Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 576~582
Because of today's rapid growth of digital contents market and many benefits of electronic book, many people have considerable interest in E-book. Furthermore multifarious consortiums take an active part in standardization of I-book, and many E-book tools have been provided by software manufactures all over the world. E-book tools include editor for production of E-Book, viewer for reading, and the like. Especially in E-book viewer, annotation function has to be Included to put arrangement, summation, recording, comment, emphasis and after comprehension to practical use. In this paper, a E-book viewer with annotation is designed according to the specifications of EBKS, Korean standard. The proposed viewer is aimed to implement in PDA with embedded Linux, but developed in Windows 2000 platform. Because development environment and application environment are different each other, Qt-Library and cross-compiler are used for cross-platform development. The viewer support various functions such as adjusting of font size, hypertext linking, retrieval of specific word, and so forth. And in addition to these basic functions, annotation function is designed for the viewer, which can be used for re-usage and sharing of important information.
Database Construction for Design of the Components Software by Using an Incremental Update Propagation
Oh, Am-Suk ; Kwon, Oh-Hyun ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 583~593
Engineering design applications require the support of long transactions in cooperative environments. The problem of the existing copy/update/merge approaches is that the partial effects of a committed transaction may be not part of the merged version. This paper introduces a new cooperative transaction model, which allows updates to be progressively notified or propagated into other transactions accessing the same object. To support incremental update propagation and notification, we use the term dynamic dependency to define the intertransaction dependency relationships among all the objects checked out from the public database. Consistency in multiple copies of the same object is achieved by a two-phase delta-merge protocol. Our model provides a synchronization of cooperative updates performed in several workspaces without using locking mechanisms.

Park, Jae-Young ; Kim, Nak-Bin ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 594~600
In this paper, we propose a detection method for facial features in color images with various backgrounds and face poses. To begin with, the proposed method extracts face candidacy region from images with various backgrounds, which have skin-tone color and complex objects, via the color and edge information of face. And then, by using the elliptical shape property of face, we correct a rotation, scale, and tilt of face region caused by various poses of head. Finally, we verify the face using features of face and detect facial features. In our experimental results, it is shown that accuracy of detection is high and the proposed method can be used in pose-invariant face recognition system effectively
The VLR Overflow Control Scheme considering Mobility of Mobile Users in Wireless Mobile Networks
Oh, Sun-Jin ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 601~609
In wireless mobile networks, the service area is partitioned into several registration areas (RAs). Every RA is associated with a mobility database called Visitor Location Register (VLR). The VLR is used to achieve the location management of the mobile terminals. When a mobile terminal enters a new RA, the VLR stores the current location information of the mobile terminal before serving any mobile services. At that time, if the VLR is full, the registration procedure fails, and the system can not deliver services to the mobile user under the existing cellular technology To resolve this problem, we propose a VLR overflow control scheme considering mobility of mobile users to accomodate incoming users during VLR overflow. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by an analytic model in terms of costs for the location search and the location update, and compared with those of the overflow control scheme proposed by Lin.
Cellular Automata and It's Applications
Lee, Jun-Seok ; Cho, Hyun-Ho ; Rhee, Kyung-Hyune ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 610~619
This paper presents a concept of cellular automata and a modular exponentiation algorithm and implementation of a basic EIGamal encryption by using cellular automata. Nowadays most of modular exponentiation algorithms are implemented by a linear feedback shift register(LFSR), but its structure has disadvantage which is difficult to implement an operation scheme when the basis is changed frequently The proposed algorithm based on a cellular automata in this paper can overcome this shortcomings, and can be effectively applied to the modular exponentiation algorithm by using the characteristic of the parallelism and flexibility of cellular automata. We also propose a new fast multiplier algorithm using the normal basis representation. A new multiplier algorithm based on normal basis is quite fast than the conventional algorithms using standard basis. This application is also applicable to construct operational structures such as multiplication, exponentiation and inversion algorithm for EIGamal cryptosystem.
