Ryu, Hosub ; Park, Hanhoon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 18, issue 8, 2015, Pages 901~908
DOI : 10.9717/kmms.2015.18.8.901
Methods of detecting, describing, matching image features, like corners and blobs, have been actively studied as a fundamental step for image processing and computer vision applications. As one of feature description/matching methods, LLAH(Locally Likely Arrangement Hashing) describes image features based on the geometric relationship between their neighbors, and thus is suitable for scenes with poor texture. This paper presents a modified LLAH algorithm, which includes the image features themselves for robustly describing the geometric relationship unlike the original LLAH, and employes a voting-based feature matching scheme that makes feature description much simpler. Then, this paper quantitatively analyzes its performance with synthetic images in the presence of Gaussian noise.

Lee, Kang Gun ; Park, Hyung Kun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 18, issue 8, 2015, Pages 909~914
DOI : 10.9717/kmms.2015.18.8.909
In wireless sensor networks, sensor nodes have a short transmission range and data is transferred from source to destination node using the multi-hop transmission. Sensor nodes are powered by battery and the link qualities are different, and the routing protocol in the wireless sensor network is one of the important technical issues. Multipath routing was proposed to reduce the data congestion and increase data throughput. In the multipath routing, however, each path can be interfered by the other path, and it can aggravate network performance. In this paper, we propose the multipath routing scheme for multi-rate wireless sensor networks. The multipath routing selects transmission paths to minimize transmission delay and path interference.

Kim, Jong Wook ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 18, issue 8, 2015, Pages 915~924
DOI : 10.9717/kmms.2015.18.8.915
With growing popularity of cloud computing services, users can more easily manage massive amount of data by outsourcing them to the cloud, or more efficiently analyse large amount of data by leveraging IT infrastructure provided by the cloud. This, however, brings the security concerns of sensitive data. To provide data security, it is essential to encrypt sensitive data before uploading it to cloud computing services. Although data encryption helps provide data security, it negatively affects the performance of massive data analytics because it forbids the use of index and mathematical operation on encrypted data. Thus, in this paper, we propose a novel algorithm which enables to efficiently process a large amount of encrypted data. In particular, we propose a novel top-k processing algorithm on the massive amount of encrypted data in the cloud computing environments, and verify the performance of the proposed approach with real data experiments.

The frequency of natural disasters because of global warming is gradually increasing, risks of flooding due to typhoon and torrential rain have also increased. Among these causes, the roads are flooded by suddenly torrential rain, and then vehicle and personal injury are happening. In this respect, because of the possibility that immersion of a road may occur in a second, it is necessary to study the rapid data collection and quick response system. Our research proposes a big data analysis system based on the collected information and a variety of system information collection methods for searching flooded road areas by torrential rains. The data related flooded roads are utilized the SNS data, meteorological data and the road link data, etc. And the big data analysis system is implemented the distributed processing system based on the Hadoop platform.

According to growing of the plant cultivation in a greenhouse environment, the demand of a system to control the greenhouse easier has increased. Currently, the methods to control by the mobile App represent the information in a greenhouse environment with a simple numerical data or compose only the contents with a limited degree of freedom. In order to solve these problems, this paper presents a system that can be viewed or controlled greenhouse conditions in near / remote distance using augmented reality and MQTT communication protocol, RTSP media streaming protocol. The proposed method is implemented in Android smartphone environment and acts monitoring the information (temperature, humidity, illuminance) obtained by greenhouse's sensors and transmits the real time greenhouse's video using RTSP in the remote distance, and controls the values of temperature, humidity, illuminance for the greenhouse using the augmented reality in the near distance.

