How to Promote the Korean Journal of Child Studies to an International Journal

Objective: It aimed at proposing the Korean Journal of Child Studies' strategy to be promoted to international journal based on the style and format of scholarly journals and journal metrics. Methods: The review of the journal in not only print version, but also an online version was done from the perspective of style and format. The total citation and impact factor were manually calculated from Web of Science Core Collection. Results: More professional level manuscript editing is required for maintaining the consistency of the style and format. The verso page and back matters should be improved to international level. Journal homepage should be reconstructed by adopting digital standards for the journal, including journal article tag suite, CrossMark, FundRef, ORCID, and text and data mining. To become an international journal, transformation into English journal and deposition to PubMed Central is mandatory. Conclusion: Since the editor's and society members' performance is top-notch, it will be possible to promote the journal up to international level soon. Society should guarantee the term of editor for enough time and support her with full cost and complete consent.
North Korean Refugee Children's Separation Experiences and Level of Attachment

Objective: Taking note of the fact that North Korean refugee children experience frequent separation from their mothers and long-term maternal deprivation during their childhood, this study examined the relationship between children's separation experiences and attachment. Methods: A total of 37 children aged from 5 to 9 were assessed on their attachment using the Separation Anxiety Test, and their mothers reported on their child's separation experiences. Results and Conclusion: The major findings of this study were as follows: first, the result of evaluating their attachment pattern showed North Korean refugee children had a high level of insecure attachment with a high tendency for avoidant attachment. This avoidant attachment tendency is probably due to growing up in a repressed emotional environment by frequently experiencing maternal separation in North Korea, China, and even after settling down in South Korea. Second, children's secure attachment level was higher if they did not experience separation from their mother, if their mother had a high level of education in South Korea, or if they lived with a big family.
The Protective Role of School Adjustment Between Risky Neighborhood Environment and Adolescent Drinking and Smoking

Objective: To prevent adolescent drinking and smoking, this study proposed a strategy based on the ecological perspective. Methods: The study applied multilevel moderated logistic regression analysis on nationally representative individual-level (2,046 9th grade adolescents) and neighborhood-level (92 geographic areas) data. Results: There was a positive association between risky neighborhood environments (e.g., rate of smoking, drinking, and presence of saloon/bars accommodation) and rates of adolescent drinking and smoking. Furthermore, the interplay between risky neighborhood environments and school adjustment pointed to a possible protective effect of a high level of school adjustment in predicting smoking and drinking among adolescents. Conclusion: Findings highlighted the importance of considering multiple neighborhood social contexts surrounding adolescents to understand their risky behavior. Furthermore, positive intervention strategies that focus on adolescents' positive development within the school domain may act to protect adolescents from harmful neighborhood environments.
Exploring the Relationship Between Daily Routines and Physical Care Environments of Daycare Centers

Objective: The purpose of the study was to explore the relationship between the daily routines and physical environments of daycare centers. Methods: A total of 20 classes at 8 different daycare centers from the metropolitan city of Daejeon were investigated. Trained observers visited each daycare center more than 3 times and collected data about daily routines using the Observational Log for Daily Routines in Daycare Centers. Also, the physical environments of each class were investigated in terms of actual size, layout of activity center, etc. Results and Conclusion: Results of the study were: first, daily routines of daycare centers could be divided into 2 distinguishable types by cluster analysis- 'free play oriented' and 'group activity oriented' Second, the amount of space each child has in a classroom differed according to the total size of the classroom. An average of 7 activity centers existed in each classroom. Third, there was a difference between free play oriented and group activity oriented groups in terms of the classroom size allocated for each child and the organization of the activity centers.
The Effects of Parental Support, Control and School Life Adjustment on Suicidal Ideation of Adolescents: Mediating Effects of Depression

Objective: The purpose of this study was to confirm if there are gender differences in influences of parental support, control, and school life adjustment on suicidal ideation of adolescents and to examine the mediating effect of depression on the influences of independent variables on their suicidal ideation. Methods: This study comprised a total of 671 students in seventh and eighth grades in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. The data were analyzed for frequency, average, and standard deviation, using the t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis, stepwise regression analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and the Sobel test. Results and Conclusion: First, significant differences among adolescents' gender were shown in fathers' psychological control, mothers' behavior control, and suicidal ideation. Second, in the case of male adolescents, all independent variables were found to have a full mediating effect on their suicidal ideation. Meanwhile, in the case of female adolescents, independent variables except for mothers' psychological control were found to have a full mediating effect on their suicidal ideation. Mothers' psychological control was found to have a partial mediating effect on suicidal ideation of adolescents for both genders.
Stability in Friendship Patterns Among Kindergarteners: A Short-Term Longitudinal Study

Objective: This two-wave study examined stability in kindergarteners' friendship patterns over 5 months. Methods: Participants were 501 five-year-old children (262 girls and 239 boys) attending kindergartens in Seoul, Incheon, and Kyounggi provinces in Korea. Each child nominated three individuals as his/her friends in July, and again in December of 2013. Depending on the presence/absence of friendships and the mutuality of identifying friends, the children's friendship patterns were categorized into five groups: stable, fluid, loss, gain, and friendless. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, and chi-square tests. Results: Results revealed stability, as well as changes in friendship patterns, among kindergarteners over the 5-month period. The stable friendships, those that maintained the same friend(s) in both waves, was 43.7%, the fluid friendships, those that changed friends over the 5 month period was 18%, the gain friendships, those who had newly developed friends in wave 2 was 17%, and the loss friendships, those who had friends at wave 1 but lost friends at wave 2, was 9.8%. The friendless, those that had no friends in both waves, was 11.5%. Conclusion: Results showed that kindergarteners were capable of maintaining and making new friends over a 5-month period.
Family Cohesion and Happiness of Youth: Mediating Effects of a Positive Attitude

Objective: This study investigated how family cohesion influences adolescents' positive attitude formation and their happiness as classified into hedonistic happiness and eudaimonistic happiness. We also examined whether adolescents' positive attitude functions as a mediator between family cohesion and the two kinds of happiness. Particularly, positive attitude consists of three subfactors: positive perspective, self-positivity, and social positivity. This study focused on exploring which subfactor primarily plays a mediating role. Methods: A total of 320 middle school students participated in the present study. Results and Conclusion: The findings of the study are as follows: first, positive attitude was shown to function as a mediator between family cohesion and two kinds of happiness. Second, through an analysis of multiple mediation, self-positivity and social positivity were found to be mediators between family cohesion and hedonistic happiness. However, positive perspective and self-positivity were revealed to serve as mediators between family cohesion and eudaimonistic happiness. Only self-positivity, being considered as a core construct of positive attitude, turned out to be a common mediator between family cohesion and the two kinds of happiness.
The Influence of Parental Attachment on School Life Adjustment in Early Adolescence: The Mediating Effect of Internet Use Type

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effect of internet use type on the relationship between parental attachment and school life adjustment. Methods: For this study, data were drawn from 4th wave panel data of Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey. 1,537 1st graders of middle school were used for analysis. Results: The results of this study were summarized as follows. First, adolescents' parental attachment positively influenced school life adjustment. Second, study oriented internet use positively influenced school life adjustment. However, entertainment oriented internet use negatively influenced school life adjustment, and relation oriented internet use did not influence school life adjustment. Third, study and entertainment oriented internet use mediated parental attachment and school life adjustment. However, relation oriented internet use did not mediate parental attachment and school life adjustment. Conclusion: The discovery that study oriented internet is a factor that can improve school life adjustment carries a significant meaning. Based on the results, some implications are discussed to improve school life adjustment in early adolescence.
