Performance Evaluation of Catalog Management Schemes for Distributed Main Memory Databases

Distributed main memory database management systems (DMM-DBMSs) store the database in main memories of the participating sites. They provide high performance through fast access to the local databases and high speed communication among the sites. Recently, a lot of research results on DMM- DBMSs has been reported. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no known research result on the performance of the catalog management schemes for DMM-DBMSs. In this work, we evaluated the performance of the partitioned catalog management schemes through experimental analysis. First, we classified the partitioned catalog management schemes into three categories : Partitioned Catalogs Without Caching (PCWC), Partitioned Catalogs With Incremental Caching (PCWIC), and Partitioned Catalogs With Full Caching (PCWFC). Experiments were conducted by varying the number of sites, the number of terminals per site, buffer size, write query ratio, and local query ratio. Experiments show that PCWFC outperforms the other two schemes in all cases. It also means that the performance of PCWIC gradually increases as time goes by. It should be noted that PCWFC does not guarantee high performance for disk-based distributed DBMSs in cases when the workload of individual site is high, catalog write ratio is high, or remote data objects are accessed very frequently. Main reason that PCWFC outperforms for DMM-DBMSs is that query compilation and remote catalog access can be done in a very high speed, even when the catalogs of the remote data objects are frequently updated.
A Study on Feature Information Parsing of Video Image Using Improved Moment Invariant

Today, multimedia information is used on the internet and various social areas by rapid development of computer and communication technology. Therefor, the usage is growing dramatically. Multimedia information analysis system is basically based on text. So, there are many difficult problems like expressing ambiguity of multimedia information, excessive burden of works in appending notes and a lack of objectivity. In this study, we suggest a method which uses color and shape information of multimedia image partitions efficiently analyze a large amount of multimedia information. Partitions use field growth and union method. To extract color information, we use distinctive information which matches with a representative color from converting process from RGB(Red Green Blue) to HSI(Hue Saturation Intensity). Also, we use IMI(Improved Moment Invariants) which target to only outline pixels of an object and execute computing as shape information.
Face Feature Extraction Method ThroughStereo Image's Matching Value

In this paper, we propose face feature extraction algorithm through stereo image's matching value. The proposed algorithm detected face region by change the RGB color space of skin color information to the YCbCr color space. Applying eye-template from extracted face region geometrical feature vector of feature about distance and lean, nose and mouth between eye extracted. And, Proposed method could do feature of eyes, nose and mouth through stereo image's matching as well as 2D feature information extract. In the experiment, the proposed algorithm shows the consistency rate of 73% in distance within about 1m and the consistency rate of 52%in distance since about 1m.
Color Image Segmentation Using Adaptive Quantization and Sequential Region-Merging Method

In this paper, we propose an image segmentation method preserving object's boundaries by using the number of quantized colors and merging regions using adaptive threshold values. First of all, the proposed method quantizes an original image by a vector quantization and the number of quantized colors is determined differently using PSNR each image. We obtain initial regions from the quantized image, merge initial regions in CIE Lab color space and RGB color space step by step and segment the image into semantic regions. In each merging step, we use color distance between adjacent regions as similarity-measure. Threshold values for region-merging are determined adaptively according to the global mean of the color difference between the original image and its split-regions and the mean of those variations. Also, if the segmented image of RGB color space doesn't split into semantic objects, we merge the image again in the CIE Lab color space as post-processing. Whether the post-processing is done is determined by using the color distance between initial regions of the image and the segmented image of RGB color space. Experiment results show that the proposed method splits an original image into main objects and boundaries of the segmented image are preserved. Also, the proposed method provides better results for objective measure than the conventional method.
Microcalcification Extraction by Wavelet Transform and Automatic Thresholding

In this paper, we proposed the microcalcification detection algorithm which is based on wavelet transform and automatic thresholding method in the X-ray mammographic images. Digital X-ray imaging system is essential equipment in the field diagnosis and is widely used in the various fields such as chest, fracture of a bone, and dental correction. Especially, digital X-ray mammographic imaging is known as the most important method to diagnose the breast cancer, many researches to develop the imaging system are processing in country. In this paper, we proposed a microcalcifications detection algorithm necessary in the early phase of breast cancer diagnosis and showed that a algorithm could effectively detect microcalfication and could aid diagnosis-radiologist.
Segmentation of the Optic Nerve Head and theOptic Cup on Stereo Fundus Image

In this paper, we proposed the new segmentation method of optic nerve head and optic cub to consider the depth of optic nerve head on stereo fundus image. We analyzed the error factor of stereo matching on stereo fundus image, and compensated them. For robust extraction of optic nerve head and optic cub, we proposed the modified active contour model to consider the 3D depth of optic nerve head. As experiment result to various stereo fundus images, we confirmed that proposed method can segment optic nerve head and optic cup effectively.
Dynamic Hybrid Patching for the Efficient Use of VOD Server's Network-I/O Bandwidth

This paper proposes a dynamic hybrid patching technique that can improve the performance of VOD systems by adopting the advantages of both greedy patching and grace patching to use a VOD server's limited network-I/O bandwidth. The proposed technique uses grace patching to the requests for the videos, arrival intervals of which are smaller than the size of patching window, and uses greedy patching to the rest requests. In addition, proposed patching technique expands the latest particular patching multicast into a regular multicast for a new request. In result, the patching multicast data for the new request can be the data from the beginning to the skew point of the video and the holding time of a dispatched channel can exceedingly decrease. Simulation results confirm that the proposed technique is better than grace patching in terms of defection rate and average service latency.
DCF Throughput Analysis of the MAC Layer in the IEEE 802.11 Wireless LAN

