Adaptive Culling Mechanism for Weather Phenomena Effect in Flight Simulator

Temporal disappearance of weather phenomena effect is frequently observed in flight simulator when large volume of terrain data are processed. This problem was solved by employing culling scheme at static ratio in the existing scheme. However, since this approach causes the irregular rendering speed according to volume of data, it is necessary to develop a new culling scheme to maintain steady rendering speed by adjusting the culling ratio dynamically. In this paper, we propose a new culling scheme to make use of distance of the visibility to determine culling ratio depending on volume of terrain data. The experimental results show that rendering speed is preserved by the proposed scheme without affecting the visuality at rendering the scene and weather phenomena effect together.
Development of Location Identification System for Moving Robot in the Sensor Space under KS Illumination Intensity Environment

When a mobile robot performs in unknown environments, a location identification is an essential task. In this paper, we propose a location identification system that uses a sensor space without additional devices on the robot. Also the sensor space consists of a matrix of CDS sensor; when a robot was positioned on the CDS sensor, we can estimate the coordinate of the location by sensing a light. Based on KS illumination standard, experiments are performed in various environments. By evaluating the experimental results, we can show that the proposed system can be applicable to the location identification system of a moving robot.
Power Consumption Analysis and Minimization of Electronic Shelf Label System

Energy consumption of sensor nodes is minimized because it has limited energy generator in wireless sensor network. Electronic shelf label system is one of application fields using wireless sensor networks. Battery size of small apparatus for displaying price is restricted. Therefore its current consumption have to be minimized. Furthermore the method for minimization of peak current would be considered because life cycle of coin battery used to display or RF is vulnerable to intensity of drain current. In this paper, we analyze current consumption pattern of low-power electronic shelf label system. Then we propose the method for minimization of current consumption by modification of software and hardware. Current consumption of the system using proposed method are approximately 15 to 20 percent lower than existing system and the life cycle of the system is approximately 10 percent higher than existing system.
An Efficient coding Method for Motion Prediction Flag in the Scalable Video Encoding Standard

In the scalable video coding standard, inter-layer prediction based on the coding information of the base layer was adopted to increase the coding performance. This prediction tool results in new syntax elements called motion_prediction_flag (mPF) and residul_prediction_flag(rPF), which are carried to notify the motion vector predictor (MVP) and reference block required in the motion compensation of the decoder. In this paper, an efficient coding method for mPF is proposed to enhance coding efficiency of the salable video coding standard. Through an analysis on the transmission of mPF based on the relationship between the MVPs, we discover the conditions where mPF is unnecessary at the decoder and suggest a modified rate-distortion (RD) cost function to make RD optimization more effective. Simulation results show that the proposed method offers BD rate savings of approximately 1.4%, compared with the conventional SVC standard.
AUTOSAR Starter Kit for AUTOSAR Software Design

An AUTomotive Open System ARchitecture (AUTOSAR) is a de-facto standardized software platform, which developed for an automotive Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in global automotive industry. AUTOSAR improves the reusability and the scalability, thus the software development can be easier, faster and more reliable. However, it requires a lot of time and efforts to develop an AUTOSAR software due to the difficulties of understanding of massive AUTOSAR documentations and complicated usage of AUTOSAR design tools. AUTOSAR training is offered by AUTOSAR design tool venders but it is limited to introduction of their simplified concept and usages based on PC. Therefore the training is not enough for industrial developers or graduate students. In this paper we present an AUTOSAR starter kit which allows industrial engineers and graduate students to practice the detailed process of AUTOSAR software development easily and more conveniently. The kit is composed of a practical environment similar to actual automotive system and a textbook that explains how to design AUTOSAR software. And we demonstrated the validity of our methodology based on a case study.
Fast Path Planning Algorithm for Mobile Robot Navigation

Mobile robots use an environment map of its workspace to complete the surveillance task. However grid-based maps that are commonly used map format for mobile robot navigation use a large size of memory for accurate representation of environment. In this reason, grid-based maps are not suitable for path planning of mobile robots using embedded board. In this paper, we present the path planning algorithm that produce a secure path rapidly. The proposed approach utilizes a hybrid map that uses less memory than grid map and has same efficiency of a topological map. Experimental results show that the fast path planning uses only 1.5% of the time that a grid map based path planning requires. And the results show a secure path for mobile robot.
Performance Evaluation of Energy Management Algorithms for MapReduce System

Analyzing large scale data has become an important activity for many organizations. Since MapReduce is a promising tool for processing the massive data sets, there are increasing studies to evaluate the performance of various algorithms related to MapReduce. In this paper, we first develop a simulation framework that includes MapReduce workload model, data center model, and the model of data access pattern. Then we propose two algorithms that can reduce the energy consumption of MapReduce systems. Using the simulation framework, we evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms under different application characteristics and configurations of data centers.
Design of XML Using UML in EtherCAT-based Encoder System

The EtherCAT protocol has become a very promising alternative for real-time industrial application due to its ability to eliminate uncertainties in the Ethernet. However, the extended markup language (XML) for the EtherCAT network system, which is required in the design, lacks systematic development to take advantage of model transformation techniques. This paper focuses on the system development procedure of the EtherCAT-based encoder system using the CANopen over EtherCAT (CoE) protocol. UML modeling is being adapted to design for XML of EtherCAT-based encoder system. To this purpose, this paper analyzes the object dictionary (OD) of a commercial encoder and CANopen over EtherCAT. A UML diagram is then designed based on the analysis, and XML is generated through the designed UML diagram. Finally, an experimental test_bed for the EtherCAT-based encoder system is implemented and its performance is compared with a commercial encoder.
