Evaluation Metrics for Class Hierarchy in Object-Oriented Databases: Concurrency Control Perspectives

Object-oriented databases (OODBs) have been adopted for managing non-standard applications such as computer-aided design (CAD), office document management and many multimedia applications. One of the major characteristics of OODBs is class hierarchy where a subclass is allowed to inherit the definitions defined on its superclasses. In this paper, I present the evaluation metrics for class hierarchy quality in OODBs. These metrics are developed to determine if a concurrency control scheme can achieve good performance or not on a given class hierarchy. I first discuss the existing concurrency control schemes for OODBs. Then I provide evaluation metrics based on structural information and access frequency information in class hierarchies. In order to discuss significance of the proposed performance metrics, an analytical model is developed. Analysis results show that the performance metrics are important factor in concurrency control performance. I consider both single inheritance and multiple inheritance. The proposed metrics can be used to provide guidelines on how to design class hierarchy of an OODB for maximizing the performance of concurrency control technique.
Storing and Retrieval of Multiversion XML Documents in Relational Databases

In this paper, we propose a method of managing versions of XML documents by using relational databases. Data structures based on relational tables are developed for accommodating versions of XML documents. The structure information, the contents, and changes of the versions are stored in relational tables. Thus, SQL can be exploited in queries such as horizontal queries, vertical queries, and delta queries without parsing the documents. The structure information and contents of all versions are not represented explicitly in the tables, those of certain versions which are called snapshot versions are represented. Other versions are represented indirectly as sequences of operations that are stored in the corresponding tables. The experiment shows the space performance.
Adaptive Digital Watermarking for Copyright Protection of CAD Data

To protect against unlawful reproductions and distribution, the current paper proposes a digital watermarking technique for architectural drawings produced using a CAD system. First, the POLYLINEs are extracted from the drawing; then, an adaptive algorithm is used to embed a watermark in the characteristics of each POLYLINE. Next, the CIRCLEs are embedded using an adaptive watermarking algorithm related to the radius of circle from drawing. The proposed watermarking scheme is robust to various attacks, such as the geometrical transformation. Additionally, the proposed method satisfies the requirement of transparency for CAD program. It used AutoCAD 2002, which is commonly used as a CAD program for experiments. Experimental results confirmed the robustness and invisibility of the embedded watermarks in several conversions of an architectural drawing.
Integrated Methods of Various Media Generators in The SuperSQL Query Process System

In this paper, we propose a method which allows the SuperSQL query processor to share as much code as possible among various, generators, each of which is responsible for the output of a certain medium. SuperSQL is an enhanced query-processing system that converts database records into a variety of formats such as XML, HTML, PDF and etc. However, the existing SuperSQL media generator would require creation of a different processor for each medium, causing duplicated development cost. This research makes three main contributions: First, it analyzes the structures of various media, examining any possibility of integration based on their common structure. Second, it also facilitates the addition of a new output media generator by separating constructors and decorators from each medium. Last, it provides an integrated user interface to each media by method of the Media Abstraction Table Concept. We also show the performance and feasibility of our system using experimental results.
Space-Time Carrier Interferometry Techniques with Low-density Parity Check Code for High-speed Multimedia Communications

Carrier interferometry code is considered as a promising scheme that provides significant performance improvement via frequency diversity effect. Space-time coding is commonly employed to achieve a performance gain through space diversity. The combination of these techniques and forward error correction coding will lead to enhanced system capacity and performance. This paper presents a low-density parity check (LDPC) coded space-time orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission scheme with carrier interferometry code for high-capacity and high-performance mobile multimedia communications. Computer simulations demonstrate that the proposed mobile multimedia transmission system offers a considerable performance improvement of approximately 9dB in terms of Eb/No in the Rayleigh fading channel with relatively low delay spread, in comparison with space-time OFDM. Performance gains are further increased, comparing with traditional OFDM systems.
The Security Systems in the Wireless Home Networks

In the near future, the wireless home networks will connect several devices at home. Due to the broadcast nature of a wireless network, anyone can hear and capture communication. Thus, we need to protect our network from attacks outside the house. In this paper, we propose and implement a security system that provides different levels of the security services to heterogenous home devices. To reduce the communication cost and workload of the server, home devices send the encrypted messages directly instead of sending through the sever. We implement our security system on laptops using JAVA and our security system achieves the better performance with the large number of devices and messages in a network. In order to prove that our security system is secure against various attacks, we analyze the security of our security system using attack trees.
Design of Network-based Game Using the GoF Design Patterns

In the network-based game where it uses the Internet infrastructure, the implementation is possible with the various methods. Such Applications are developed in the multi-tired architecture. There are many cases for the server to be separated from the hardware or the software. In this case, a lot of applications make the distributed process possible and are made as the multi-tiered architecture to develop the reusability of the existing software module. Especially, it is mostly general to separate for the case of a database server to a new tier. One of the important points of multi-tiered server side applications is security and because of this, it is difficult to share the related data about the design skill. Using design patterns, it gives help in reusing the existing written-code for the design of the game that needs a lot of money and time. Design Patterns are related to the software reuse. For the development of more efficient games, if well-defined design patterns are provided to the developers, then it would make more easy advanced game API and make possible the framework for the game development based on the API Through the analysis of the general network-based game currently servicing in the Internet, in this paper, we discuss how to implement a business logic tier using database system among the server side architectures. The main objective of this article is to show an efficient APIs(Application Programming Interfaces) design method which can be used to manage the data that must be saved to the database system among the packets that client/server have to be exchange.
A Design Technique of Component Framework Based on Framework Reference Model

As CBD technologies and researches have been matured, component framework as a larger reuse unit than component is being introduced. Especially issues related with adaptation and integration of components in CBD are being raised as a new research topic. The component framework is given as a solution to resolve these issues. However, current approaches don't suggest a sound and comprehensive reference model and development process applying reference model. In order to develop practical and stable component framework, reference model and concrete guidelines are essential elements. In this paper, we propose a generic reference model integrating existing reference models and a design technique of component framework based on it. Especially, we propose concrete and pragmatic guidelines such as how to design component framework architecture's view and style, how to design commonality and variability of component framework, how to design macro workflows among components, and so on. We believe that the proposed reference model becomes basis for component framework development, and the proposed design technique will support reliable and effective development of the component framework.
Instance Based Learning Revisited: Feature Weighting and its Applications

Instance based learning algorithm is the best known lazy learner and has been successfully used in many areas such as pattern analysis, medical analysis, bioinformatics and internet applications. However, its feature weighting scheme is too naive that many other extensions are proposed. Our version of IB3 named as eXtended IBL (XIBL) improves feature weighting scheme by backward stepwise regression and its distance function by VDM family that avoids overestimating discrete valued attributes. Also, XIBL adopts leave-one-out as its noise filtering scheme. Experiments with common artificial domains show that XIBL is better than the original IBL in terms of accuracy and noise tolerance. XIBL is applied to two important applications - intrusion detection and spam mail filtering and the results are promising.
