Optimal Configurations of Multidimensional Path Indexes for the Efficient Execution of Object-Oriented Queries
Lee, Jong-Hak ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 859~876
This paper presents optimal configurations of multidimensional path indexes (MPIs) for the efficient execution of object-oriented queries in object databases. MPI uses a multidimensional index structure for efficiently supporting nested predicates that involve both nested attribute and class hierarchies, which are not supported by the nested attribute index using one-dimensional index structure such as
-tree. In this paper, we have analyzed the MPIs in the framework of complex queries, containing conjunctions of nested predicates, each one involving a path expression having target classes and domain classes substitution. First of all, we have considered MPI operations caused by updating of object databases, and the use of the MPI in the case of a query containing a single nested predicate. And then, we have considered the use of the MPIs in the framework of more general queries containing nested predicates over both overlapping and non-overlapping paths. The former are paths having common subpaths, while the latter have no common subpaths.
Robust Feature Selection and Shot Change Detection Method Using the Neural Networks
Hong, Seung-Bum ; Hong, Gyo-Young ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 877~885
In this paper, we propose an enhancement shot change detection method using the neural net and the robust feature selection out of multiple features. The previous shot change detection methods usually used single feature and fixed threshold between consecutive frames. However, contents such as color, shape, background, and texture change simultaneously at shot change points in a video sequence. Therefore, in this paper, we detect the shot changes effectively using robust features, which are supplementary each other, rather than using single feature. In this paper, we use the typical CART (classification and regression tree) of data mining method to select the robust features, and the backpropagation neural net to determine the threshold of the each selected features. And to evaluation the performance of the robust feature selection, we compare the proposed method to the PCA(principal component analysis) method of the typical feature selection. According to the experimental result. it was revealed that the performance of our method had better that than the PCA method.
Dynamic Allocation Method of CPU Bandwidth for Hard Real-Time Task and Multimedia Task Based on MPEG Video Stream
Kim, Jin-Hwan ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 886~895
In this paper, we propose the dynamic allocation scheme of the CPU bandwidth to efficiently integrate and schedule these tasks in the same system, where multimedia tasks and hard real-time tasks can coexist simultaneously. Hard real-time tasks are guaranteed based on worst case execution times, whereas multimedia tasks modeled as soft real-time tasks are served based on mean parameters. This paper describes a server-based allocation scheme for assigning the CPU resource to two types of tasks. Especially for MPEG video streams, we show how to dynamically control the fraction of the CPU bandwidth allocated to each multimedia task. The primary purpose of the proposed method is to minimize the mean tardiness of multimedia tasks while satisfying the timing constraints of hard real-time tasks present in the system. We showed through simulations that the tardiness experienced by multimedia tasks under the proposed allocation scheme is much smaller than that experienced by using other scheme.

