Development of a System for Music Plagiarism Detection Using Melody Databases
Park Jeong il ; Kim Sang Wook ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 1~8
Similar melody searching is an operation that finds such melodies similar to a given query melody from a music database. In this paper, we address the development of a system that detects plagiarism based on the similar melody searching. We first Propose a novel similarity model that supports alignment as well as shifting. Also, we suggest a method for indexing the features extracted from each melody, and a method for processing plagiarism detection by using the index. By our plagiarism detection system composers can easily searches for such melodies that are similar to their ones from music databases. Through performance evaluation via a series of experiments, we show the effectiveness of our approach. The results reveal that our approach outperforms the sequential-scan-based one in speed up to around 31 times.

Kim Jeong Woo ; Cho Seong Hwan ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 9~18
This paper presents the method of calculating the quantization level of the intra-frame in MPEG-4 video encoder. The intra-frame is an essential part in that the quality of the whole GOP is affected by the quality of this frame since the intra-frame, which works as a reference frame within GOP, continuously propagates through other frames. This work proposes how to use bits assigned for gaining the quantization level of the intra-frame, complexity of input images, and GOP structures. The result shows that while existing approaches have the decline in efficiency by using fixed values or show different qualifies depending on the characteristics of the images, the current approach shows the steady results in various images. Comparing with Q2 algorithm obtained in MPEG-4 VM, the approach suggested in this paper gains the benefit of maximum 3.49dB with some variations depending on the characteristics of the images.
Image Compression and Edge Detection Based on Wavelet Transforms
Jung il Hong ; Kim Young Soon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 19~26
The basis function of wavelet transform used in this paper is constructed by using lifting scheme, which is different from general wavelet transform. Lifting scheme is a new biorthogonal wavelet con-structing method, that does not use Fourier transform for constructing its basis function. In this paper, an image compression and reconstruction method using the lifting scheme was proposed. And this method improves data visualization by supporting a partial reconstruction and a local reconstruction. Approx- imations at various resolutions allow extracting various sizes of feature from an image or signal with a small amount of original information. An approximation with small size of scaling coefficients gives a brief outline of features at fast. Image compression and edge detection techniques provide good frame- works for data management and visualization in multimedia database.

Shin Choong Ho ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 27~33
In this paper, an effective skeleton method is proposed in order to obtain an enhanced digital image of skeleton line. The binary image using the threshold values is applied in the preprocessing stage and then The proposed method is applied to obtain the improved image of skeleton line. We used the existing skeleton methods and SPTA(Shin's Parallel Thinning Algorithm) method for the comparison. The demerits of the existing skeleton methods have a result of noise branch, expansion and contraction. and then we are proposed a SPTA method.
Surface Curvature Based 3D Pace Image Recognition Using Depth Weighted Hausdorff Distance
Lee Yeung hak ; Shim Jae chang ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 34~45
In this paper, a novel implementation of a person verification system based on depth-weighted Hausdorff distance (DWHD) using the surface curvature of the face is proposed. The definition of Hausdorff distance is a measure of the correspondence of two point sets. The approach works by finding the nose tip that has a protrusion shape on the face. In feature recognition of 3D face image, one has to take into consideration the orientated frontal posture to normalize after extracting face area from original image. The binary images are extracted by using the threshold values for the curvature value of surface for the person which has differential depth and surface characteristic information. The proposed DWHD measure for comparing two pixel sets were used, because it is simple and robust. In the experimental results, the minimum curvature which has low pixel distribution achieves recognition rate of 98% among the proposed methods.

In this paper, we realize the panoramic infrared warning system to detect the small threaten object and propose the infrared image enhancement method to improve the warning ability of this system. This system composes of the sense head unit, the signal processing unit, and so on. In the proposed system, the sense head unit acquires the panoramic IR image with 360 degree field of view(FOV) by rotating the thermal sensor. The signal processing unit divides panoramic image into four sub-images with 90 degree FOV and computes the adaptive plateau value by using statistical characteristics of each subimage. Then the histogram equalization is performed for each subimage by using the adaptive plateau value. We realize the signal Processing unit by using the DSP and FPGA to perform the proposed method in real time. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better discrimination and lower false alarm rate than the conventional methods in this warning system.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 62~70
In this paper, we present an architecture for supporting QoS multicast routing in mobile ad-hoc networks. The proposed architecture consists of three parts as follows. The first part is a mobility-based clustering as underlying structure for supporting stable multicast services. In the second part, a framework which can support and evaluate the stability of route and network for supporting QoS routing is presented. In the third part, we describe a method which uses two structures of the first and second parts for supporting QoS multicast routing services. The performance evaluation of our proposed architecture is accomplished via modeling and simulation using the Optimized Network Engineering tool(OPNET).

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 71~78
When a PDA is used as a mobile terminal in an infrastructure network based on 802.11b standard wireless LAN, we measured and evaluated the performance of multimedia data transmission. In general, PDAs are mainly used tot receiving bulk data like multimedia data. However, while a PDA as a mobile host transfers multimedia data to a desktop PC as a fixed host in such a network, the time taken to receive data from the PC to the PDA is always longer than the time taken to send data from the PDA to the PC by at least 53%. Thus, we consider some critical factors that affect the time taken to receive Our experimental results show that with the PDA the time taken to access a file for writing is longer than the time taken to access a file for reading of to 4.11 times. In addition, a dramatic change of the site of the receiver window, from 686 bytes to 32,383 bytes, prolongs the time taken to receive. To transfer data without any inter-packet interval for the PDA and to increase the size of the TCP receive buffer will be effective in improving the delay to receive data.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 79~87
In e-commerce applications, a public key cryptosystem is an important and indispensible element for the basic security operations such as authentication, digital signaturing, and key distribution. In wired network environments, the public key infrastructure certificate, which is based on X.509 specification, has been widely used. On the other hand, it still remains difficult to use the certificate information in wireless network environments due to the inherent limitations of the hand-held devices such as low computational power and short battery life. In this paper, we facilitate a codesign approach by implementing a software public-key cryptosystem and classifying its internal computation overheads quantitatively using a software profiling technique. Moreover, we propose a method to analyze the profiled data and apply it to the problem of software/hardware partitioning in a codesign approach. As an illustrative example, we analyze the computational overheads of an EC-Elfagamal application and examine a critical computational path.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 8, issue 1, 2005, Pages 88~100
In computer graphics, realistic skin rendering has been regarded as difficult tasks and remains as an important research subject. Translucent materials like skin have some complicated optical properties including subsurface scattering. In this paper, we proposes a skin shader based on subsurface scattering to render realistic skin and it has been implemented as a plug-in for Maya, 3D Package. The rendered image using this proposed skin shader appears more realistic than the rendered image using classical shading techniques. Furthermore, we could model sebum, epidermis, dermis using specular reflection, multiple scattering, single scattering respectively.

Each university in Korea has connected its campus network to outer network with a variety methods since every year KREN adopted an open bid in selecting a network service company. In particular many universities connected two or more outer networks have faced more complex decision problems about their network operations due to the intricacy of the networks. So, those university needs the system which helps the managers to select the optimum operating method for their campus networks. In this paper, campus network traffic efficiency based on utilization was analyzed using the manager's answers to the questions for traffic management. And, by the result of analysis, the link strategy to outer networks was suggested for the universities running simultaneously two outer networks.
