Research and development studies in internal combustion engines are set on a turning point due to requirements mostly purify the polluted environments. Naturally, basic studies concerned about engines are objected to elucidate formation mechanism of harmful matters, such as nitric oxide
and particulate matters. And for diesel engines, phenomenon in combustion chambers are analyzed in several approach ways in order to obtain detail understandings in closed and hardly observing space. In this article. it is discussed that the formation mechanism of diesel fuel sprays, mostly non-evaporating free diesel sprays. From that it would be promoted some new innovations in internal combustion engines of next generation.

The Behavior Characteristics of Diesel Impinging Spray on the Room Temperature Impinging Disk

This study addresses the behavior characteristics of diesel spray injected on the impinging disk with the room temperature. The models of impinging spray are the stick, the reflect and the wall jet model In the initiative of the fuel injection the impinging spray was the reflect model. because the momentum of droplets was very large. This model developed to the wall jet model according to the time approaches. On the low temperature disk the fuel film was made by the attachment of the droplets with low Weber number. The thickness of impinging spray was increased when the disk approached to the nozzle tip. Mathematical analysis for calculation with the behavior of impinging spray have to consider the reflecting effect and the influence of the fuel film.
A Study on the Fuel Spray and Atomization Characteristics of MPI Gasoline Injector

Fuel spray in the MPI gasoline injector and its atomization characteristics are investigated with both macroscopic and microscopic visualization systems. The Bosch injector is inserted into an air-assist spray adapter which is designed to be fabricated and assembled easily. particle motion analysis system is used to measure the SMD of injector, where the assistant air pressure is varied from 0.0 to 1.5bar with fuel pressure 2.8bar. Droplet size decreased with higher air pressure and fine fuel spray with below
of SMD is acquired at the assistant air pressure over 0.5bar.
Analysis of Spray Characteristics in w-shaped Diesel Engine Combustion Chamber with Impingement Lands

This Paper addresses to spray characteristics in w-shaped diesel engine combustion chamber which has impingement parts for 4 sprays injected from an injector. The two-dimensional shapes have been chosen to avoid the difficulties for analysing the spray dynamics in the real chamber. The simple shapes are reproduced with same geometries in vertical or horizontal sections through the impingement lands. The spray developments are visualized with a high speed drum camera and shadowgraphy optical system, and the droplet sizes are measured by Malvern system. The detailed discussions m made for the two different combustion chamber shapes, which are new w-shape using spray wall impaction and general w-shape. The results show that the spray characteristics of the new shape are superior to those of the general w-shape.
A Study on the Flow Characteristics in Double Coaxial Pipe Jets

The present study is aiming at improving the performance of main nozzle of an air jet loom with a modified reed and auxiliary nozzles. The double coaxial pipe jets consisting of a central air jet and an annular air jet have been experimentally investigated. The duter jet has a potential core and a constant velocity. The inner jet through an inner long pipe is induced by the subatmospheric pressure near the inner nozzle edge, and the jet velocity of an inner pipe is always lower than that of a outer pipe. The static pressures of the main nozzle over a wide range of the nozzle tank pressure were measured, and the nozzle velocity and Mach numbers were analytically calculated. Experiment81 results indicate that the critical condition of Mach number of unity to occur at the two positions in a main nozzle; one of them is the needle tip and the other is the acceleration tube exit An increase in the tank pressure causes the critical throat condition to occur at the two positions above. The velocity of acceleration-tube exit is maximum at the critical length L* and flow patter in acceleration-tube over critical lengh remains unstable.
Effect of Reentrant Type Bowl Geometry on Combustion Characteristics in Diesel Engine -Effect of Aspect Ratio(Bowl Diameter/Bowl Depth)-

Effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.1.diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter/Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the measured data include the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber. Experimental results indicate that the effect of dc/H and nozzle protrusion are relatively small and there exists an optimum dc/H according to the combustion conditions. It is also found that the smoke emission is quite sensitive the overall combustion time where the 90 percentage of the combustion heat is released. The smoke mission increases by shortening the 90% combustion time while it decreases by delaying the 90% combustion time.
