An Opened EDI Document Management System for Electronic Commerces
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 1~12
EDI is being considered as a new way for exchange business data in the form of electronic document, aiming the paperless transaction in business-to-business commerce. However, only a few enterprises select and practically use EDI accepts the closed and complicated method based on exclusive protocol for electronic document exchange. There, second, is insufficient regulation and system that support it. Last, the cost for operating is too high. In this paper, Open EDI Document Information Management System (OEIMS) was designed for solving the problem that mentioned above. We represented exchange document in code from as XML DTD. OEIMS that makers feasible to transfer their document through the web with low cost and, manage and search the information more efficiently and effectively using object-oriented database. We suggest OEIMS that provide efficiency to reposit and manage a system by modulized design of structural feature from EDI unlike other systems.
Performance Evaluation of VBR MPEG Video Storage and Retrieval Schemes in a VOD System
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 13~28
In a VOD(Vide-On-Demand) system, video data are generally stored in magnetic disk array. In order to provide real-time requirement for data retrieval, video streams must be delivered continuously to the clients such that the delivery of continuous media can be guaranteed in a timely fashion. Compared to the increased performance of processors and networks, the performance of magnetic disk systems have improved only modestly. In order to improve the performance of storage system, disk array system is proposed and used. The array system improves I/O performance by placing disks in parallel and retrieving data concurrently. In this paper, two approaches are considered in order to access the video data in a VOD system, which are CTL(Constant Time Length) and CDL(Constant Data Length) access policies. Disk scheduling policies are also classified into the two categories and compared in terms of the maximum allowable video streams with different degrees of disk array synchronization, under the mixed environments in which both data access policy and disk scheduling policy are considered. Among the compared scheduling policies, LOOK was shown to have the best performance. In terms of degree of disk synchronization, more gain was achieved with large degree of synchronization. In comparisons of performance of CTL and CDL, CTL was proved to have a little superior performance in terms of number of maximum allowable streams.
An Efficient Image Description Method and Content-based Image Retrieval using Circular Scanning Pattern
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 29~36
This paper proposes an efficient image description method for image retrieval using circular scanning pattern. Therefore, we place the origin of the circular scanning pattern on center point of an image and describe spatial color features of the image using the pattern. The features are Circular Dominant Color, Circular Color Texture, and Circular Color Variation Plot. By the method we can describe color and spatial information of the image at a time, efficiently. Therefore, we can reduce the computational expense and memory usage needed to index the image more than the conventional one does.
Estimation of Surface Spectral Reflectance using A Population with Similar Colors
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 37~45
The studies to estimate the surface spectral reflectance of an object have received widespread attention using the multi-spectral camera system. However, the multi-spectral camera system requires the additional color filter according to increment of the channel and system complexity is increased by multiple capture. Thus, this paper proposes an algorithm to reduce the estimation error of surface spectral reflectance with the conventional 3-band RGB camera. In the proposed method, adaptive principal components for each pixel are calculated by renewing the population of surface reflectances and the adaptive principal components can reduce estimation error of surface spectral reflectance of current pixel. To evaluate performance of the proposed estimation method, 3-band principal component analysis, 5-band wiener estimation method, and the proposed method are compared in the estimation experiment with the Macbeth Color Checker. As a result, the proposed method showed a lower mean square error between the estimated and the measured spectra compared to the conventional 3-band principal component analysis method and represented a similar or advanced estimation performance compared to the 5-band wiener method.
Boll's Spectral Subtraction Algorithm by New Voice Activity Detection
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 46~55
In this paper, a new voice activity detection method estimating SNR of enhanced speech with extended spectral subtraction (ESS) is proposed. Voice activity detection is performed by putting an second Wiener filter behind an Wiener filter used in the ESS to estimate speech and noise power of output signal of first Wiener filter. The proposed voice activity detection method does not require many computational loads and performs well under severe input SNR. Boll's spectral substraction algorithm with proposed voice activity detection was compared to ESS under several noise environment having different time-frequency distributions. During speech and non-speech activity, performance of Boll's spectral substraction algorithm with proposed voice activity detection is superior to that of ESS.
New Speech Enhancement Method using Psychoacoustic Criteria
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 56~66
The spectral subtraction algorithm using a criterion based on the human perception has been recently developed. The speech processed with Virag's algorithm sounds more pleasant to a human listener than those obtained by the classical methods. However, Virag's algorithm requires a robust voice activity detector (VAD). In the ESS (extended spectral subtraction) algorithm without VAD, the residual noise becomes more noticeable as the SNR decrease. In this paper we propose a new speech enhancement method, the combination of Wiener filter and spectral subtraction based on noise masking characteristics in the human auditory system. There is no need of VAD because the noise can be successively updated even during speech activity using Wiener filter. The adjustment of the subtraction parameter based on the masking threshold makes the residual noise inaudible. The proposed method has been compared with conventional spectral subtraction algorithms. Objective and subjective evaluation of the proposed system is performed with several noise types having different time-frequency distributions. The application of objective measures, the study of the speech spectrograms, as well as subjective listening tests, confirm that the enhanced speech with proposed algorithm is more pleasant to a human listener.
Facial Regions Detection Using the Color and Shape Information in Color Still Images
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 67~74
In this paper, we propose a face detection algorithm using the color and shape information in color still images. The proposed algorithm is only applied to chrominance components(Cb and Cr) in order to reduce the variations of lighting condition in YCbCr color space. Input image is segmented by pixels with skin-tone color and then the segmented mage follows the morphological filtering an geometric correction to eliminate noise and simplify the segmented regions in facial candidate regions. Multiple facial regions in input images can be isolated by connected component labeling. Moreover tilting facial regions can be detected by extraction of second moment-based ellipse features.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 75~81
A EBCOT(Embedded Block Coding with Optimized Truncation) is image compression codec using in JPEG2000, currently the new standard for still image coding. this paper proposes multi-channel video transfer system with EBCOT using a single codec to transfer video to difference band-width channel. This parer testify that compression rate of EBCOT higher than ordinary VLC using RLC and Huffman codec and apply EBCOT to JPEG structure. this structure increases parallelism and error resilience using black coding method. finally it looks into difficult to apply MPEG structure to multi channel video transfer system, and proposes solution using EBCOT.
Embedded One Chip Computer Design for Hardware Implementation of Genetic Algorithm
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 4, issue 1, 2001, Pages 82~90
Genetic Algorithm(GA) has known as a method of solving NP problem in various applications. Since a major drawback of the GA is that it needs a long computation time, the hardware implementation of Genetic Algorithm is focused on in recent studies. This paper proposes a new type of embedded one chip computer fort Hardware Implementation of Genetic Algorithm. The proposed embedded one chip computer consists of 16 Bit CPU care and hardware of genetic algorithm. In contrast to conventional hardware oriented GA which is dependent on main computer in the process of GA, the proposed embedded one chip computer is independent on main computer. Conventional hardware GA uses the fixed length of chromosome but the proposed embedded one chip computer uses the variable length of chromosome by employing the efficient 16 bit Pipeline Unit. Experimental results show that the proposed one chip computer is applicable to the design of evolvable hardware for Random NRZ bit synchronization circuit.
