A Disk Load Balancing Technique based on The Access Counter for Efficiently Providing VCR Functions in Disk Array Based VOD Servers
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 477~487
In a VOD system, it is desirable to provide the user with interactive VCR functions such as fast-forward and fast-backward. Typically, these functions can be implemented using the segment interleaving technique in disk away based VOD servers. But the segment interleaving nay not ensure QoS of users because of the concentrated load within some disks. In this paper, we propose an efficient load balancing technique for evenly distributing the retrieval requests across the disks. The proposed technique maintains an access counter in each disk, which has the number of disk accesses. The fast-forward/backward can be achieved by choosing a segment to be accessed from the disk with the minimum number among the access counters. We conduct simulation experiments and then show that our proposed technique outperforms the previous ones.
Design and Implementation of An MPEG-4 Dynamic Service Framework
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 488~493
MPEG-4 movies are composed of several media objects, organized in a hierarchical fashion. Those media objects are served to the clients as elementary streams. To play the movie, client players compose the elementary streams according to the meta- information called the scene graph. The meta-information streams are delivered as BIFS and OD elementary stream. Using dynamically generated BIFS and OD streams, we can provide a service something differs from traditional file services. For example, we can insert weather or stock information into the bottom of the screen while an existing movie was played in the screen. In this paper, we propose a dynamic service framework and dynamic server. Dynamic service framework is an object-oriented framework dynamically generating BIFS and OD streams based on the external DB information. Dynamic server provides a GUI for the server management and interface for registering dynamic services. In this framework, the dynamic service has the same interface as a file service. So, a dynamic service is considered as a file service by clients and other services.
A Design and Implementation of Volume Rendering Program based on 3D Sampling
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 494~504
Volume rendering is a method of displaying volumetric data as a sequence two-dimensional image. Because this algorithm has an advantage of visualizing structures within objects, it has recently been used to analyze medical images i.e, MRI, PET, and SPECT. In this paper. we suggested a method for creating images easily from sampled volumetric data and applied the interpolation method to medical images. Additionally, we implemented and applied two kinds of interpolation methods to improve the image quality, linear interpolation and cubic interpolation at the sampling stage. Subsequently, we compared the results of volume rendered data using a transfer function. We anticipate a significant contribution to diagnosis through image reconstruction using a volumetric data set, because volume rendering techniques of medical images are the result of 3-dimensional data.
A Content-Based Image Classification using Neural Network
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 505~514
In this Paper, we propose a method of content-based image classification using neural network. The images for classification ate object images that can be divided into foreground and background. To deal with the object images efficiently, object region is extracted with a region segmentation technique in the preprocessing step. Features for the classification are texture and shape features extracted from wavelet transformed image. The neural network classifier is constructed with the extracted features and the back-propagation learning algorithm. Among the various texture features, the diagonal moment was more effective. A test with 300 training data and 300 test data composed of 10 images from each of 30 classes shows correct classification rates of 72.3% and 67%, respectively.
Hybrid Method using Frame Selection and Weighting Model Rank to improve Performance of Real-time Text-Independent Speaker Recognition System based on GMM
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 512~522
In this paper, we propose a hybrid method which is mixed with frame selection and weighting model rank method, based on GMM(gaussian mixture model), for real-time text-independent speaker recognition system. In the system, maximum likelihood estimation was used for GMM parameter optimization, and maximum likelihood was used for recognition basically Proposed hybrid method has two steps. First, likelihood score was calculated with speaker models and test data at frame level, and the difference is calculated between the biggest likelihood value and second. And then, the frame is selected if the difference is bigger than threshold. The second, instead of calculated likelihood, weighting value is used for calculating total score at each selected frame. Cepstrum coefficient and regressive coefficient were used as feature parameters, and the database for test and training consists of several data which are collected at different time, and data for experience are selected randomly In experiments, we applied each method to baseline system, and tested. In speaker recognition experiments, proposed hybrid method has an average of 4% higher recognition accuracy than frame selection method and 1% higher than W method, implying the effectiveness of it.

Kim, Sung-Ill ; Kim, Nag-Cheol ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 523~529
The present study describes neural networks for stereoscopic vision, which are applied to identifying human speech. In speech recognition based on stereoscopic vision neural networks (SVNN), the similarities are first obtained by comparing input vocal signals with standard models. They are then given to a dynamic process in which both competitive and cooperative processes are conducted among neighboring similarities. Through the dynamic processes, only one winner neuron is finally detected. In a comparative study, the two-layered SVNN was 7.7% higher in recognition accuracies than the hidden Markov model (HMM). From the evaluation results, it was noticed that SVNN outperformed the existing HMM recognizer.
A Web Note using VML : MyNote
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 530~537
Although a type of Web-based education has increased continuously, it has provided an environment that students use textbooks which are forms of homepage, make a note of lecture on Web browser, save the contents of note and use them again. Therefore, this thesis proposes a web note, MyNote, that students draw lines and write notes about the lecture using VML and DHTML on Web. Here, the contents of the note are saved in database with a form of text-based VML made dynamically using ASP. The document used with teaching material is downloaded from Web server to Web client and the content of VML is done from database. Using MyNote, students have their own libraries on Web. The content of note Is saved and printed on Web, and learners can relearn because they can review the content.
