Correlations Between Mother's Personality Characteristics and Children's Diagnostic/Clinical Pathology

This research explored links between mother/child personality characteristics based on their diagnostic and clinical pathology. The 232 participants, selected from mother-child pairs receiving psychological care in a hospital setting, were tested and interviewed by clinical practitioners. Correlations were found between mothers' Psychopathic Deviate, Paranoia, Psychasthenia, and Schizophrenia and sons' Psychasthenia, aggression, alienation, depression, and anger. Mothers classified with Hysteria were likely to have aggressive children. Mothers with low self-esteem, repression, frustration, and strong levels of extroversion had daughters with anger/rage issues. Sons of mothers diagnosed with Hypochondriasis, Depression, Hysteria, Psychopathic Deviate, Paranoia, and Psychasthenia had high rates of Oppositional Defiant Disorder and ADHD. Children of mothers diagnosed with depression had high rates of ADHD. Specifically, mothers with Hypochondriasis, Hysteria, and Psychopathic Deviate had daughters with high rates of ADHD.
Mothers' Beliefs in Developmentally Appropriate Practice : Relationships with Mother's Childhood Experience, Parenting Efficacy and Parenting Behavior

This study investigated the beliefs in Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP) of 447 mothers of 4- and 5- year-old children by mother's childhood experience, parenting efficacy, and parenting behavior. Results showed that mother's beliefs in DAP were related to children's age, early childhood educational institution, monthly household income, mother's educational background, mother's childhood experience, parenting efficacy, and parenting behavior. Mothers with higher beliefs in DAP were mothers of kindergarten rather than mothers of daycare children; they had 4 years or more college education, and more than $3000 monthly household income.
Relationships Between Parenting Attitudes and Young Children's Injury Behavior

This study examined relationships between parenting attitudes and young children's injury risk behavior by age and gender. Subjects were 161 3- to 5-year old children and their parents. Instruments were the revised Parenting Attitudes Questionnaire (Reitman et al., 2002) and the Injury Behavior Checklist (Speltz et al., 1990). Data were analyzed by MANOV A. Results were that: 1) Fathers were more permissive to daughters; mothers were more permissive to younger children. 2) Older children had more injury risk behaviors than younger children; boys engaged in more injury risk behaviors than girls. 3) Fathers' authoritarian and mothers' permissive attitudes were positively related to children's injury risk behavior, respectively. Fathers' and mothers' authoritative attitudes were negatively related to children's injury risk behavior.
Relationships among Mother's Thinking Styles, Stress Coping Styles, and Child-Rearing Stress

This study investigated how mother's thinking styles are represented and researched relationships between their thinking styles, their stress coping styles, and child-rearing stress. Subjects were 254 mothers of children attending child care centers and kindergartens. Instruments were the Thinking Styles Questionnaire Short Version (Sternberg & Wagner, 1991), Parenting Stress Index/Short Form (Abidin, 1990), and the Way of Coping Checklist (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) Data were analyzed by MANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and regression. Results showed more educated mothers had legislative and internal thinking styles, and mothers employed outside the home had hierarchical, internal, and liberal thinking styles. Varieties of maternal thinking styles were related to parental distress, to parent-child dysfunctional interaction and to child's difficult temperament.
Early Childhood Teachers' Practice and Difficulties with Musical Concepts Treated in the 'Sing-a-New-Song' Activity

This study examined musical concepts of early childhood teachers with the 'Sing-a-New-Song' activity and problems teachers face in the application of musical concepts. Participants were 10 kindergarten teachers; data were collected through lesson plans, videos of classes, and interviews with teachers. Results showed that (1) selection of songs focused on words of a song rather than musical concepts; ignoring development of the musical level of the children. (2) Goal-setting ignored musical concepts. (3) Class management confused musical concepts with other concepts. (4) No evaluation of musical concepts was undertaken. Problems included teachers' lack of knowledge of musical development in young children, insufficient understanding and limited application of musical concepts, and low expectations regarding music as a subject of instruction.
Parenting Behaviors and Adolescents' Internalizing Problems in Single Parent Families : Mediating Effects of Emotional Regulation and Self-Esteem