This paper explores the throughput of DCF protocol with both the traffic intensity and MSDU size at the MAC layer in the 802.11a wireless LAN. By exploring the throughput of DCF protocol with the data rate of 6Mbps, 12 Mbps, 24 Mbps and 54 Mbps, we find the fact that the less the data rate be, the higher the throughput be. We also find, from the throughput calculation by means of traffic intensity and MSDU size, that the longer the MSDU size is, the higher the throughput is. We also found the traffic intensity that the throughput is at the maximum point with the fixed MSDU size.
HVS Based Digital Watermarking Using the POCS Theory

In this paper, a new watermarking scheme based on the POCS theory and human visual system is proposed. Using the POCS theory, watermarks are embedded into imperceptible image regions such as edge and strong texture area in the spatial domain. Also it is inserted into middle frequency band in the transform domain to achieve the robustness against compression and filtering, etc. In addition, different gain factors are employed into blocks classified by considering texture masking effect. By doing so, the proposed method has a novel property of having both the imperceptibility and the robustness simultaneously. Simulation results show that the proposed method has an excellent performance better than conventional approaches.
Password-Based Authenticated Tripartite Key Exchange Protocol

A password-based authenticated tripartite key exchange protocol based on A. Joux's protocol was proposed. By using encryption scheme with shared password, we can resolve man-in-the-middle attack and lack of authentication problems. We also suggested a scheme to avoid the offline dictionary attack to which symmetric encryption schemes are vulnerable. The proposed protocol does not require a trusted party which is required in certificate or identity based authentication schemes. Therefore in a ad hoc network which is difficult to install network infrastructure, the proposed protocol would be very useful. The proposed protocol is more efficient in computation aspect than any existing password-based authenticated tripartite key exchange protocols. When it is used as a base line protocol of tree based group key exchange protocol, the computational weak points of the proposed protocol are compensated.
The Creational Patterns Application to the Game Design Using the DirectX

3D online game, with its striking realistic value, is leading the entire Korean game market which has various game genres. Technology sharing is very hard within the Korean game industry. That is because 1)there are few professionals, 2)most of the companies are small-scaled, and 3)there are security reasons. Therefore, it should be significant if we have software design techniques which make it possible to reuse the existing code when developing a network game so that we could save a lot of efforts. In this paper, the author analyzes the demand through the case in the client's design of the network game based on DirectX and proposes the effective software design methods for reusable code based on the creative patterns application in the GoF in the class design.
Development of Intelligent Agent Based Inclination Test Grouping E-learning System (IIGS)

In this paper, the research has been done to develop the inclination test items to form the desirable online learning community in which social interaction may be maximized, dropout rate lowered and learners' feeling of isolation eliminated. Once developed, the inclination test items have been classified into homogeneous ones and heterogeneous ones. And on the basis of the results of this research, Intelligent agent based Inclination Test Grouping e-learning System(IIGS) has been developed, which can perform automatic grouping of online leaning community by intelligent agent. The results of this research with 1,000 teachers in reality by means of developing the grouping system have shown that 151 groups are automatically formed. Among them, 34% have shown very high degree of learning satisfaction and intended to maintain the groups in the future.
A Study on the Dynamic Painterly Stroke Generation for 3D Animation

We suggest the dynamic stroke generation algorithm that provides frame-to-frame coherence in 3D non-photorealistic animations. We use 3D particle system to eliminate the visual popping effect in the animated scene. Since we have located particles on the 3D object's surface, the coherence is maintained when the object or the camera is moving in the scene. Also, this algorithm maintains the coherence when camera is zooming in/out. However, the brush strokes on the surface also zoom in/out. This result(too large or too small brush strokes) can not represent hand-crafted brush strokes. To remove this problem, we suggest stroke generation algorithm that dynamically maintains the number of brush stroke and its size during camera zoom in/out.
Shopping Mall Avatar System Using Behavior and Motion Description Language

In spite of recent increase in the use of avatar in Web and Virtual Reality, there has not been a service that allows users to control directly the avatar behaviors. In addition, the conventional behavior control languages required a lot of complicated information for controlling the avatar motions. Moreover, in order to apply written languages to a different task domain, it was necessary to modify or rewrite the languages. In this paper, we define Task-Level Behavior Description Language and Motion Representation Language for more simple control of the avatar behavior. The first thing allows describing the avatar behaviors in each task domain, and The second thing enables writing detailed data for motion control. And in this paper, we developed an interpreter which can automatically change the Behavior Description Language to the Motion Representation Language. So this system allow users control the avatar behavior simply with only use the Behavior Description Language. The system was applied to shopping mall and the Task-level Behavior Description Language was compared with conventional languages to see how it was more effective in behavior description.
Design and Implementation of OLE-Container for an Object-Oriented CASE Tool, OODesigner

Research and development projects, in the past decade, has shown that object-oriented(OO) technology could importantly contribute in productivity and reusability improvement. There are various research areas related to OO technology. Two of major research fields in this areas are concerned in issues for CASE tools and component-based technologies. This paper discusses an example of applying component-based technology to a CASE tool. This paper proposes the research experience gained while we have incrementally developing OODesigner, an OO CASE tool, with compound document support functionality based on COM/OLE technology. As OODesigner with OLE container functionality has interoperability with other application programs of Windows system which can be run as a OLE server, it can provide more powerful documentation environment than other CASE tools. OODesigner can be used not only to design UML diagrams, but also to make documentation cooperatively with various kinds of OLE- enabled software like Recoder and Excel. Therefore we can conduct powerful and consistent documentation with the tool.