A Study on Construction of Training System for Improvement of Learning Achievement in The Web-Based Distance Education
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 538~551
Even though the distance education via Web has a great advantage to overcome time and space, its problem that the management of trainees is not efficient compared with classroom and group education. This problem is a great obstacle to the objects and achievement standards of distance education, giving controversial arguments to the advocators of distance education. Distance educators need to monitor the trainees 'participation and responses continuously and offer appropriate feedback to the trainees. However, the existing distance education system only focuses on teaching and teaming activities, and as a result, the efficient management function of distance education is not available. Accordingly, the study attempts to find out the appropriate managing elements of distance teacher training in order to effectively achieve the goals of teacher training and the efficient management of distance education. Also, it proposes distance teacher training system that offers appropriate feedback to trainees, applying the derived elements of distance teacher training to the training processes. To verify the efficiency of the system, hypotheses on related items of distance teacher education and learning types are suggested, and the achievement of learning and its relations are investigated through questionnaire of learning types.
A Digital Watermarking of 3D Geometric Model STL for Rapid Prototyping System
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 552~561
In this paper, a new watermarking algorithm for STL files which contains 3D geometric information as triangular facets is proposed. STL files are widely used in rapid prototyping industry as a standard interchange format. The proposed algorithm inserts multi-bit watermark information into the surface normal vector and vertex description area of STL file without distorting the original 3D geometric information. According to the watermark bits, the position of normal vector and the direction of vertex sequence are modulated. The proposed algorithm is robust to the attack of changing the order of the triangular meshes. In addition, the invisibility requirement is also satisfied. Experiment results show that the proposed algorithm can encode and decode watermark bits into the various STL files without any distortion of 3D shape.
Design and Implementation of Web Based Intranet Management Report Publisher
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 562~570
In this paper, we design and implement web based Intranet Management Report Publisher (IMRP) that generates automatically daily, weekly, monthly and yearly report for configuration, performance and fault management of the Intranet. Intranet managers can analyze status of the Intranet with IMRP easier The IMRP publishes the Intranet management reports based on TINA (Telecommunication Information Networking Architecture) using CORBA(Common Object Request Broker Architecture). The advantages of this architecture are to protect the Intranet management system by being connected to the User Agent program and to raise the efficiency of maintenance by modifying only the User Agent program as accessing part of the Intranet management system is needed to change.
Modified Skyscraper Broadcasting Schemes for Periodic Broadcasting with VBR Video
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 571~581
Many periodic broadcasting schemes for near VoD systems are proposed. Recently non-uniform segmentation schemes have been used to develop periodic broadcasting techniques for near VoD. These techniques give significant reductions in start-up latency as compared with more conventional uniform segmentation. However, all of these schemes assume that the videos are CBR-encoded. Since a CBR-encoded video has a target average tate than an VBR encoding, there is potential to obtain further Performance Improvements by using VBR videos. Unfortunately, however, the studies concerning broadcasting with VBR video ate rare and the existing techniques have the problem of virtual loss. In this paper, we modify Skyscraper Broadcasting Scheme for broadcasting with VBR videos which is a representative non-uniform segmentation scheme lot CBR videos. A VBR video can be transmitted at constant bit rate (CBR) by using prefetching. With this idea we propose Modified Skyscraper Broadcasting Schemes for VBR videos and make performance evaluation by simulation. We show that our schemes have a better performance than Skyscraper Broadcasting Scheme for CBR videos.
A New Receiver Combining Antenna Array Receiver and Successive Interference Cancelling Multiuser Detector in DS/CDMA Systems
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 582~589
In this paper, we propose a new method that combines antenna array, which employs any beamforming algorithm, and successive interference cancelling multiuser detector which improves the performance of the receiver and analyse its performance. Antenna away receivers can improve the performance by spatially discriminating among the users and reducing the multiple access interference. But the performance of the receivers degrades when the difference of the direction of arrival of the users are too small. Many interference cancelling multiuser detectors have been suggested for DS/CDMA systems which have low complexity for their performance. In this paper, we show how to mitigate such a degradation by combining successive interference cancelling multiuser detector.
A Partition Mining Method of Sequential Patterns using Suffix Checking
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 5, issue 5, 2002, Pages 590~598
For efficient sequential pattern mining, we need to reduce the cost to generate candidate patterns and searching space for the generated ones. Although Apriori-like methods like GSP are simple, they have some problems such as generating of many candidate patterns and repetitive searching of a large database. PrefixSpan, which was proposed as an alternative of GSP, constructs the prefix projected databases which are stepwise partitioned in the mining process. It can reduce the searching space to estimate the support of candidate patterns, but the construction cost of projected databases is still high. To solve these problems, we proposed SuffixSpan(Suffix checked Sequential Pattern mining) as a new sequential pattern mining method. It generates a small size of candidate pattern sets using partition property and suffix property at a low cost and also uses 1-prefix projected databases as the searching space in order to reduce the cost of estimating the support of candidate patterns.