An Anonymous Fingerprinting Scheme with a Robust Asymmetry
Park, Jae-Gwi ; Park, Ji-Hwan ; Kouichi Sakurai ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 620~629
Fingerprinting schemes are techniques applied to protect the copyright on digital goods. These enable the merchants to identify the source of illegal redistribution. Let us assume the following situations connectedly happen: As a beginning, buyer who bought digital goods illegally distributed it, next the merchant who found it revealed identity of the buyer/traitor, then the goods is illegally distributed again. After this, we describe it as“The second illegal redistribution”. In most of anonymous fingerprinting, upon finding a redistributed copy, a merchant extracts the buyer's secret information from the copy and identifies a traitor using it. Thus the merchant can know the traitor's secret information (digital fingerprints) after identification step. The problem of the second illegal distribution is that there is a possibility of the merchant's fraud and the buyer's abuse: that is a dishonest employee of the merchant might just as well have redistributed the copy as by the buyer, or the merchant as such may want to gain money by wrongly claiming that the buyer illegally distributed it once more. The buyer also can illegally redistribute the copy again. Thus if the copy turns up, one cannot really assign responsibility to one of them. In this paper, we suggest solution of this problem using two-level fingerprinting. As a result, our scheme protects the buyer and the merchant under any conditions in sense that (1) the merchant can obtain means to prove to a third party that the buyer redistributed the copy. (2) the buyer cannot worry about being branded with infamy as a traitor again later if he never distribute it.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 650~657
We describe a scheme for developing character-based interface within the context of an agent-based tutoring system in the Web environment. The ideas in this paper stem from original work representing aspects of human emotion in tutoring computer models, where may provide mote natural ways for students to communicate with digital learning materials. The proposed system model is a set of software services that enable developers to incorporate interactive animated characters into their Web pages designed for on-line lectures. The prototypical application is developed and shown for validating the applicability and the effectiveness of this model in real tutoring settings.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 668~675
Now a days many industries and bigger organisation (Indian Railways, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd.) are facing difficulties in implementing the new technology because of non-availability of fully trained staff. Also for the employed technical and other staff lot of resistance management has to face to get them trained for adoption of new technology. There are also very less organisations who can design effective training programmes and at the same time develop course material specially multimedia packages and computer base training (CBT) which can satisfy the need of different target groups of industries. Indian Railways was also facing similar situation while implementing the Air Brake System technology In Indian Railways. TTTI Bhopal took that challenge and designed, developed and trained Indian Railways trainer for implementation of the package on different target group. The present paper offers a case study on the same.
Adaptive Hypermedia for eLearning: An Implementation Framework
Dutta, Diptendu ; Majumdar, Shyamal ; Majumdar, Chandan ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 676~684
eLearning can be defined as an approach to teaching and teaming that utilises Internet technologies to communicate and collaborate in an educational context. This includes technology that supplements traditional classroom training with web-based components and learning environments where the educational process is experienced online. The use of hypertext as an educational tool has a very rich history. The advent of the internet and one of its major application, the world wide web (WWW), has given a tremendous boost to the theory and practice of hypermedia systems for educational purposes. However, the web suffers from an inability to satisfy the heterogeneous needs of a large number of users. For example, web-based courses present the same static teaming material to students with widely differing knowledge of the subject. Adaptive hypermedia techniques can be used to improve the adaptability of eLearning. In this paper we report an approach to the design a unified implementation framework suitable for web-based eLearning that accommodates the three main dimensions of hypermedia adaptation: content, navigation, and presentation. The framework externalises the adaptation strategies using XML notation. The separation of the adaptation strategies from the source code of the eLearning software enables a system using the framework to quickly implement a variety of adaptation strategies. This work is a part of our more general ongoing work on the design of a framework for adaptive content delivery. parts of the framework discussed in this paper have been imulemented in a commercial eLearning engine.
Re-engineering Adult Education Programme-an Online Learning Curricular Perspective
Mathai, K.J. ; Karaulia, D.S. ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 685~697
The Web based multimedia programmes/courses are becoming widely available in recent years. Most of these courses focus on Behaviorist way of learning, which does not promote deep learning in any way. For Adults this approach further incapacitated, as it does not satisfy Andragogical needs. The search for Constructivist way of learning through the web applied to Indian conditions led to need for developing a curriculum development approach that would promote construction of knowledge through web based collaboration. This paper attempts to reengineer existing curriculum development processes and lays out a framework of‘Problem Based Online Learning (PBOL)’curriculum design. In this context, entire curriculum development life cycle is evolved and explained. This is a part of doctoral work (Ph.D), which is in progress and being undertaken by K.James Mathai, and guided of Dr.D.S.Karaulia.
