A Study on Effect of the Intake Valve Timing and Injection Conditions on the PCCI Engine Performance

As world attention has focused on global warming and air pollution, high efficiency diesel engines with low
emissions have become more attractive. Premixed diesel engines in particular have the potential to achieve the more homogeneous mixture in the cylinder which results in lower NOx and soot emission. Early studies have shown that the operation conditions such as the EGR, intake conditions, injection conditions and compression ratio are important to reduce emissions in a PCCI (Premixed Charge Compression Ignition) engine. In this study a modified cam was employed to reduce the effective compression ratio. While opening timing of the intake valve was fixed, closing timing of the intake valve was retarded
. Although Atkinson cycle with the retarded cam leads to a low in-cylinder pressure in the compression stroke, the engine work can still be increased by advanced injection timing. On that account, we investigated the effects of various injection parameters to reduce emission and fuel consumption; as a result, lower NOx emission levels and almost same levels of fuel consumption and PM compared with those of conventional diesel engine cam timing could be achieved with the LIVC system.
A Numerical Analysis on the Spray Characteristics at Different Injection System Parameters in a Common-rail Diesel Engine

This paper present the diesel spray characteristics at different injection system parameters in a HSDI diesel engine. The spray characteristics was calculated by the coupled simulation of fuel injection system model and three-dimensional KIVA-3V code with TAB spray model. The relevant injection parameters are accumulator volume, control chamber initial volume, control orifice diameter, needle valve diameter and nozzle chamber initial volume, etc. Parametric investigation with respect to twelve relevant injection parameters showed that there was a significant advantage in varying control chamber initial volume, control chamber orifice diameter, and nozzle chamber orifice diameter with respect to effect the SMD and fuel injection speed. Consequently, in order to design the fuel injection system for spray characteristics, it seems reasonable to suppose to be optimized the fuel injection system.
An Experimental Investigation on Spray Behavior of Biodiesel and DME on Blended Ratio in High Temperature and Pressure Ambient Conditions

The objective of this work is to analyze the macroscopic behavior of spray and injection characteristics on the DME blended biodiesel at different mixing ratios by using spray visualization and injection rate measurement system. The spray images were analyzed to a spray tip penetration, a spray cone angle and a spray area distribution at various mixing ratio of DME by weight. The influence of different injection pressure and ambient pressure on the fuel spray characteristics are investigated for the various injection parameters. In order to analyze the injection characteristics of test fuels, the fuel injection rate is measured at various blending ratio. The variation of viscosity of the blended fuel by the mixing of DME fuel shows the improved effect of spray developments. Also, it was found that the injection quantities of high blended ratio were larger than that of lower blended fuel. Also, higher blending fuel showed a faster evaporation than that of mixing ratio of test fuel because kinetic viscosity was changed by blending ratio.
Comparison of Pilot Spray Characteristics of HP Diesel Injectors with Different Driving Method for CRDi System (I)

The capability of pilot injection with small fuel quantity at all engine operating conditions is one of the main feature of the common rail direct injection system. The purpose of the pilot injection is to lower the engine noise and to reduce the NOx emissions. This study describes the pilot spray structure characteristics of the common-rail diesel injectors with different electric driving characteristics, including solenoid-driven and piezo-driven type. Namely three common-rail injectors with different electric current wave were investigated in this study. The pilot spray characteristics such as spray speed, spray tip penetration, and spray angle were obtained by spray images, which is measured by the back diffusion light illumination method with optical system for high-speed temporal photography. As this research results, it was found that pilot injection of common-rail system was effected by rate of injection with different electrical characteristic for driving the injector.
A Study on the Spray, Combustion, and Exhaust Emission Characteristics of Dimethyl-ether (DME) by Experiment and Numerical Analysis

The aim of this work is to investigate the spray and combustion characteristics of dimethyl-ether (DME) at various injection conditions. The spray characteristics such as spray tip penetration and spray cone angle were experimentally studied from the spray images which obtained from the spray visualization system. Combustion and emissions characteristics were numerically investigated by using KIVA-3V code coupled with Chemkin chemistry solver. From these results, it revealed that DME spray had a shorter spray tip penetration and wider spray cone angle than that of diesel spray due to the low density, low surface tension, and fast evaporation characteristics. At the constant heating value condition, DME fuel showed higher peak combustion pressure and earlier ignition timing, because of high cetane number and superior evaporation characteristics. In addition, the combustion of DME exhausted more
emission and lower HC emission due to the active combustion reaction in the combustion chamber. The result shows that DME had a little soot emission due to its molecular structure characteristics with no direct connection between carbons.
Prediction of Fuel Properties on LPLi System with an External Fuel Pump

The LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) fuel attracts attention as a clean alternative fuel. In order to further reduce the exhaust emission and improve performance in LPG engines, the LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG Injection) system is used. In LPLi system, the fuel pump performance is important for keeping the LPG over it's saturated vapor pressure. An external fuel pump is needed to improve the durability for LPG engines. This paper predicted the variation of fuel properties on the LPLi system with an external fuel pump. From each component's thermodynamic model, an 1-D simulation is developed for LPLi system with an external fuel pump. Then the 1-D simulation data analyzed and compared with the rig-test. The 1-D simulation and the rig-test produced similar results.
