Hong Kwang-Jin ; Jung Kee-Chul ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 377~387
Digital documents takes place of paper (off-line) documents, because of the advantages of digital (on-line) documents: supply of information using dynamic contents and good to communize. However, users prefer paper documents to digital documents with the advantages of paper documents: inexpensive, handy to carry, and good to read. Therefore, for providing advantages of digital documents to users who prefer paper documents, many laboratories study about methods which augment digital documents to paper documents. In this paper, we propose the Hybrid Documents Authoring Tool (HDAT), which can insert, delete, and modify on-line information to the off-line. The proposed system is a unified authoring tool for reading and writing of on-line information. And we provide the most natural environment to users using computer vision technology without additional devices such as markers or patterns to retrieve documents. As shown by experimental results, we make sure that our proposed system has high usability and good efficiency on various environments through we measure the low-level of system requirement.

There are wireless location acquisition technique, LBS platform technique, and LBS application technique in the important technical elements of the LBS. In this paper, we design a location data management system which is the core base technique of the important technical elements of the LBS. The proposed system consist of an application interface of LBS, a query processor of application. service, a location estimator of the moving objects, a location information manager, a real-time data receiver, and a database of location data. This system manages efficiently the location change information of the moving objects using the database technique, suggests some useful inform to the users of LBS, and supports operation and facility of location estimation to process continuous location data of the moving objects. On the basis of location data triggering, this system supplements the problem of the related location data management systems to complement the loss of location data in the environment of real-time.

We propose video management system based on MPEG-7 for mobile device(MVMS). Most of existing MPEG-7 applications manage MPEG-7 document based on file system in the desktop environment. To contrast them, because the MVMS manages only necessary information using embedded database system for MPEG-7 documents in mobile devices, it can use efficiently lack of the resource in mobile device environment. MVMS supports key image extraction and MPEG-7 document edition function. Moreover, this is possible search and management of multi document because of MVMS manage MPEG-7 data through embedded DB.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 414~420
Online character recognition techniques have been applied in many new fields of PDA, Tablet PC etc. But the recognition techniques can not use such high technologies naturally yet. Hidden Markov Model (HMM) that is much used recently requires high memory space and complex computational tasks because of comparing the input data with entire standard patterns. In this paper we propose a method to recognize the online characters more efficiently. At first we create chain-codes of learning data and recognition data in preprocessing phase, and then we compress dimensions of data using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and recognize a character compressed data in recognition phrase. Validity of proposed method .is verified. by experiment results.
Video Augmentation of Virtual Object by Uncalibrated 3D Reconstruction from Video Frames
Park Jong-Seung ; Sung Mee-Young ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 421~433
This paper proposes a method to insert virtual objects into a real video stream based on feature tracking and camera pose estimation from a set of single-camera video frames. To insert or modify 3D shapes to target video frames, the transformation from the 3D objects to the projection of the objects onto the video frames should be revealed. It is shown that, without a camera calibration process, the 3D reconstruction is possible using multiple images from a single camera under the fixed internal camera parameters. The proposed approach is based on the simplification of the camera matrix of intrinsic parameters and the use of projective geometry. The method is particularly useful for augmented reality applications to insert or modify models to a real video stream. The proposed method is based on a linear parameter estimation approach for the auto-calibration step and it enhances the stability and reduces the execution time. Several experimental results are presented on real-world video streams, demonstrating the usefulness of our method for the augmented reality applications.
Characterization Method and Color Matching Technology for Mobile Display
Park Kee-Hyun ; Ha Yeong-Ho ; Lee Cheol-Hee ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 434~442
This paper proposes a color-matching 3D look-up table that simplifies the complex color-matching procedure between a monitor and a mobile display device, where the image colors are processed in a device-independent color space, such as CIEXYZ or CIELAB, and gamut mapping performed to compensate the gamut difference. The transform from a device-dependent RGB color space to a device-independent color space is implemented by performing display characterization. The mobile LCD characterization error using the S-curve model is larger than the tolerance error since the mobile LCD has the channel-chromaticity-inconstancy and channel-dependence characteristics. In this paper we reduced the characterization error using the electro-optical transfer functions of X, Y, and Z value for R, G, B, C, M, Y, K components. Experimental results demonstrated that 64 (
) was the smallest size of color-matching look-up table that could produce an image with an acceptable reproduction error, based on a comparison of color-matched images resulting from the proposed color-matching look-up table and complex step-by-step color-matching procedures.
Wavelet Transform Based Low Pass Filters and Interpolation Filters in Digital Image Communication Systems
Yoo Hoon ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 443~450
In digital image communication systems, YUV 4:2:0 or YUV 4:2:2 images filtered and subsampled versions of YUV 4:4:4 images are utilized and these images recover their size by an interpolation filter. Low pass filters and interpolation filters in the image communication systems are generally utilized. Thus, to improve the image quality, efficient low pass filters and interpolation filters are still required. In this paper, we propose new and efficient low pass filters and interpolation filters and their design method. The low pass filters and interpolation filters used in the MPEG-2 system were developed independently. We utilize wavelet transforms to jointly design low pass filters and interpolation filters. Simulation results show that the proposed filters are superior to the filters used in MPEG-2 in terms of PSNR. In addition, the length of the proposed interpolation filters is shorter than that of the filters used in the MPEG 2 system.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 451~459
Color reproduction of small LCD display is quite different from that of standard CRT due to the difference of physical, electrical, and optical characteristics. In this paper, we propose a simple and practical method using gamma and CCT correction for improvement of color reproduction on a small LCD display. First, we investigate characteristics of a small LCD display such as brightness, uniformity, color temperature, white and black balance, and nonlinear gamma. And, we also analyze color reproduction region and CCT trajectory according to LCD's input levels. Finally, the optimum gamma and CCT compensation method using LUT is proposed, and our proposed method was realized at mobile phone without hardware modification. In the experimental results, the result image of proposed algorithm is more close to standard color.