This longitudinal study tested the role of adolescents' emotional regulation and self-esteem as mediators of the associations between parenting behaviors and adolescent's internalizing problems one year later in a sample of 125 adolescents aged 16 to 17 years growing up in single parent families. Structural equation modeling was used for analyses of research questions. Results indicated that time 1 parenting behaviors were not associated with time 2 adolescents' internalizing problems directly, but that time 1 and time 2 self-esteem mediated the associations between time 1 parenting behaviors and time 2 adolescents' internalizing problems.
Child Maltreatment and Resilience : Mediating Effects of Cognitive Function and Social Support

This study aimed to verify the mediating effects of cognitive function and social support and to establish a structural relationship between child maltreatment and resilience in school-age children (n=357) taken in by child protection service. In the first model (linear arrangement), each protective factor mediates independently between maltreatment and resilience; in the second model (arrangement in due order), cognitive function has mediating effects prior to social support. Analysis of data included descriptive statistics, Cronbach's a, confirmatory factor analysis, and structural equation modeling. Results of the first model showed indirect effects of cognitive function and social support. Results of the second model significantly affirmed that the mediators, cognitive function and social support, diminish negative effects of maltreatment by bolstering resilience.
Differences of Narrative Representations by Foster Care, Adopted and Biological Family Children

This study used the person-oriented approach to explore differences in narrative representations of 97 4-, 5- and 6-year old children (30 foster care, 40 biological family, 17 adopted). Using the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (Bretherton et al., 1990), observations were made to obtain children's narrative representations of content themes and performances. Descriptive statistics, ANOV A and hierarchical cluster analyses were performed. The results of this study were that : (1) Biological family children showed more empathy/helping representations. Foster care children and adopted children showed more anxious representations, and foster care children showed more dysregulated aggression. (2) Four clusters of foster care and adopted children and five clusters of family biological children were found.
Psychological Independence of Adolescents : Influences of Mothers' Attachment Experience, Psychological Control Behavior, and Adolescents' Attachment

This study examined influences of mothers' attachment experience and separation-anxious psychological control and of adolescents' attachment on adolescents' psychological independence. Participants were 302 high school students (106 boys; 196 girls) and their mothers. Data were collected via questionnaires. Data analyses were by Pearson's correlation and Hierarchical Multiple Regression. Results showed that 1) Mothers' attachment experience with their mothers was positively related to girls' attachment to their mothers; mothers' separation-anxious psychological control was negatively related to adolescents' attachment. 2) Adolescents' attachment to their mothers predicted their emotional and functional psychological independence negatively. 3) Mothers' psychological control was negatively related to functional independence of boys but positively related to emotional independence of both boys and girls.
Bullying Situations : Gender Differences in Social Status and Social Emotions of Participant Roles

This study explored gender differences in social status, acceptance/rejection, perceived popularity, social emotions, avoidance and anxiety by participant roles in bullying situations. Subjects were 215 6th grade children. Instruments were the Participant Roles (Sutton & Smith, 1999), Peer Nomination (Coie & Dodge, 1983 Cillessen & Mayeux, 2004), Social Avoidance and Social Anxiety (Franke & Hymel, 1984) scales. Results showed that more boys than girls were in pro-bullying participant role groups; more girls than boys were in outsider groups. Boy pro-bullies were high in social rejection. Boy defenders were high in popularity and low in social avoidance. Boy outsiders had high social anxiety. Girl victims had low social status, low social acceptance and lowest perceived popularity; they were high in social avoidance and social rejection.
Social-emotional Competence of Children in Single-parent Families : Effects of Primary Caregiving by Single Parents Alone Compared with Primary Caregiving by a Non-parent

