DOI : 10.15207/JKCS.2016.7.2.043
The purpose of this study was to suggest the effective squat exercise position to strengthening vastus medialis oblique, and vastus lateralis in quadriceps. Subjects were twenty patients with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) volunteered to participate in this study. All subjects were applied to static squat convergence exercise with knee flexed
for 30 seconds total 5 times. Measurement variables were maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) of the quadriceps, Q angle and length of thigh. Those were measured before and after the squat exercise on knee joint angle, change rate of which were used for statistical analysis. As a result, squat exercise with knee flexed
increase significantly among knee joint angle in the MVIC change rates of quadriceps (p<.05), however the rates of Q-angle and length change of thigh showed no significant difference. Therefore, this findings suggest that squat exercise with knee flexed
strengthen quadriceps effectively in patients with PFPS.

DOI : 10.15207/JKCS.2016.7.2.053
Epilepsy is a neurological disease characterized by recurrent seizures. Though the exact causes for epilepsy are unknown, genetic mutations, especially altered gene functions, have been implicated as key causative components of epilepsy. We recently identified a causing gene for the Miles-Carpenter syndrome (MCS). MCS patients have intellectual disability and epilepsy. MCS knockout (KO) zebrafish also show a seizure-like phenotype with hyperactivity of pectoral fin and jaw movement, resulting from loss of GABAergic interneurons. To evaluate MCS KO zebrafish as an epilepsy model, we tested the effects of retigabine, an anticonvulsant drug, on the movement of MCS KO zebrafish.

DOI : 10.15207/JKCS.2016.7.2.061
The olfactory system is an important model for the study of neuronal degeneration and regeneration, including neuronal diseases. When the olfactory sensory neurons are damaged by nerve injury or are exposed to environmental factors, they degenerate and are replaced by regenerating neurons. To monitor neuronal degeneration in living animal, we established an olfactory-specific GFP transgenic zebrafish. The effects of Triton X-100 or sodium acetate on the olfactory system were examined. A significant decrease in the number of GFP-positive olfactory sensory neurons was observed after chemical lesion. We found a recovery of GFP-positive neurons by 2 days posttreatment. From these results, we expect that further studies of olfactory degeneration and regeneration using this transgenic zebrafish will provide important advances for the study of neuronal degeneration and regeneration.