Lee Eung-Joo ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 470~481
In this paper, we propose a real-time face detection, tracking and tilted face image correction system using multi-color model and face feature information. In the proposed system, we detect face candidate using YCbCr and YIQ color model. And also, we detect face using vertical and horizontal projection method and track people's face using Hausdorff matching method. And also, we correct tilted face with the correction of tilted eye features. The experiments have been performed for 110 test images and shows good performance. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm robust to detection and tracking of face at real-time with the change of exterior condition and recognition of tilted face. Accordingly face detection and tilted face correction rate displayed 92.27% and 92.70% respectively and proposed algorithm shows 90.0% successive recognition rate.
Event Message Processing in Virtual Environment Using the Extended Area of Interest Model
Yu Seok-Jong ;
Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 482~489
How to process event message traffic efficiently is important to collaboration among multiple distributed users, and it is a key research issue in the virtual environment fields. AOI model is one of solutions for this problem; which reduces message traffic by restricting event propagation region into an area in which a user is interested. However, in previous systems, it is difficult to adapt to dynamic environment where changes in the number and movement of participants are frequent. This paper proposes a new event management model, called extended AOI model, which is helpful to improve flexibility and efficiency of traditional models, and is able to extend its functions by introducing multi-layered regions. The proposed model can be applied to DVE and MMORPG as an event filtering model.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 505~514
We proposes a multipurpose image watermarking algorithm which embeds visible watermark and invisible watermark into an original image. This is to satisfy the two characteristics of copyright notification of the visible watermark and copyright protection of the invisible watermark. The visible watermark's transparency is highlighted to be easily identified in contrast to the original image and the invisible watermark is embedded in a spatial domain.

Journal of Korea Multimedia Society, volume 9, issue 4, 2006, Pages 515~527
Domestic standards for data broadcasting differ in the fact that satellite broadcasting chose MHP, cable OCAP, satellite ACAP, therefore making reuse of data contents impossible due to the differences. To resolve this problem, this study designed and implemented independent middleware class library for developing data broadcasting contents. To define class library which could bridge between applications and different middleware, standard library developing methods were used; and analysis of procedural application of each middleware was carried out. Based upon the analysis, classes with embedded transform and handle modules were defined to be linked to libraries of each middleware; and to verify the implemented class library, test contents were created to be compared to the existing contents. This kind of contents development by independent middleware class library allows for reuse of data contents easier, and develops an environment for higher quality of contents by reducing the efforts needed to learn each middleware for the developers.