This research studied the social-emotional competence of children whose primary caregiver was a single-mother or single-father alone compared with children living with a single-parent but the primary caregiver was a non-parent (e.g. a grandparent). Subjects were 208 children (105 boys, 103 girls) from 10 elementary schools in 3 metropolitan cities. Instruments were the Adaptive Behavior Checklist constructed by the researcher, Self-esteem Inventory (Kim, 1987) and Emotional Competence Scale (Kim, 1998). Results showed that children in single-mother families were more social-emotionally competent than children in single-father families. Children whose primary caregivers were non-parents had higher self-esteem than children whose primary caregivers were single parents alone. There were interaction effects of caregiver variables on children's peer relationships and awareness/expression of their own emotion.
Relationships Among Children's Temperament, Social Competence, Emotional Intelligence, Morality, Parents' Child Rearing Attitudes and Children's Behavior Problems

The purpose of this research was to study the effects of children's temperament, social competence, emotional intelligence, morality and parent's child rearing attitudes on young children's internalizing and externalizing problem behavior. Subjects were l34 five-year-old children attending day-care centers and kindergartens in Seoul, Korea. Analysis of the relationships among these variables was by correlation and stepwise multiple regressions. There were statistically significant correlations among the variables of temperament, social competence and parents' child rearing attitudes and young children's behavior problems. Variables influencing young children's internalizing behavior problems were children's temperament and parents' child-rearing attitudes; variables influencing children's externalizing behavior problems were children's temperament, their social competence, and parents' child-rearing attitudes.
Elementary School Students' Achievement Goal Orientation, Teacher Efficacy, and Teachers' Approaches to Instruction

This study was to explore the causal relationship among teacher efficacy, teachers' approaches to instruction, and students' achievement goal orientation. Among the 278 6th grade students (average age: 12 years) who completed a self-report questionnaire during the second term, 230 (102 boys, 128 girls) returned the completed questionnaire (overall response rate : 82.7%). Measures of teacher efficacy, teachers' approaches to instruction, and students' achievement goal orientation were based on students' perceptions. Structural equation modeling tested relationships among the variables. Findings were that teacher efficacy influenced both students' achievement goal orientation and teachers' approaches to instruction. Teacher efficacy positively influenced teachers' mastery approach to instruction and students' mastery and performance approach goal orientations, whereas teacher efficacy negatively influenced teachers' performance approach to instruction.
Mother-Toddler Physical Interaction in Traditional Play

This study compared mother-toddler physical interaction by play type (traditional play, free play, block play), and child's sex and age. Subjects were 10 boys and 10 girls ranging in age from 25- to 36-months and their mothers. An observer videotaped the children and their mothers at play in their homes. Results showed that (1) mothers' physical interaction was not distinguished by play type or by child's sex or age. (2) Mothers expressed more positive emotion in traditional than in block play. (3) Younger children's play interactions were more nonverbal. (4) Children expressed more positive emotions in traditional play. This study provides groundwork for mother-toddler traditional play programs with potential for improving positive expression of emotion and attachment.
Types of Motivation for Self-Determination : Children's Self-Regulated Learning Strategies

Types of motivation for self-determination studied in the current research included intrinsic motivation (IM) to know, IM to accomplish, IM to experience stimulation; external, introjected, identified regulation; and amotivation as related to children's self-regulated learning strategies (use of cognitive strategy and self-regulation). The Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire (Pintrich & DeGroot, 1990) and the Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992, 1993) were administered to 123
graders (63 girls, 60 boys). Data were analyzed by Pearson's correlation, multiple regression, and canonical correlation analysis. Results indicated that IM to accomplish, IM to know, and identified regulation positively and amotivation negatively affected self-regulated learning strategies. IM to accomplish and IM to know positively and amotivation negatively contributed to use of cognitive strategy and self-regulation.
The Relationship of Parental Academic Achievement Pressure to Self-efficacy of Elementary Students : Mediation Effects of Achievement Goals