Kim, Jae-Won ; Sohn, Dong-Chul ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 896~904
In this paper, We present an efficient variable rate speech coder for spectral efficiency and packet processing technique for packet loss compensation of a voice codec with 10msec frame in VoIP service. Through disconnecting the users from the spectral resource during silence interval of about 60% period, a variable rate voice coder based on a voice activity detection(VAD) can increase spectral gain by two times. The performance of the method was analyzed by variation of detected voice activity factor and degraded speech frame ratio under various background noise level, and compared those of G.729B of ITU-T 8kbps standard speech codec. A method to compensate lost packets utilized addition of recovery data to a main stream and error concealment scheme for speech quality enhancement, the performance is verified by reconstructed speech quality. The proposed scheme can achieve spectral gain by two times or enhance speech quality by 3dB through reserved bandwidth of VAD. Therefore, the proposed method can enhance a spectral efficiency or speech quality of VoIP.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 905~912
It is a study LVMPD to solve the fairness problem of inter-session shared bandwidth. Whenever congestion occurs in one session, the highest layer is dropped. Also the highest layer of other sessions in non-congestion is dropped by iner-session fairness. While there is spare bandwidth, receivers of session in non-congestion can't use bandwidth efficiently. In this paper, we proposed a distribution method to use efficiently spare bandwidth that occurred by inter-session fairness. In our method, we considered the highest layer those receivers receiving and the higher layer those receivers requesting. The sender assigns the packet-deleting priority to packets when congestion occurs in receivers, and sets layer add/drop flag when receivers of session in non-congestion request the higher layer. The switch deletes packets with packet-deleting priority and transfers packets with layer add/drop flag for session in non-congestion. Therefore receivers of session in non-congestion can add the higher layer. In experimental results, it was known that proposed algorithm use the inter-session shared bandwidth more effectively compared with already known method.
A Study on Steganography Using Cartoon Image
Park, Young-Ran ; Park, Ji-Hwan ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 913~921
Steganography is a kind of data hiding which can hide secret information to digital media. It is performed so that another person does not recognize any information and make secret communication between each other. Specially, it is not easy to hide secret information without being visually recognized in scanned text image or cartoon image etc. In this paper, we propose an improved method that can embed a large quantity of secret information in a binary image without noticeable artifacts. Binary cartoon image is divided into block of 3-by-3 sizes. Secret information is embedded by using run-length of 8-neighborhood pixels except for the center pixel of the block. To improve the embedding capacity, we embed it into center pixel under to some condition.

Park, Young-Ho ; Lee, Kyung-Hyune ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 922~933
In recent years, peer-to-peer network have a greate deal of attention for distributed computing or collaborative application, and work of ID-based public key systems have been focusing on the area of cryptography. In this paper, we propose ID-based group key management protocols for secure communication in autonomous peer group. Each member obtains his public/private key pair derived from his identification string from Private Key Generator. No central server participates in group key management protocol instead, all group members share the burden of group key management by the collaboration of themselves, so that our scheme avoids the single point of failure problem. In addition, our scheme considers the nature of dynamic peer group such as frequent joining and leaving of a member.

In this paper, we propose cookie protection-key management system for cookie protection and maintain separate cookie protection-key of each user. We provide integrity, confidentiality, and user authentication of cookie by using registered cookie protection-key and applying encryption techniques. And, we use the technique for hiding the URL of an internal document to a user to minimize the problem of its exposure. When this system is applied to the intranet of an enterprise, it will be able to provide a security to cookie and minimize the problem of internal document exposure by an internal user.