A reader usually spends a lot of time browsing and searching word meaning in a dictionary, internet or smart applications in order to find the unknown words. In this paper, we propose a method to compensate this drawback. The proposed method introduces a vocabulary upon recognizing a word or group of words that was captured by a smart phone camera. Through this proposed method, organizing and editing words that were captured by smart phone, searching the dictionary data using bisection method, listening pronunciation with the use of speech synthesizer, building and editing of vocabulary stored in database are given as the features. A smart phone application for organizing English words was established. The proposed method significantly reduces the organizing time for unknown English words and increases the English learning efficiency.
An Empirical Study on Evaluation Criteria of Projection Mapping Videos in Terms of Public Design
Lee, Young Woo ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 18, issue 8, 2015, Pages 950~959
DOI : 10.9717/kmms.2015.18.8.950
The necessity of an empirical study on how projection mapping videos are evaluated from consumers' point of view has arisen, as they can lead to visual pollution if factors including spatial characteristics around the structure and details of the contents are not taken into consideration. This study aims to evaluate projection mapping videos and elucidate the question on whether evaluation criteria positively influence the satisfaction level or not. Above all, five evaluation criteria including artistry, creativity, identity, immersion and usefulness were deducted and a hypothesis from preceding research "each evaluation criteria will positively(+) influence the satisfaction level of projection mapping video" has been established. In order to test the hypothesis, big domestic department stores which screened projection mapping videos were selected and a verification experiment has been conducted with ordinary citizens as subjects. In the result of the experiment, among the five evaluation criteria, artistry, creativity, and usefulness were chosen, while identity and immersion were dismissed. The result verifies that if useful information is provided in forms of interesting contents produced with distinctive ideas and creative methods, it will satisfy the consumers as attractive public design.

In this paper, we propose a user interface technique based on embedded sensors applying to apps in smart phone. Especially, we implement avata generation application using image filtering technique for photo image in smart phone. In the application, The embedded sensors are used as intuitive user interface to adjust the image filtering effect for making user satisfied effect in real time after the system produced the image filtering effect for avatar. This technique provides not a simple typed method of parameter values adjustment but a new intuitively emotional adjustment method in image filtering applications. The proposed technique can use sound values from embedded mike sensor for adjusting key values of sketch filter effect if the smart phone user produces sound. Similiarly the proposed technique can use coordinate values from embedded acceleration sensor for adjusting masking values of oil painting filter effect and use brightness values from embedded light sensor for adjusting masking values of sharp filter effect. Finally, we implement image filtering application and evaluate efficiency and effectiveness for the proposed technique.

In this paper, we study a vibration bell App which shows waiting sequence numbers by utilizing smartphones to solve an inconveniently long waiting time from ordering to getting foods in restaurants and coffee shops. Unlike existing independently developed hardware and software, the vibration bell App is developed to manage and integrate customer management service, POS service in shops, and group shop management services. The functions of the vibration bell App include two-way communications based on NFC- issuing waiting sequence numbers and electronic coupon, showing event information, and transferring user information. Furthermore, the user's personal information is minimized by recognizing the pre-existing information of the user's smartphone. Replacing the shop's vibration bell system with the vibration bell APP, the shops can reduce the cost of construction and maintenance by up to 1/10, compared to the cost of for existing vibration bell systems. Moreover, the customer's preference and current sales trend can be easily figured out. Thus, it will have a great effect on the future marketing strategies.

Most of cultural area which people enjoy and consume is kitsch culture, though the culture is barely acknowledged. In this multimedia era, people create, publish and enjoy contents of 'webtoon(web+cartoon)', which is relatively faster and more convenient to enjoy comparing to published cartoon. Contrarily to its physical growth, the webtoon shows difficulty in advancing with other genres, is full of irritative factors and contents, and has tough time to become more sophisticated one. This study derived characteristics of kitsch in webtoon, suggested the way of webtoon as an art by analyzing conditions and usage motivation of webtoon. The conditions of kitsch are uniformity of mass consumption, popular vein, catharsis, vicarious satisfaction, immediate feedback-requiring image flood, and reproduction of techniques. The usage motivations of webtoon are studied as pursuit of information, entertainment, relaxation, socialization, convenience, and effectiveness. Usage motivation factors in webtoon and kitsch culture are almost identical. Contrary to its past of being underestimated and vulgarly considered, kitsch is acknowledged as an 'kitsch art'. By studying the process of becoming an art, the study has its purpose to suggest the experimental and developing way to make webtoon be acknowledged as 'webtoon art'.

In 2013, Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film was granted to Walt Disney's short animation,
(2012). With various aspects of its excellence, I focus on the very effective use of digital lightings and underscores for storytelling as its success factors. In this respect, this paper aims at analyzing the roles of the visual factors, especially tone, contrast, etc. created by lightings, and audio factors, especially underscores, in the film's story development. I find that
can be characterized by the well-built story structure with distinct three acts. The main stream of the story is expressed with the overall mood that is created by the fine adjustments of brightness of the main light, and contrast. And the direction and the intensity of the lighting successfully describe the emotions of the characters in each scene. In addition, I find that properly chosen and positioned underscores make the development of the story more dynamic and more harmonized.
