate brightness histogram for high reliability. As a result, we found that the proposed algorithm guarantee various requirements such as perceptual invisibility with high PSNR values, fragility, high reliability and blind feature. In addition, experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can be used steganographic applications by sufficient capacity of watermark.

This thesis is a summary of the research result about the 20 seconds official trailer requested from the Pusan International Film Festival organizing committee. Since producing digital content is very significant at this moment, I tired to make an official trailer for 13th Pusan International Film Festival by integrating 3D animation with ink-and-wash painting. Motivated by a western-style painter, Shin Chang Sic's painting,' Arirang_HopeⅠ(An Official poster), I got to know how to express ink-and-wash painting by using digital technique and considering ink stick depth, line control and color elements for modeling, shading and rendering stage.
