Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 139~145
The purpose of this study is to obtain low-emission and high-efficiency in LPG engine with hydrogen enrichment. The objective of this paper is to clarify the effects of hydrogen enrichment in LPG fuelled engine on exhaust emission, thermal efficiency and performance. The compression ratio of 8 was selected to avoid abnormal combustion. To maintain equal heating value of fuel blend, the amount of LPG was decreased as hydrogen was gradually added. The relative air-fuel ratio was increased from 0.8 to 1.3, and the ignition timing was controlled to be at MBT (minimum spark advance for best torque)

Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 146~153
A performance test of the stainless steel based sintered metal filter was conducted on the low and intermediate level radioactive waste (LILW) vitrification process. The applicability of the metal filter was based on the test results as well. The baseline pressure drop of the metal filter was evaluated similar to the ceramic filter. During the test, when the flow rate of off-gas was
, the total baseline pressure drop was shown as
. The total pressure drop was attributed to the filter media and the residual dust layer and the value of each was
respectively. The SEM-EDS spectrum and micrograph of the metal filter specimen showed, no corrosion and no physical damage both at the skin membrane and at the support layer. And most of the baseline pressure drop was caused by the deposition of dust on the surface of the membrane. In conclusion, even though the filter exposure time was short at the test, the performance of the stainless steel based metal filter was acceptable for the treatment of LILW vitrification process.

Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 154~159
An experimental study has been performed to investigate the correlation on compressor discharge temperature of capacity modulated system A/C in cooling mode. Indoor and outdoor temperatures, the cooling capacity, compressor discharge temperature and loading time are measured by the psychrometric calorimeter. The system is controlled by applying the scroll compressor operated by PWM valve and loading duty. With decreasing outdoor temperature, the cooling capacity increases. But, with decreasing indoor temperature, it decreases. According to the increase in outdoor temperature and loading duty, compressor discharge temperature increases. From these experimental data, the correlation on compressor discharge temperature is proposed. The correlation obtained from the present study is agreed with the experimental data within

Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 160~165
Ground source heat pump (GSHP) or geothermal heat pump systems (GHPs) are recognized to be outstanding heating and cooling systems. Most of GSHP systems installed and studied in korea are vertical GSHP systems. A horizontal GSHP system was installed in greenhouse and investigated for the performance characteristics. The results of the study showed that the heating coefficient of performance of the heat pump was 3.64 and the overall heating coefficient of performance of the system was 3.31. The pumping power was obtained as 28.0 W/kW and the required ground heat exchanger length was 53.3 m/kW of rejection heat of condenser. The heat extraction rate was, on average, 14.58 W/m of ground heat exchanger length and trench length is 27.7 m/kW of rejection heat of condenser.

Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 166~173
R134a is considered as an alternative refrigerant to R22 for air conditioners. An experimental investigation was made to study the characteristics of the heat transfer and pressure drop for R134a flowing in a fin-and-tube heat exchanger used for commercial air-conditioning units. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant temperature of
and refrigerant mass fluxes of
. The inlet air has dry bulb temperature or
, relative humidity of 40% and air velocity varying from 0.68 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments show that air velocity decreased by 5.9% is needed for R134a than that of R22 while pressure drop for R134a was
higher than that of R22 for the degree of subcooling
. The results are useful in designing more compact and effective condensers for various refrigeration and air conditioning systems using refrigerant R134a.

Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 174~180
The trend and outlook of energy supply and demand have an crucial effect on not only energy sector but also korean economy due to the rapid change of energy environments with continuous high oil price such as dubai crude oil price of above $60 a barrel. Specifically, korea is the 9th largest energy consuming nation in the world and the 97 percentages of energy import totally depends on the import of energy resources in korea. Korean economy is influenced directly by the trend and outlook of world energy on account of that. Moreover, Should korea be the annex 1 country having responsibility for reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2000, in 2013, The effectuation of united nations framework convention on climate change will affect korean economy severely. In this study, we analyze the supply and demand of primary energy resources such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas. we then suggest the optimal alternatives of energy technology development that play an important part, which will be a temporary bridge, in going forward with hydrogen economy in the aspects of energy policy.

Journal of Energy Engineering, volume 15, issue 3, 2006, Pages 202~208
Although the importance of good conservation of historic sites including ancient royal tombs is well aware, still not much attention has been paid for the facilities and systems to preserve those historic sites, which includes precious artifacts as wall paints and carved works, etc. Even the general understanding about the environment of the underground space or tombs is not satisfactory. In the present study, vibration levels due to the operation of an HVAC system to maintain the desired indoor temperature and humidity are investigated experimentally. According to the measured data, the level of vibration inside the present model tomb with the indoor unit inside, showed order of magnitude less values than the Swiss Standards, but still higher than the value suggested by German standards, which is, zero. Further study will be pursued for cases including different ways of installation, because the vibration level depends not only on the system design, but also on the installation methods.