Surface Approximation Utilizing Orientation of Local Surface
Ko, Myeong-Cheol ; Sohn, Won-Sung ; Choy, Yoon-Chul ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 698~706
The primary goal of surface approximation is to reduce the degree of deviation of the simplified surface from the original surface. However it is difficult to define the metric that can measure the amount of deviation quantitatively. Many of the existing studies analogize it by using the change of the scalar quantity before and after simplification. This approach makes a lot of sense in the point that the local surfaces with small scalar are relatively less important since they make a low impact on the adjacent areas and thus can be removed from the current surface. However using scalar value alone there can exist many cases that cannot compute the degree of geometric importance of local surface. Especially the perceptual geometric features providing important clues to understand an object, in our observation, are generally constructed with small scalar value. This means that the distinguishing features can be removed in the earlier stage of the simplification process. In this paper, to resolve this problem, we present various factors and their combination as the metric for calculating the deviation error by introducing the orientation of local surfaces. Experimental results indicate that the surface orientation has an important influence on measuring deviation error and the proposed combined error metric works well retaining the relatively high curvature regions on the object's surface constructed with various and complex curvatures.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 714~722
Men's clothing has been recently giving higher market shares to the ready-made clothes rather than the custom-tailored clothes. With many active studies on the human body and design, the ready-made clothes win popularity due to their rapid repairing, various design, and cheap prices, though they are not perfect suitable for some people. Therefore the ready-made has a weak point unable to consider all of the individual physical characteristics. However the custom-tailored clothes ate able to make clothing perfectly suitable lot their customers, though they require longer time-taking and expensive costs. In this context, this paper is design and implementation an automatic design edit system to provide a rapid and cheap service for customers on the ground of the custom-tailored clothes. In other words, this paper intended to use computer systems lot rapidly and precisely providing design dependent on the individual physical characteristics including a distorted bodies, types of the leg, and a height of the shoulder. To do so, the paper using not only studies on the human body and the custom-tailored clothes but also technical know-hows planned design for each individual body by LISP language and automatically process the design through CAD system. Consequently, the rapid and precise processing has reduced inventories and production costs, leading to supplying high quality clothes at lower prices.

Efficient Dynamic Object-Oriented Program Slicing
Park, Soon-Hyung ; Park, Man-Gon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 736~745
Traditional slicing techniques make slices through dependence graphs. They also improve the accuracy of slices. However, traditional slicing techniques require many vertices and edges in order to express a data communication link because they are based on static slicing techniques. Therefore the graph becomes very complicated, and size of the slices is larger. We propose the representation of a dynamic object-oriented program dependence graph so as to process the slicing of object-oriented programs that is composed of related programs in order to process certain jobs. We also propose an efficient slicing algorithm using the relations of relative tables in order to compute dynamic slices of object-oriented programs. Consequently, the efficiency of the proposed efficient dynamic object-oriented program dependence graph technique is also compared with the dependence graph techniques discussed previously As a result, this is certifying that an efficient dynamic object-oriented program dependence graph is more efficient in comparison with the traditional object-oriented dependence graphs and dynamic object-oriented program dependence graph.
An Effective Relevance Feedbackbased Image Retrieval using Color and Texture
Jung, Sung-Hwan ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 6, issue 4, 2003, Pages 746~752
In this paper, we proposed an image retrieval system with a simple and effective relevance feedback, called RAP(Reward and Punishment) algorithm. First, color and texture features were extracted from the images. Next, the extracted feature values were used for image retrieval in various forms. We applied the relevance feedback to the initial retrieved images from the image retrieval system, and compared its result with that of the conventional system. In the experiment using the test image database of 16 class 512 images, the proposed system showed the better retrieval performance of about 10∼l7 % than that of the conventional INRIA system in each relevance feedback step.