The present study examined the relationship between parental academic achievement pressure and self-efficacy mediated by student's achievement goal orientation among elementary school students. The 638 participants were fifth graders living in a metropolitan area. Analyses revealed that children who were high both in performance-goal and mastery-goal orientation reported highest perceived parental academic achievement pressure and self-efficacy. Performance-goal orientation played a mediation role in the relationship between parental academic achievement pressure and self-efficacy, while mastery-goal orientation did not. The limitations of the present study and suggestions for future research were discussed.
Validation of the Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale for Korean Children

Participants in this study of the validity and reliability of PIPPS (Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale; Fantuzzo et al., 1998) for Korean children were 248 5-to 6-year - old children and 11 teachers. Instruments included the Peer Rating Scale(PRS; Singleton et al., 1979), Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation (SCBE; LaFreniere & Dumas, 1995), and Preschool Behavior Questionnaire (PBQ; Behar & Stringfield, 1974). The structure of PIPPS resulted in 3 factors, 'play disruption', 'play interaction', and 'play disconnection' with 30 items similar to the original PIPPS factors. Validity was evidenced by inter-correlations among sub-factors and by correlations between PIPPS and criterion measures. PIPPS scores were validated by ratings from PRS, SCBE and PBQ sub-areas scores. Cronbach's a reliability of PIPPS factors ranged from .88 to .92.
The Components of Korean Creativity from the a Comparison Between the College Students in the US and Korea

This study aimed to develop the components of Korean creativity and to examine differences between responses of Korean and US students. Seven experts were interviewed to establish components of Korean creativity. College students in Korea (1,210) and college students in the US (514) responded to the questionnaire. Analysis was by principal component analysis, independent sample t-test, and qualitative analysis. Results were: (1) five factors of Korean creativity consisted of elaboration, redirection, novelty, understanding-the-new-by-exploring-the-old (UE), and freethinking. (2) Korean students scored higher on elaboration and UE, and American students were better at redirection, novelty, and freethinking. (3) Each of the seven interviewees identified five factors of Korean creativity, but the factors varied according to their fields of expertise.
Discriminant Analysis of Factors Influencing Preschoolers' Ability to Delay Gratification : An Experiment

Participants in this study on preschool children's ability to delay gratification were 132 4- to 5 year-old children and their mothers from 6 daycare centers. Mothers completed questionnaires reporting their parenting style, their child's ability to delay gratification, and child's temperament. Children participated in the real and hypothetical settings of the delay of gratification experiment. Data was analyzed by t-test, F-test, correlation and discrimination analysis. Results were that (1) 43% of preschoolers passed the delay of gratification experiment. (2) Older children were more able to delay gratification than younger children. (3) Children's rewards choices in the real setting correlated with their rewards choices in the hypothetical situation of delay of gratification. (4) Children's ability to delay gratification was influenced by their motor intelligence.
The Comparison of Linguistic and Psychological Characteristics in the Writing of Korean and Korean-Chinese Adolescents

This study compared the writing of Korean and Korean-Chinese adolescents using K-LIWC (Korean-Linguistic Inquiry Word Count Lee & Yoon, 2005). Three hundred ten (70 : Ulsan, Korea 90 : Yanji, and 150 : Shenyang, China) middle school students wrote a self introductory essay for unknown friends. K-LIWC yielded counts and percentages of word categories using the parts of speech of the Korean language and psychological (emotional, cognitive, sensory/perceptual, social, physical/functional and metaphysical processes) criteria. Results showed that use of pre-noun and present tense correlated with negative mood of the subjects. The writings of Korean-Chinese in Shenyang showed the most negative emotions among the three groups. This was interpreted to be a reflection of better protective factors for Korean-Chinese adolescents in Yanji compared with Shenyang.