Kim, Kyung-Deok ; Lee, Sang-Woon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 944~955
The modern society as a high-level information-oriented society lays a great emphasis on lifelong education. It emphasizes all the learners' creative learning ability and various teaching-learning methods as well. We need the self-directed learning to meet these requirements, and one of the solutions is the self-directed teaching-learning process employing the web. Though many educators, so far, developed a number of teaching materials, they are no more than web-based teaching materials for simple learning activities or simple item-bank systems. So, this paper suggests an problem-solving based and self-directed learning system on web in order to overcome such simplicities, and it shows design and implementation of the system. Suggested learning system enables learners to get thinking skill though self-directed control of learning level after they learn the basic concepts and principles on the web as self-directed learning. For example, the system was applied to mathematics education for a middle school students. It supports a test of questions chosen from the item bank in a self-directed way, and helps learners to understand their learning levels for themselves and to solve their questions through on-line discussions with their instructor. The system can also be helpful in improving the learners' learning effects by sharing mutual information through the data room or the Q&A between learners and learners or between learners and instructors.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 956~966
The Korean animation has enjoyed the brisk formation and establishment of its world-class infra for the last several years without unified titles or concepts, under the name of a national strategic project in the age of digital image. It also enjoys its new evaluation as digital animation that it's one of the greatest money making business in the non-education and frivolous culture and has the closest relations with the modern time. A great portion of popular image media has been taken by animation for the last 30 years. In this paper we propose a motion algorithm using an animation technology. It was developed for education purposed and accessible through the internet. For instance, in Cyber Clam Museum, 1000 gesture contents, the visual processes were used to design a screen with a realistic image and create an animation that makes possible show at 360 and every such transformation as translation, rotation, and scaling can be applied in the image interactively for the convenient and effective viewing.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 967~975
HTML is unstructured document because of using restricted tag. HTML is difficult to extract data from HTML document. But XML is able to use user definition tag, that is easy to store information. Also XML is easy to extract data from XML document. This is the reason why XML is a standard for data exchange format on the Internet, so XML is fitted to exchange data between heterogeneous DBMSs(DataBase Management System). In this paper, we designed and implemented of XML web agent for data replication between heterogeneous DBMSs. A XML web agent system controls data of DBMS, and generates a XML document from data of DBMS. Also XML web agent is data exchange or replication between heterogeneous DBMS by the medium of XML.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 976~984
C# and .NET platform in Microsoft Corp. has been developed to meet the needs of programmers, and cope with Java and JVM platform of Sun Microsystems. After compiling, a program written in .NET language is converted to MSIL code, and also executed by .NET platform but not in JVM platform. Java, one of the most widely used programming languages recently, is the language invented by James Gosling at Sun Microsystems, which is the next generation language independent of operating systems and hardware platforms. Java source code is compiled into bytecode as intermediate code independent of each platform by compiler, and also executed by JVM. This paper presents the MSIL-to-Bytecode intermediate language translator which enables the execution of the program written in .NET language such as C or C# in JVM(Java Virtual Machine) environment, translating MSIL code produced by compiling .NET program into java bytecode. This work provides an environment for programmers to develop application programs without limitations of programming languages.

Song, Jong-Soo ; Lim, Soon-Bum ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 985~997
In this paper, an automatic programming error-diagnosing system is provided for novice C programmers by plan matching and program execution. Program execution results are used to provide flexibility in describing the relationship between programming plans, to verify the correctness of the plan matching differences, and to detect the influence of a plan's error to the related plan. We can give easy and informative explanations to the students according to a plan's error and the resulting effects to related plans. The students are consulted to check their program's correctness with the given test data. Our error-diagnosing system is tested with student's programs for the 14 various and difficult problems and gives acceptable recognition results.
Japanese-Korean Machine Translation System Using Connection Forms of Neighboring Words
Kim, Jung-In ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 998~1008
There are many syntactic similarities between Japanese and Korean languages. Using these similarities, we can make out the Japanese-Korean translation system without most of syntactic analysis and semantic analysis. To improve the translation rates greatly, we have been developing the Japanese-Korean translation system using these similarities from several years ago. However, the system remains some problems such as a translation of inflected words, processing of multi-translatable words and so on. In this paper, we suggest the new method of Japanese-Korean translation by using relations of two neighboring words. To solve the problems, we investigated the connection rules of auxiliary verbs priority. And we design the translation table which is consists of entry tables and connection forms tables. A case of only one translation word, we can translate a Korean to Japanese by direct matching method use of only entry table, otherwise we have to evaluate the connection value by connection forms tables and then we can select the best translation word.
Business Component Identification Based on System Component Applying Dependency Characteristics between Analysis Classes
Choi, Mi-Sook ; Cho, Eun-Sook ; Ha, Jong-Sung ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 7, issue 7, 2004, Pages 1009~1016
Component-based development is being generalized as the spread of software reuse technology for rapid development productivity and high quality software.In the CBD, the identification of independent and reusable component is the one of important tasks for component-based system development. Because existing methodologies providing component identification techniques provide techniques based on heuristic techniques of component developer, it is difficult for general developers to identify components using these methods. Therefore, this paper suggests new identification factors and a technique by considering dependency characteristics according to method call types and method call directions and dependency degree. Furthermore, proposed technique is verified through case study; business components based on system components are identified effectively.
